The rules are that every last podcast of the year (this show was created in December) is always a recap show. Some rules are breakable, others, such as the last podcast of the year, are not. The title track off of Raleigh, NC based American Aquarium's latest album Burn. Flicker. Die. sums the album up nicely: We burn too long then flicker and die. The songs feature tales of hard times, bad decisions, disappointments, small town living and life on the road all set to gruff vocals, bluesy guitars, hard core pedal steel and dynamic keys. The album was produced by Jason Isbell, mixed by Chris Stamey and features guest spots from Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown) and Spooner Oldham. It's reasonable for a person who has listened to music, critically or just actively, for the better part of a person's life to have a conflicted relationship with "road songs." On one hand, it's physically impossible to hear Willie's "On the Road Again" too many times. On the other, Road Song is a frustrating phenomena that infects many a touring band so that they can only write about touring.
