As we noted late last week in The Year's Best Coverfolk, Vol. 1: Tribute Albums and Cover Compilations , it’s been a reasonably good year for full-album coverage. But although tracks from tributes continue to overwhelm singletons in my collection, as in previous years, a significant majority of the songs that lingered came from a mixed bag of borderline genre albums and single shot coverfolk releases, via the usual sources: YouTube and Soundcloud, in-studio sessions, website and bandcamp singles, full folk albums, and more. That we continue to find so much of our favorite coverage of [...]
Alex Wong has had his creative hands in the works of many musical endeavors over the last decade. He's been producing, mixing, arranging, recording, engineering, & even singing in over a dozen albums & soundtracks. I'm a big fan of The Paper Raincoat, a charming folk dream-pop musical experience, and the brainchild of Alex & [...]

It's been a solid year for full-album coverage from single artists. Kris Delmhorst's summery Cars tribute and Thea Gilmore's transformative Dylan tribute alone held the line for excellence in the singer-songwriter categories. Eef Barzelay's Journey project , which transformed my childhood poprock into poignant, soulful solo pieces, turned out to be a great success; so did Ralph McTell's Dylan EP , duo Thomas Fox' tradfolk release , Sara Lov's full-album cover set , and Reid Jamieson's birthday tribute to his wife through the songs of 1969 , [...]

The blogs are buzzing with yesterday's announcement, via a terse yet sincere statement on their website , that Athens, GA hometown heroes R.E.M. are calling it quits after three decades on the road, the radio, and the cultural consciousness. We first covered the genre-defining band back in 2009, so rather than rehash their path from college radio to iconic mainstream success, we're taking the opportunity to revisit that older post today in memoriam - with a couple of bonus covers of Losing My Religion , from more recent CLD faves Amber Rubarth [...]

I'm a bit afraid for Amber Rubarth . I'm afraid of what the industry will do to her. The problem is she's good, really good. Her songs are great (as evidence of her win at Mountain Stage NewSong competition) and the music is high quality (she can play guitar and has access to top studio players). The problem is she's also beautiful (and marketable) and I'm worried they will try to make her into a folkier version of Norah Jones. Instead she should have a long prolific, creative career like Joan Baez, [...]

I've been busy enough to miss a deadline here, with the start of a new school year taking up all my time and energy. But happily, a luxuriously long Labor Day weekend leaves room for a mid-morning run-down of the newest stuff to hit my ears. Here's the best previously-unheard artist coverage that's been making me happy as Summer spins to Fall; take a taste between the barbecues and parties, and - as always - don't forget to follow links to purchase and support these new and still-rising artists if you like what you [...]

love drunk I wish we'd gotten drunk, And fallen down confused.. I wish we'd gotten drunk, So the kiss had an excuse.. The wine was left unopened, And the whiskey untouched too.. And now I'm wide awake and wonderin' What am I to do? I wish we'd gotten hammered, And passed out in the dark.. And I wish I slurred my words [...]
Maryland Public Television (PBS) often dedicates a big chunk of its Saturday Night lineup on its "MPT 2" channel to music performance. Tonight, June 4th is no exception. Beginning at 11pm, they kickoff the entertainment with "Live from the Artists Den" with Jakob Dylan performing in the Refectory of the Desmond Tutu Center in NY.At Midnight, MPT 2 turns to Memphis, running a series of "Sun

Zwar ohne ...
AMBER RUBARTH(Indie/Folk)As my associate Chuck alluded to in a prior post, one of the best perks of this gig (besides mountains of cash rolling in on the reg..) is getting heads up from friends on band. Although some people might think it would be annoying to get recommendations for MTIB, but really, it's pretty far from the truth. This artist is named Amber Rubarth and I really dig her. A little

I know many bands donating money from album sales directly to Japan relief efforts. I just want to share them with you and make sure to thank the artist/band for being so generous, it's a wonderful thing they are doing to help those in need. Do your part too, which should be easy with such good music involved. I'm sure there are many more bands doing this so leave comments for more suggestions. I'll try and keep the list ongoing and will share new updates on twitter and facebook. [...]
This was fun. Even before the 'Pie and Tart' home studio was built out and put together, our good friends from Propellerhead suggested the kind of 2-day bash we can really dig: freeform recording with friends who are top singer-songwriters and players. The equation, which produced good times and two awesome new songs (listen and [...]
I'm sitting here doing nothing any more productive than listening to a podcasted edition of the Ray Foley Show from a week and a half ago, so I may as well occupy my weary fingers with this thing: writing about one of my favourite singers. Relevantly, that singer is the charming chirpy chanteuse Amber Rubarth, and she's just released a cover of R.E.M's "Losing My Religion". It's rather spiffing. Recorded for Filter Magazine's "DREAM ART EXPLOSION" (which sounds like a pretentious teen's way of explaining stained bedsheets (allegedly)) it's a wonderfully minimal little thing. Rubarth pares [...]
Today, us east coast kids are hunkered down, waiting for that hurricane that probably won't hit us at all but which provides a good excuse to take the day off! Of course, we at Consequence of Sound don't even know what this day off thingy means and will probably work through the 2012 apocalypse. But you should enjoy a day off, just for the sake of having more time to read all our great content AND listen to all the awesome music included on this week's Friday Mixtape. Once again, it's jam packed and thanks to the recent [...]
The song holds up beautifully even without the mandolin riff.
NYC PBS affiliate WNET presents another great music lineup Friday night with Live from the Artists' Den with Ringo Starr and Ben Harper at 9:30pm. The music keeps rolling at 10:30 with Sun Studio Sessions, with Amber Rubarth joined by special guests Adam Levy (Norah Jones Band) and Alex Wong (Vienna Teng). Sun Studio Sessions premiered on WNET in the 10:30pm time slot this past Friday night and

A matter of weeks ago, I took a short trip to London, during which I was serendipitous enough to catch an Amber Rubarth gig. Although that may be less down to serendipity, and more to the fact that I flew over specifically for it. She was also gracious enough to allow me to pester her with questions and bad jokes for half an hour or so. Now, following some internal complications and day-job-related lethargy and skull-imploding fury, I’m presenting a series of articles based on that pleasant Thursday evening. Part two: the gig. [...]

Bleurgh. Apologies for that. But! There is good news to share. And here it is: perennial ZME favourite , talented indie songstress and rather lovely person to boot, Amber Rubarth had a hand in scoring the new Joan Rivers biopic, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work , which opens in US theatres on Friday. Of course, in some ways, this isn't good news. One way it's bad is because I'll never see this film, a result of me finding Joan Rivers about as funny as a dead, skinned kitten [...]
