I posted something from the talented and beautiful Amanda Zelina (aka The Coppertone) not too long ago, but damn it, I want everyone to love blues as much as I do. So check it, here's a video of Amanda and another MTIB vet, Dallas Green (aka City and Colour), doing a wonderful version of "When I Lay My Burden Down". It's an American spiritual song that has been adapted many times over the years, but in this case I believe they are covering Mississippi Fred McDowell's amazing version. Utterly fantastic. The raw emotion of blues music is what draws me [...]
You guys like The Black Keys right? I thought so. Well imagine this... What if Adele was belting out the lyrics over your favorite rockin' Dan Auerbach guitar riff? Sounds super awesome right? OK, now stop imagining and play the song below. The Coppertone is Amanda Zelina, and holy crap does she rock my face off. This is the most hard-hitting, unabashedly bluesy sound I've heard since stumbling
The Coppertone is a reinvention of young Canadian singer-songwriter, Amanda Zelina; a kind of back to roots trip along a road to Damascus of the Blues. The name shelters the aspirations of the artist to feel the raw emotion and experience of blues music. Her new direction now has a voice in the form of a new record, Hidden Dreams . This is quite a departure from the singer's earlier album, Love Me Till I'm Me Again, which was in itself a very accomplished offering yet softer, much more polished and possibly a bit less individual [...]

Hidden Dreams mp3 The Coppertone Hidden Dreams .... pre-order it! Nighttime Wishes mp3 Amanda Zelina can't hide from me for long. I got this email from her a few days ago, downloaded her album and then promptly forgot about it. Today I plugged it into my speakers and had no clue who it came from (untagged, grrr!) Had no clue, that is, until the vocals began.... there is simply no mistaking this voice for anyone else once you've studied it as I have. Yes, the style [...]
Wood & Wires has been doing some pretty cool things with video cameras and musicians. They've been meeting up with indie artists in their natural environment and filming short, intimate performances. The results are great, and word on my GChat says they've got Neon Indian coming up soon. On Friday i met Amanda Zelina at her jam space, to do a piece on her new project The Coppertone. Finally people will get to see Amanda's bluesy side, as she plays The Black Keys and The White Stripes inspired tunes. Here is a quick video for her song [...]
With more hassles trying to get into shows with a wristband on Saturday, I decided to take that as a sign that my 2010 CMF concept of sticking to one venue a night was a good one. Side benefits have included not being exhausted and generally being able to sit down for the shows (which thinking about it may go hand in hand). So my Saturday was back to The Central. Among the wafting tantalizing
Toronto's own Amanda Zelina plays rock that ranges from introspective to robust. If you can't get enough Kate Nash or Regina Spektor you should give her a shot. Zelina will be showcasing her blues rock duo The Coppertone, which is more geared towards fans of bands like The White Stripes and The Black Keys (I guess it should really be The Copper Tones to keep the nomenclature consistent). She's

So this is Day 5 of "Best of 20093 Blogger crew (see what I did there with that picture above this post) and today we have TartyTart from over at Love Shack, Baby out of the windy city. If anyone knows tart, then they know this is the post for (and from) her. It is all in good fun and she is more than a good sport with all us "guy bloggers" in making it her sole purpose to make us blush, and she has done just that on more than one occasion. And [...]

Well darlings, I first heard from the lovely Amanda Zelina back in March when she released her single "Obsessed" off her debut album Love Me Till I'm Me Again. I was taken with it. It's a gorgeous tune and her voice is sweet and clear. The whole album came my way soon thereafter and it did not disappoint. Eight tracks that give you a taste for more of Amanda's siren-like calls. I'm telling you, if she comes anywhere near Chicago, I'll be at her show. I might just get in my car and go to more [...]

Maybe it's because I grew up reading too much Hemmingway , watching too many Steve McQueen and John Wayne flicks with my dad, and listening to too many Rolling Stones records, but I seem to have been born with, or developed, a predisposition against female artists. Aside from a select few ( Lucinda Williams , Aimee Mann , Patti Smith , Jesse Sykes , Victoria Williams , Cat Power , Aretha , etc.), it all sounds pretty much the same to me. Before I go on, I [...]

Oops – looks like it's been a couple of weeks since I purged the mailbox. There was a lot of stuff in there, but probably half of it was either random PR things or music you probably don't want to hear. From the surviving half I managed to pull several decent items. Of particular note is Spider Problem, a rock band out of El Lay. They are without a doubt my pick of this post, with a sound that kinda sorta reminds me of X. Another interesting band is The Bad Dogs. The Bad Dogs [...]

~ Anders Parker - "Calling Out To You" ~ A sweet song, with a simple but effective chorus. I like the layers of instruments and the female background vocals. Pretty! From Parker's upcoming double concept album Skyscraper Crow which seems very promising from what I've heard so far. ~ Southside Stalkers - "Robert Downey Jr." ~ Another fun, upbeat tune by Sweden's Southside Stalkers. I'm guessing the lyrics are supposed to be from Robert Downey Jr's point of view, or his name is a metaphor for [...]
What's TWITSTOCK! without a few @newacts for you to #follow? Earlier in the week we chatted with Amanda Zelina and Chase from Cavalier Rose and their missives follow... "What can I say about mom and pop record stores? That's a loaded question... filled with memories I can taste, scents that still lay on the tip on my nose and sounds that will be forever en-grained in me. My first trip to a record store came [...]
