Just in case your not clued into to this thought I'd post a few videos featuring a trio of great artists from The 78 Project. "The 78 Project is a documentary and recording journey inspired by Alan Lomax and his quest to capture music where it lived throughout the early 20th century. Our project brings the spirit of his work into the present as we pair breakthrough musicians with the songs and the fascinating recording technology of the past. With just one microphone, one authentic 1930′s PRESTO direct-to-disc recorder, and one blank lacquer [...]
Amy LaVere - Railroad Boy (Died of Love)
North Mississippi All-Stars guitarist Luther Dickinson is the creative catalyst behind The Wandering , a new roots music and Americana band featuring a quartet of fine female singers and instrumentalists: Shannon McNally (guitar), Amy LaVere (bass), Valerie June (banjo), and Sharde Thomas (drums). Recorded in just three days at Dickinson's Mississippi studio, debut album Go On Now, You Can't Stay Here (May 8) delivers its mostly traditional blues and country covers with a raw, disheveled energy, the women trading off vocals as they lay down a loose flurry of acoustic backing with [...]

Last Friday evening, singer/songwriter Amy LaVere played the World Café Live in Philadelphia with her band, opening for headliner Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes. For those who are unfamiliar with LaVere, she is easily recognizable, not only from her rough and powerful Americana sound, but also from the large upright bass she wields in front of the microphone. Though it's a little uncommon for the frontman (or woman) of a band to play such a visually obstructive instrument, LaVere's skills on the bass made it both a visual pleasure as well as an energetically charged performance. Amy LaVere // Interview & Review Review & Interview - Amy LaVere Most of those at Mercy Lounge on Thursday night came out to catch the Blues-Rock solo project of Black Crowes' guitarist, Rich Robinson; however, many left a new fan of opening act, Amy LaVere . A seemingly unassuming LaVere squashes any immediate labels one might give based on her petite frame and docile voice when she takes full control of her upright bass. Suddenly, it's clear [...]

Never underestimate a little woman with a stand-up bass. Amy LaVere might seem and sound like America's Southern sweetheart at first, but give her a minute and you'll soon hear that there's a lot going on in that seasoned soul. Based in traditional Country and Americana, LaVere takes those old-school sounds to new places with touches of Jazz, Funk, and Rock 'N' Roll fueled with fiery lyrics and eloquent storytelling. LaVere will be opening for Rich Robinson ( of Black Crowes fame) on March 1st at Mercy Lounge, here in Nashville. Listen [...]

Amy LaVere - Let Yourself Go (Come On)

Amy LaVere has worked through some heavy stuff over the last few years, to say the least. She broke up with her boyfriend of six years (who was also her drummer), and her musical mentor and producer, Jim Dickinson, suddenly died.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Tender and sweet, yet pale and dissonant, Amy LaVere is a singer that has a wonderful voice for songs that are beautiful, but are often somber and sorrowful. Such emotion is certainly reflected in her latest album, Stranger Me , whose title track you can give a listen. Amy LaVere | Stranger Me This album was produced by Craig Silvey, who has also worked with the Arcade Fire. He spoke about recording this album with Amy: [...]

KITCHEN'S FLOOR, FAT HISTORY MONTH, PACIFIC CITY NIGHTLIFE VISION BAND, FUZZY CLOAKS ( East End , 203 SE Grand) Your fridge is empty and leaking, causing the linoleum to curl at the seams of the walls. But you don't have the cash or the willpower to do anything about it. It reeks, and it's depressing, so you wander aimlessly until you pass by Fred Meyer and decide to steal some Mars bars for lunch. They bust you and lock you up for a few, but at least they're feeding you and it doesn't smell like shit. Kitchen's Floor—all [...]

Amy LaVere may look familiar if you've noticed her acting in films such as "Walk the Line" and "Hustle and Flow." However, her most charming method of telling a story is through her Americana-pop. The singer-songwriter from Memphis, Tenn., follows up her album "Anchors & Anvil" (produced by the late Jim Dickinson) with "Stranger Me," a record full of disarming anti-love songs that capture her ability to further explore textures and juxtaposition. Produced by Craig Silvey, who took part in mixing Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs," her latest collection of songs are elegantly dissonant with some songs paired with upbeat [...]
