One thing about krautrock: so many of these bands were dark, hypnotic, experimental, epic???and also full of humor. Faust, Neu!, and Amon D????l II all regularly featured total goofball vocals or musical interludes. The unfortunate thing is that really Faust was the only band that could pull it off consistently. Neu! was successful about half the time, and Amon D????l II essentially ruined every single song in which they tried to inject anything resembling levity. That was my main complaint when I first heard them last year, picking up their second album, Yeti . That album had enough mindblowing [...]

So we come to "the rest." These are albums that aren't bad; in fact many of them are quite good. They just, for whatever reason, didn't force their way into that part of my brain that compelled me play them over and over and over. Nevertheless I still recommend everything here. Sometimes the albums in this category are slow burners, either melting into a bunch of my playlists or just consistently sneaking their way into rotation. The Flatlanders, More a Legend Than a Band Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, 100 Days, 100 [...]
We're certainly reaching out into the more obscure corners of embeddable video players this weekend. This is a 1975 Amon Duul II performance, of Surrounded By Stars: [The embed seems slightly flaky - in case, here's a direct link ] [Part of Amon Duul II weekend ]
From Germany's answer to Top Of The Pops, Beat Club, this is a 1970 performance: [Part of Amon Dull II weekend ]
An extract from a live performance of the Phallus Dei album: [Part of the Amon Duul II weekend ]
Something slightly Proggy and a lot Teutonic this weekend - that'll teach you for complaining about Britpop. Inspired by Rob Hughes' replaying of a 1973 Peel Session this week on 6Music, we're dipping into the back catalogue of Amon Duul II. Without Amon Duul II, it's probable there wouldn't have been Krautrock as we know it. Founded in 1969 out of a schism in a commune-based improv band, Amon Duul II were the more successful of the two factions. They achieved chart success in the UK - along with the Peel Session - but a move to Atlantic [...]
As I was leaving work last evening, I checked my cellphone and noticed I had three text messages and a voice mail. This is not entirely uncommon, seeing as how I am an immensely popular public figure who has to constantly deal with the demands of friends and family who often claim to "never see or hear from" me. The messages were fairly standard, your "What are we doing for dinner?" "Yo fag, call me" run-of-the-mill type stuff. The voicemail, though, was completely unexpected. It was from a woman who claimed to be the manager of the Pizza Hut I [...]
