One special show: ► Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" remains one of my favorite albums of all time — along with the Posies' "Frosting on the Beater," it was the best power-pop album of its era, and deservedly earns mentions on any shortlist of the top power-pop albums ever made. Sweet's sweet melodies and bittersweet lyrics were juxtaposed on the album with gnarly guitar solos from the late Robert Quine (that's Quine, who played with Richard Hell, Lou Reed and Lloyd Cole, among others, on "Girlfriend's" title track) and Television's Richard Lloyd. Now, 20 years after [...]
The 2nd New Los Angeles Folk Fest goes off Saturday in a strange, wonderful and probably overheated place known as Zorthian Ranch in Altadena. To give you a taste of the event's deliriously eclectic lineup — the music ranges from old-timey, the fractured folk to psychedelia, with a lot in between — this edition of our Buzzsicle mixtapes is devoted to 10 of the artists playing Saturday. Enjoy. ||| Download: Buzzsicle 15 ||| Also: After the jump, the tracklist, [...]

This Anenon Drone Mix of Ana Caravelle's "Where Have You Been?" comes to us from the Basic Climb: Reimagined remix LP off Non Projects. The LA harpist/singer/songwriter's debut is restyled on Reimagined by such electronic heavyweights as Dntel and Take and on this "Drone Mix" Non Project's founder Anenon. There's an excellent building quality to the track with a payoff in the tune's final moments that is truly spectacular. Turn this heater way up. Ana Caravelle - Where Have You Been?
Nice to see Cudi getting back to his hipster sampling roots on this one. A lot more experimental than some of his newest tracks, "Maniac" will test his more commercial fan base. Cudi enlists Cage to help him rap over St. Vincent's "The Strangers." Kid Cudi- Maniac (Ft. Cage) Deerhoof just announced that they have [...]

I think the last thing anyone expected from the beat-scene is a harp sporting 22 year old who's already garnering the obligatory Joanna Newsom comparisons. The only similarities between her and the most famous indie harpist of our time are that they both choose the harp as their "main instrument", and they're both women. Other [...]

Today Ana Caravelle 's debut album Basic Climb is officially out. I just got the record the other day and am absolutely blown away. I would discribe it but these videos that Dustin did do a way better job than I could. This album is definitely worth picking up and can be found on iTunes and in cool awesome record stores or on the NONPROJECTS website. Congratulations Ana! You deserve it. The debut album by the Los Angeles composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist heightened my musical senses and danced with my reality. "Basic Climb" drops today More like it: INTRODUCING: Ana Caravelle INTERVIEW: Ana Caravelle Makes the Harp Hip Album Review: "Red" Datarock

Ana Caravelle's music reminds me of White Hinterland's Phylactery Factory - well, actually, it reminds me of a brief, tumultuous couple of weeks in 2007 when she was going by the name Anahita Navab and I was hooking up with her roommate. (Small world. I was, of course, terrifically young and confused and sad that year, which is probably enough biography.) But Caravelle's music does remind me of White Hinterland's dark whimsy and, due to the harp being her chosen instrument, Joanna Newsom. On "Where Have You Been," she sings, "The coyotes have gone wild again" [...]

Off the Books transpires in less than 24 hours. The plan had been to devote separate posts to each artist, but I'm overambitious and need an intern to help me get that chicken. I'm loathe to do these link dump type posts, especially for artists worthy of well-chosen words, but time isn't on my side if I'm going to catch Dungen tonight. You understand. If you're in the LA area and reading this, I assume you're either considering going, or staying home and watching the deadly combination of Boardwalk Empire , Eastbound and Down , [...]
