It was a typical Saturday afternoon for me, doing the Queen Street record store shuffle. I usually start at University and make my way West stopping at Kopps to flip through classic funk 45's looking for dope drum breaks, then I move on to Metropolis to flip through the breaks and house music, then Slinky to find new Hip Hop, Funk and Electro records. If I haven't found anything by then I'll usually drop by Cosmos for their Jazz and dope collection of original old school Hip Hop. Then, If I still don't find anything, I'll stop in at Rotate [...]

It has indeed been a while since i heard some good new hip hop. Maybe i haven't been looking it the right places. Maybe i haven't been looking at all, i certainly have been getting much more excited by other genres of music other that HH of late. Or maybe I'm just getting old. Whatever. Anyway i came across this the other day and it made me sit up and take notice, so i thought i would share it with you. Ammoncontact is hip hop and jazz influenced electronica. It's on Ninja Tune if that helps understanding. Carlos Nino and Fabian Ammon are Los Angeles-based production duo Ammoncontact. Over the past 7 years they have released their unique brand of jazz and funk-influenced hip hop on a wide variety of celebrated indie labels such as Plug Research. Recently they signed an exclusive recording deal with Ninja Tune. The majority of Ammoncontact's releases have been instrumental, with sparse vocal elements and samples and an [...]

The shuffle starts our week off with a short, but sweet, song... Ammoncontact is another one of the 2,748 projects of L.A.'s ubiquitous Carlos Nino, this one a team-up with one Mr. Fabain Ammon (check out one of Carlos' other groups, soul-jazz outfit Build An Ark, here ). The tunes are real heady, abstract instrumental hip-hop, except on this album they have vocals on almost all tracks, hence the clever album title. Anyhoo, here's your taste, with vocals by, I think, this guy . [...]

The new remix collection from Telefon Tel Aviv has some nice treats on it. It's a reasonably chill affair overall as you'd expect, with appearances by Bebel Gilberto, American Analog Set, and a surprisingly reserved take on a Nine Inch...
