I decided to wrap up my quartet of crushes for June with Amy MacDonald , one of my favorite British Scottish imports from last year who's finally getting the chance to test American waters in '08. MacDonald's debut album, This Is The Life easily won a place on my year-end best albums list thanks to a well-balanced mix of strong songwriting, catchy melodies, and a full folk-pop sound courtesy her excellent backing band. Back in April, I had the chance to attend her first American gig at the Great Scott in Allston, and [...]
Kangaroo. Sheep Alligator Big Fish. Underwater Fish. The Family Dog. Mouse. And after all that, Snake needs to go potty.
I wish my top 5 were from the new Old 97's and Amy Ray albums, but I haven't convinced myself to part with the money yet. Soon.... Sorry if any of these are repeats...I feel like I may have posted To Absent Votes and So Long, Superman before, but that may have been elsewhere. Anyway... Firewater - So Long, Superman . This song just rocks. Good strong rhythm, excellent for singing along. This man knows how to string words together to make lyrics that get stuck in my [...]
amy macdonald - poison prince [ link 2 ] [though this single had a limited release last year, it looks like the powers that be have deemed it strong enough for a new push; along with a brand new video! i have a quiet appreciation for amy macdonald. maybe it's something about her deep alto voice and folky brogue that just keeps me discovering gems from her every few months. the album, this is the life , is out now and well... it's really good.] http://feeds.feedburner.com/Wo ngiesMusicWorld

MY MORNING JACKET-Evil Urges. No, they ain't indie no more. But they still have the indie sound. And I have a real weakness for this band. Z is one of my favorite albums of the last 10 years.
Paris Falls are a Houston-based husband-and-wife team who have self-released two CD volumes of their own compositions (available for cheap at their myspace page). They show remarkable range, from catchy pop ("Walk Away") to edgier jam-rock ("Shallow"), and much in between. Even the "Untitled" instrumental from Volume 2 is good. Rock instrumentals [...]
Their first album was one of the great pop/rock albums in recent history. Their second . . . Not so much. Because they asked to be taken seriously, there, as songwriters. (An acoustic song about a junkie uncle? From the authors of the lyric "You had a boyfriend who looked a [...]
we are scientists - after hours [ link 2 ] [with their album brain thrust mastery coming out this week, it's really great to see these brooklynites release a fun catchy indie pop song to accompany their welcome return. plus any band that is willing to make their lead singer come off as a d**k is a good thing!] mystery jets feat laura marling - young love [...]
David Bowie's Queen Bitch , from his classic 1971 album Hunky Dory , experienced a revival of sorts when it was featured in the trailer for Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic in 2004, which is admittedly when I first heard and fell in love with the song. I've definitely noticed a heightened exposure to the song in the past couple years, whether it's heard as pre-show music before a concert, an influx of covers, or its inclusion in last year's Rock Band as a downloadable track. Not since ELO's Mr. Blue Sky can I [...]
