Aaron Embry's solo material has often taken a back seat to his work with other artists — he's been party to albums and tours for a host of A-listers, he produced Avi Buffalo's debut album, and most recently he has played keyboards for Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. And his 2008 album as Amnion remains an underground classic. With Edward Sharpe on a bit of break after two years of exhaustive touring, Embry has been holed up in Ojai. The early recordings that have emerged are chillingly beautifu, and although we don't generally post demos, "No [...]

It's been almost a year since Haiti was devastated by a 7.0 earthquake. Relief and reconstructions efforts still need support, and the L.A. music community is stepping up. A group called Plays Well With Others has curated a sterling 18-track compilation titled "To Haiti With Love," featuring songs by artists such as Gary Jules, Love Like Fire, Samuel Stewart, John Carpenter, His Orchestra and the Parson Redheads. It's well worth the minimum $5 donation. Heck, the Jimmy Tamborello remix of His Orchestra's "Attached" might be worth 5 bucks alone: [...]

The debut EP from Boyz Sküle and the Precious Medals sure does sound like the music's architect, Brett Farkas, is having fun — maybe even as much fun as the Detroit native had (ahem) coming up with the obtuse band name. Farkas, who's played with soul legend Solomon Burke , pop guys the 88 and highly regard indie rockers Amnion , recorded "I Love You So Much" over five months last year with a rotating cast of players. Some of his hometown influences come through, even on the glammy stomp "747 (Wingman Woman)." Farkas [...]

I haven't done one of these in a long time. Here's an update on local bands: Division Day just announced a slew of new tour dates. Their new album, Visitation , comes out on Dangerbird on 8/18/09. It's going to catch you off guard (in a very good way). Check out their Myspace page for some streams and tour dates. Buy tickets for their September 2nd show at Spaceland HERE . Go to their label site to download a free remix. Speaking of Dangerbird, Sea Wolf have completed [...]

After releasing their fantastic debut album AmenNamO , Amnion is back with "Better Day", which is going to be released as a single on Tuesday. The bands' music has a way of always sounding happy, but having some melancholy tones to it. The vocals are shared by husband and wife duo Aaron and Nikki Embry, although when playing shows, group singing always goes down. Amnion is part of a budding LA music scene, that features other Tape favorites, Avi Buffalo, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnificent Zeros. The single, "Better Day" features a jolly piano line, [...]

Amnion (Photo By Jeff Koga) I completely missed the boat on Amnion last year. In the past few months their debut album AmenamO has been in regular rotation as I work at my desk in the office. The band are now hosting a remix "contest" for their new single "Better Days" which will be unveiled via the band's Band Camp account next week . It isn't actually a "contest" since anyone who re-mixes the song wins, but regardless they're excited about you participating. I'll be doing my own lil [...]

[A heaping helping of birthday wishes to David Byrne, and now to capsulize a busy night in the city:] Even if you steer clear of the boldfaced names playing the bigger rooms — Mos Def at the House of Blues, Murs and Tech N9ne at the Key Club, the Indigo Girls at the El Rey Theatre — tonight has a lot to offer. Three of L.A. most promising up-and-comers, Afternoons , the Happy Hollows and Warpaint , combine to fill [...]
Los Angeles: huge, sprawling, and eclectic, has been likened to microcosm of the country as whole - truly a melting pot of various cultures, ethnicities, tastes and influences. So is her music. With various scenes and sub-scenes, rarely has there been a defining "sound" that marks the overall zeitgeist of what is happening in the [...]

Eleven L.A. artists cover Paul (and Linda) McCartney on the new charity compilation "RAM on L.A.," being released digitally on Monday through local blog Aquarium Drunkard's Autumn Tone Records. Justin Gage, the man behind the blog and the label, explains that as he hatched the idea for a compilation of local bands last year, he sought a common thread for the collection. "A revisited appreciation of Paul McCartney's 1971 solo album, RAM, had begun to see a resurgence of sorts within a number of local Eastside artists, coming up in conversations and on the [...]

Three-quarters of Avi Buffalo ("or Avi Buffalo Music," the barefooted 18-year-old frontman tells the crowd in a voice you're not sure has hurdled puberty yet) is still in high school, but five minutes into the Long Beach band's set you've forgotten that, at their age, proms and final exams ought to be bigger concerns than albums and record deals. Buffalo, whose real name "is really long, with a hyphen," he says, is a preternaturally gifted guitarist who crafts swoon-worthy folk-rock full of nooks and crannies, exposed nerves and shimmering soundscapes — think an incipient [...]

Just wanted to say Merry Christmas to you and yours with a special holiday treat from Amnion. See you in 2 days LA! [MP3] Amnion - Little Drummer Brother
photo by Matthew Craig Back to the normal...less rock, more talk... 1. Naomi Shelton - "What Have You Done" (mp3) This sixtysomething Alabama-based soul singer emanates a surly demeanor. Shelton, who is poised to release her latest 7 inch single, What Have You Done , via Dap Tone Records, punctiliously implements painstaking, guttural utterances. Like the deep bellowing of a bull, her vocal approach brings to mind the past masters of R&B, including Mr. Sam Cooke. Strangely enough, "What Have You Done" sort of reminds me of a [...]

Good things tend to beget good things. Here's a recent example of this: A few months ago I was turned on the the Amnion album by one of my favorite L.A. artists of the past year, Frankel. Thanks to his recommendation Amnion's LP from last year, AmenNAmO 9rghmxs, has quickly worked its way [...]
Forget Whale sounds, this is as soothing as several Paracetamol on a Sunday morning. If only Spiritualized had used this template for all those Gospel tinged albums they produced after they ditched the sound of Spacemen 3 (thankfully 'Song in A&E' appears to be a return to form). Amnion is the work of husband and wife team Nikki and Aaron Embry (who toured with Elliott Smith in 2000) and a host
Now that we're just getting over that heinous cough, everyone else is getting sick. Sorry about that. Well, if you're feeling well enough, try and make it out to Amnion's first show of the year at 3 of Clubs tonight. Wednesdays at the club are a new weekly called Marathon Live, hosted by Brandon McCulloch (formerly of the great band Silver), and they have been amazing so far. Cass McCombs was a
Aaron and Nikki please look away, we're going to get fanatical right about now -- but we'll try and keep it short. We can't recall the exact details but it was roughly ten years. We had just started writing for a certain publication and were asked to do a night at Fais Do Do. Thursdays (or was it Tuesdays?) at the club were called Mephisto and the resident bands one particular month were the
