oy vey! i need an intern, or we need an intern. someone like darren from seinfeld. this here site should be up and operational, much like the death star, within the next few days. everything is being re-uploaded, all 27,000 files of it and as you can imagine it's taking a while. so here are some of my favorites from the past few days.
Raleigh, North Carolina's American Aquarium, led by lead-singer-songwriter B.J. Barham have done their best to wear-out the roads of the entire country, but especially the south, since they become... American Aquarium lead singer P.J. Barham looks like the booze-bombed spawn of Tim Matheson and Ryan Adams, but luckily for us he evokes the gritty, lovable loser side of Ryan Adams that we fell in love with in early Whiskeytown. The protagonist in "Savannah Almost Killed Me" falls for a girl who was "A Bette Davis double / With diamonds on her knuckles / She knew every word to "Born to Run"". My kind of girl. My kind of guy. American Aquarium - "Savannah Almost Killed Me" (from Burn.Flicker.Die [...]

photo by me hey! as you may know american aquarium's 2012 release, burn.flicker.die , was my favorite record from last year. its a brilliant and moving piece or work. if you've ever lived probably in ways you shouldnt, made some shitty decisions, or just were filled with doubt and anxiety burn.flicker.die will speak to you on so many levels, at least it did to me. its a once every 5 years kind of record, imo. there is one of my favorite songs from said record and here they are at [...]

The rules are that every last podcast of the year (this show was created in December) is always a recap show. Some rules are breakable, others, such as the last podcast of the year, are not. Thusly, this show is some of my favorite songs of the year as they fit into the overall mix. Which is a form of saying, this isn’t a countdown or a list. I pulled a shit fuck of songs and set out making this podcast paying much attention to the overall flow of things. That said, every album that found a song on this [...]

16. Cory Branan – Mutt It seems like every review of Mutt talks about there being this style, then this style, then another, and what they never say is that every song on Mutt is incredibly well written. Every song on Mutt is incredibly well written, I said it twice to make up for other’s neglect. Badman 15. The Sparklers – Crying At The Low Bar The review of this album generated a good bit of positive feedback. I was surprised people liked it [...]

Most years, this is a much greater presentation from myself and I’m sorry that this year isn’t the same. It’s been a shit year and that fact combined with the depression that comes with it has sapped my entire motivation to sit down and do all the HTML formatting to make this list as beautiful as (i feel) it normally is. Presentation aside. I stand by this list wholly. I may not have been able to muster the ambition to format it like years past (I am taking pills that are intended to get me back there) but [...]

There were so many good albums this year that I couldn't make the decision to rank them, and I know that's not the most important decision anyway, so this year's best-of list is in groups with no internal order. This is the art I spent my cherished/wasted time consuming this year. Hope everybody's upcoming year is full of growth. Albums, Best of the Best: Franz Nicolay - Do the Struggle - tentative cynic-folk, sincere show-rock ( 9B review ) [...]

American Aquarium - Burn.Flicker.Die. We'll get around to posting our individual best of lists in the coming week or so but last week we all conversed over email and it quickly became evident that American Aquarium's brand new album, Burn.Flicker.Die , was gonna win the vote for album of the year and it's largely agreed that the title track is the best song of the year. So do yourself a favor and pick up Burn, Flicker, Die on vinyl and CD from Lone Star Music and Last Chance [...]

My dad built a guitar. Shortly after finishing it he got really sick. Now, I try and get people to play the guitar. You can read the whole story here .y Back in November BJ Barham of American Aquarium was kind enough to sit down play a song on my Dad's guitar. You're gonna love it as much as me, trust me. well, here we are. 2012 almost over, my 7th year of running this joint has passed, and this is what i have come up with. most of this will not be a surprise to anyone who follows this place with any regularity. this year was increasingly hard, i must admit. i think every record in my top ten has the potential of landing that coveted #1 spot cause they're all amazing records in my very very humble opinion, but at the end of the day there can only be one, much like the highlander. my number one record this year [...]

Woot! It was nice to get back to the podcast. Mad props to Charles for keeping it active and awesome the past two months. So awesome, in fact, we’re gonna start alternating months so you’ll hear him again in November. Like I was saying though, I am naturally a night person so I find actual enjoyment in staying up till 3:00 in the morning making these on Friday nights and after 2 months off, I had plenty of music to pick from. I tried to keep the podcast from being a facsimile of the radio show and I [...]
The title track off of Raleigh, NC based American Aquarium's latest album Burn. Flicker. Die. sums the album up nicely: “We burn too long then flicker and die.” The songs feature tales of hard times, bad decisions, disappointments, small town living and life on the road all set to gruff vocals, bluesy guitars, hard core pedal steel and dynamic keys. The album was produced by Jason Isbell, mixed by Chris Stamey and features guest spots from Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown) and Spooner Oldham. Standouts tracks include “Jacksonville”, “Savannah Almost Killed Me”, “Lonely Ain’t Easy” and finally “Saturday [...]

my favorite record of the year's release party? fucking awesome. that record of course is american aquariums's burn.flicker.die and was lovingly recorded bryonsos. it is available via archive.org in flac, ogg and of course mp3. you can download the entire mp3 format by clicking here or if you want flac, clicky here . again, much love to bryonsos and american aquarium for letting this be shared cause its pretty fucking epic, and i really hate using that word, epic that is, not fucking. also wanted to make mention that i/we [...]

It's reasonable for a person who has listened to music, critically or just actively, for the better part of a person's life to have a conflicted relationship with "road songs." On one hand, it's physically impossible to hear Willie's "On the Road Again" too many times. On the other, Road Song is a frustrating phenomena that infects many a touring band so that they can only write about touring. It's frustrating because 1) the listener likely isn't a rock star, didn't have the guts to even try, so stop rubbing it in and 2) yeah, any idiot can see it's [...]

Tonight on the Local Beat we are back to another jam packed program with several local bands releasing new albums. On Tuesday Durham band I Was Totally Destroying It released their sixth album, Vexations . The album has been streaming here all week in anticipation for their release party tomorrow evening at Motorco Music Hall in Durham and I must admit, I am quite smitten. We will be chatting with the members at 5pm today and while the group has been [...]

American Aquariums Burn. Flicker. Die. is so far my favourite for Album Of The Year. It's the album all other albums of 2012 needs to measure up to. It's the album that (if there's any justice left at all in the world) will take American Aquarium to the big league, getting them the biggest and best paid gigs out there. I'm totally in love with this album, and I've played it over and over since I got my hands on it. My wife has even started to warm to it. My collegues whom I car-pool with [...]
