"You know how when you're listening to music playing from another room? And you're singing along because it's a tune that you really love? When a door closes or a train passes so you can't hear the music anymore, but you sing along anyway... then, no matter how much time passes, when you hear the music again you're still in exact same time with it. That's what it's like." - On love, Music from Another Room First in all of my Weeklies [...]

This Saturday, January 9th, is gearing up to be the most frustrating night in recent local folk music history, thanks to a huge convergence of talent in the Boston area. I've got third row tickets to see Greg Brown at Sanders Theater - a great place to see a folkfan's favorite wry basso and sensitive songwriter, who once told me a hilarious anecdote about being asked to sign a woman's breast, "and I had to hold it down with my other hand, it was so jiggly" - so I'm not really disappointed [...]

It's hard to describe. It's pop at times, folk sometimes and occasionally country with a twang. But, it works and it's quite good. I Came Around is her debut and her voice is impressive for her age. It's a bit Anastacia with a Dixie Chicks twist. "Brand New" is on heavy rotation and the rest of the album is going down well. Boobs, beer and stab wounds. This interview has it all. With the recent release of her debut album, I Came Around , Amie Miriello 's name should be on more people's lips. If you haven't heard of her yet, a good place to start is with her interview with Joshua then be sure to swing by this sassy songstress' MySpace page to hear her powerful songs. Even if her genre of country-rock isn't quite your thing, you are sure to fall for her charming personality. Check out the interview here: Joshua, Popwreckoning: You [...]

Nothing says Halloween like a pumpkin, so for this week's "Under Cover" we thought we'd save the feature for the holiday and share a few of our favorite Smashing Pumpkins covers. For a band this huge, we couldn't pick just one song to focus on, so enjoy an array of our favorite covers as well as one by the actual band. You may have noticed that PopWreckoning has strong ties to Lawrence, KS, so we couldn't resist this cover from Lawrence band The New Amsterdams . The New Amsterdams, are a spin-off group of [...]

I dig chics that cover The Smashing Pumpkins (see Angela Aki ). Amie Miriello , who have just released her debut album earlier this month, captured this song beautifully. Her strong yet melancholy voice almost made this song her's. Almost. Watch the video, or download the track for the studio version. Download: Amie Miriello - Disarm (MP3 format)

Amie Miriello has earned a lot of nods from music blogs around (including ArjanWrites ) and I do admit of being a few legs behind the internet and media hooplah, but hey, at least I caught up! Anyway, I came across this all cover of Amie Miriello on Smashing Pumpkin's AMAY-ZING ('til now) Disarm. How do you gauge this cover? Here is the Smashing Pumpkins original for your reference. Much of the publicity around singer/guitarist Amie Miriello compares her to female artists like Ani Difranco and Tori Amos. In fact, she even gives both of them a nod in the liner notes to her new album I Came Around . It's hard not to make those comparisons. Her subversively catchy adult pop can not only sounds like Difranco (when she gets angry) and Amos (when she tickles the ivories) but when Miriello gets countrified she can evoke more sophisticated country artists such as Kathleen Edwards. Miriello possesses a big, powerful voice. When she unleashes [...]

I'm thick in the midst of an overwhelming first week at my new teaching gig -- nothing terrible, just an awful lot of newness coupled with the usual hectic pace of any new school year. Happily, coming home in a state of exhaustion has been made much easier by the serendipitous arrival of a few great folkrock and folkpop covertunes in my mailbox. Not much writing left in me today before I drop, so this will be a pretty short treatment all around, but here's three new high-cred, high gloss covers that are keeping [...]

There's no shortage of female singers looking to one up the others through the shock value of their songs' content (cough, cough, Katy Perry) or through their behavior (cough, cough, Amy Winehouse). Amie Miriello takes a different approach and instead relies on the quality of her songs and the power of her voice to take [...]
