Last weekend was my grandmother's Celebration of Life. It would have been her 92nd birthday. We all had margaritas (it was also Cinco de Mayo; I had three) and told funny stories about her life. It was a blast, a good closure and celebration to a woman who meant a lot to a lot of people. Upon returning on Monday, I took a trip out to Anacortes and The Business, picking up the new Cloud Nothings LP, Attack On Memory , which served as inspiration for tonight's show. [...]

Sacramento-based, ambient pop group In Euphoric Company is one of those bands that too many people are going to overlook. Instead of being different for the sake of being different, like so many bands do just get attention, they've focused on creating the kind of music that I assume they enjoy playing, not to mention listening to themselves. Knowing some of their biggest influences as Bon Iver , Local Natives and American Football certainly helps you understand the overall feel of the band, but it doesn't define it, which I appreciate. All too often bands [...]

Owen - Ghost Town MMMM From his work with Cap'n Jazz to American Football, Mike Kinsella has always displayed a knack for being able to translate emotional weight through dizzying guitar riffs just as well as any singer ever could. As Owen, Kinsella has proven to be a master at arranging and layering, creating something soothing and accessible that still manages to be relatively complex and deep without losing a sense of purpose. Owen's sixth full-length album, Ghost [...]

(credit to venueszine for the picture) Living in central Illinois, there's not much going on in the cultural landscape that's worth mentioning, but Polyvinyl Records in Champaign / Urbana, IL has been a beacon of excellence since their inception as a fan-zine in 1995. This weekend, Polyvinyl is celebrating it's 15th anniversary with a huge concert on the closing day of Pygmalion Festival with a bunch of artists from their roster (including Braid, Japandroids, STRFKR, Asobi Seksu, Deerhoof, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and more). In honor of the [...]
Polyvinyl Records has been home to some of my favorite bands over the years and probably deserves a lot of credit for me discovering real indie music in high school. What with bands like Aloha , Rainer Maria , American Football , etc. the label was one of the hottest and biggest in the emo/post-emo world. It's hard to believe the label is already 15 years old in 2011 and they continue to put out great albums year after year. To celebrate their 15 years in existence, Polyvinyl has put together an incredible sampler featuring [...]

Tweet I don't enjoy it when a song sounds similar to another song, let me just clear that up from the start, but I do enjoy it when parts of songs remind me of other songs. Especially when that song is one of my all-time favorites such as " The Summer Ends " by American Football. Basically "Who Knows Who Knows" cuts a minute and a half from the intro, stays aligned for half of a verse, throws a solid drum line in the [...]
For some time now American pop-punk band Transit has been releasing acoustic covers of some great songs. Episode 13 does not disappoint with an acoustic American Football cover. A great cover of an already great song. kg --> <!-- --> <!--

Today's take me back before music made me pretentious moment comes from the summer of 2003. I realize before even making this list that it will bring obvious flaws in my taste of music to light which is something i'm fine with. My entire premise behind heycoolkid! has always been to present music that may or may not be "scene" enough for other blogs and at the same time bring attention to the music that i love and wish others would as well. ("others" meaning people whose opinions i actually care about, i'm pretty sure those people do exist, god [...]
If you can see this, then you might need a Flash Player upgrade or you need to install Flash Player if it's missing. Get Flash Player from Adobe. You may or may not have heard of these guys. The Weeknd. No "e". I've been into a ton of things lately, Miguel Jonte l, OFWGKTA (for over a year and a half fuck you all ), The fucking GO! Team , Discovery , Dan Auerbach , Jay Electronica , [...]

We've been so busy at the day job lately that we have hardly a recollection of ordering this, which we think we did at 11PM Central Time some night six weeks ago, which night was the umpteenth 15-hour day in a row. Good times. What we have here is the vinyl re-issue of Owls ' blindingly brilliant self-titled set originally released July 31, 2001. Jade Tree re-pressed the set in an edition of 550 pieces, 150 white platters and 400 black ones. What stock did not move in pre-orders was available in finer retail stores as of [...]
In what has become a bit of a ritual a group of friends and I catch up every year for Super Bowl Sunday as we habitually fall asleep before the game ends at 4am London time. This year was no different and as we crammed into a South London flat to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers [...]
After Week 3, Raz's stats with the Thrash Hits All*s was 3-0-0. That means that he had won every single one of his games. Hugh's team, Voodoo Shitshower however, was 1-2-0. That meant that he'd won one and lost two. LOL @ Hugh. Week 4 saw Raz come up against news-breaker, Bram of Metal Insider, [...]
If you thought the Week 2 review was only two days ago, know that this is merely the second of three Pigskin Destroyer 666 World Championship updates we're making this week, just to get up to speed with the rest of the Online Heavy Metal Fantasy NFL Football Community™. Sorry. We know you really care [...]
You're all definitely completely up-to-speed on what the Pigskin Destroyer 666 World Championship is, so you won't need to click that link to find out, but the good news is that Thrash Hits are flying the British flag for the abolition of American Handegg by beating the Yanks at their own game. Yep. Winning. This [...]
Earlier this summer, our American friends from The Number Of The Blog duped us into signing up for Fantasy Football. What we didn't realise or even think about at the time was that it would be "American" "Football". (Please find diagrammatic evidence about why "American Football" is a totally wrong phrase below.) Regardless, after bumbling [...]

The latest release from Chicago's Mike Kinsella (American Football, Cap'n Jazz) as the acoustic guitar-driven outfit Owen is a limited-edition 7" single recorded by his cousin (and Joan of Arc bandmate) Nate Kinsella called "Abandoned Bridges." On the flip side is a stripped-down version of Wilco's Summerteeth rocker "I'm Always In Love" — one of my personal live faves from Owen's fellow Chicagoans. The song's unforgettable melodic interludes, which are echoed in an otherworldly register on a keyboard in Wilco's version , are a perfect match for Kinsella's love for almost-overly repeated catchy riffs, as [...]
We've arrived at the second to last mega-MP3 summer songs playlist/mixtape for 2010 as summer slips away, the days get shorter, the heat cools off, and people are planning fall activities; in the cafe, we refer to them as the Last Blasts mixes. Enjoy. "Moonlighting" - Navajo Bixby "Let's Go Surfing" (Raveonettes Remix) - The Drums "Jogging Gorgeous [...] Related posts:Summer 2010 Mixtape, Vol. IV: The Flaming Lips, Surfer Blood, Holiday Shores, Julian Casablancas, Admiral Radley, Fanfarlo, Princeton Halloween Indie Rock Songs, Vol. IV: Evangelicals, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Beck, Islands, Ramones, REM & More More... I wrote about Look Mexico way back in the olden days. If you remember, I was all about the band's The Crucial EP , a mathematical throwback to when bands like American Football uncringingly flew the emo banner. Three years later, the band's come out with To Bed To Battle , an album that guitarist Ryan Slate says is less about crazy guitar parts than it is "a nice hug that brings you in." That works for me. Watch the boys go hunting and grab the song below. MP3: Look Mexico [...]

1000 Minutes, its been awhile. Infact, so long that anyone that actually reads this blog has probably forgotten what the hell its all about. If you need an explanation and a look over my list so far, follow this LINK. 82. Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man [4:07] [ time remaining 693:58 ] ( Drop IO ) ( Alt Link YSI ) This track for me is a classic example of how much your opinion of music can change when you attach a personal [...]
