Amy LaVere - Let Yourself Go (Come On)

Amy LaVere has worked through some heavy stuff over the last few years, to say the least. She broke up with her boyfriend of six years (who was also her drummer), and her musical mentor and producer, Jim Dickinson, suddenly died.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Tender and sweet, yet pale and dissonant, Amy LaVere is a singer that has a wonderful voice for songs that are beautiful, but are often somber and sorrowful. Such emotion is certainly reflected in her latest album, Stranger Me , whose title track you can give a listen. Amy LaVere | Stranger Me This album was produced by Craig Silvey, who has also worked with the Arcade Fire. He spoke about recording this album with Amy: [...]

KITCHEN'S FLOOR, FAT HISTORY MONTH, PACIFIC CITY NIGHTLIFE VISION BAND, FUZZY CLOAKS ( East End , 203 SE Grand) Your fridge is empty and leaking, causing the linoleum to curl at the seams of the walls. But you don't have the cash or the willpower to do anything about it. It reeks, and it's depressing, so you wander aimlessly until you pass by Fred Meyer and decide to steal some Mars bars for lunch. They bust you and lock you up for a few, but at least they're feeding you and it doesn't smell like shit. Kitchen's Floor—all [...]

Amy LaVere may look familiar if you've noticed her acting in films such as "Walk the Line" and "Hustle and Flow." However, her most charming method of telling a story is through her Americana-pop. The singer-songwriter from Memphis, Tenn., follows up her album "Anchors & Anvil" (produced by the late Jim Dickinson) with "Stranger Me," a record full of disarming anti-love songs that capture her ability to further explore textures and juxtaposition. Produced by Craig Silvey, who took part in mixing Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs," her latest collection of songs are elegantly dissonant with some songs paired with upbeat [...]

You Can't Keep Me Killing Him Amy is this badass gal from Memphis who plays the upright bass. Her songs are very eclectic, ranging from [...]
LaVere captures the bizarre spirit of Memphis's past and evokes the music of the black and white era (both in terms of movies and race) that has an edge of danger mixed with cheap sex. Be wary of short people. The little among us are the kind to pick a fight and then consider it fair to play dirty because they are at a height disadvantage. The diminutive folk have a deep, nasty streak that they try to keep hidden, but then the shorties gleefully let it out without provocation at the drop of a hat. I should know. [...]
