Concert Review: Joel Plaskett, Massey Hall, Toronto, Saturday, May 23, 2009 Massey Hall is arguably the most famous stage in Toronto. The acoustics are spectacular, and the majority of the seats have excellent site lines. Opened in 1894, and designated as a Heritage Property in 1975, Massey Hall has hosted such venerable performers and dignitaries such as King George V and his wife Queen Mary, Winston Churchill, the Dalai Lama, Luciano Pavarotti, George Gershwin, Oscar Peterson, and Bob Dylan among many, many others. Many famous live albums [...]
For fans of the music on Songs:Illinois this coming Saturday's booking at Fitzgerald's is a dream come true. Ana Egge has just released her new record Road To My Love and has just picked up a nice review in Rolling Stone. Buy it here . Rachel Ries is a longtime favorite of S:I who despite her talent doesn't play out in Chicago near enough. So here's your chance to see both in the comfy confines of Chicago's finest roadhouse. Bully Of New - Ana Egge [...]

The second annual In the Dead of Winter festival kicked off last night and certainly lived up to its name, delivering both a horrendous storm and some fantastic music. We dropped into The Company House to pick up our passes and the venue is beautiful. Intimate and warm, it really felt inviting, but we jumped across the street to see the songwriter circle featuring Halifax's Ryan MacGrath , Brooklyn's Ana Egge and Ottawa's Lynne Hanson . Before getting into this, hats off to the [...]

IDOW is getting closer, and we've been slow on talking about some of the acts that will be in town for the show. One of the most pleasant surprises is the appearance of Ana Egge . You may not know it, but you've probably heard Ana's honey coated vocals countless times and swooned along accordingly. She's worked with Ron Sexsmith and according to our sources (Joel), she and Rose Cousins sing harmonies for a fair amount of the tracks on the new Joel Plaskett record. [...]

What with finals coming up, I've fallen behind on my feedreader, and just today discovered Heather's notice of Before the Goldrush , an amazing new covers compilation to benefit Teach for America . The digital-only release includes a huge set of new-generation, predominantly indie-folk artists paying tribute to the singer-songwriters of the sixties and seventies who laid the foundation for their own success. As an inner city teacher and a coverfolk blogger, I cannot recommend a better way to support the totality of the things I love. [...]

There appears to be a new song from Ana Egge's upcoming release. This song recently appeared on Ana's website. A quick perusal of her back catalog confirms that this song has not appeared before and thus may be the first thing we've heard off of her upcoming album Road To My Love . "New Tattoo" is as lush and sensual a sound as I've heard from Ana and the whistling and romantic horns are a nice addition (as always). Ana's got a February residency at The Living Room on Tuesdays [...]

Rose Polenzani will compete as a finalist tomorrow night in Mountain Stage 's NewSong Festival , so I sought out her album When The River Meets The Sea and fell for her beautiful voice. Rose recorded this unusual and lovely album with Session Americana, and it features guest vocals by Jennifer Kimball and Ana Egge. If I could hit you as hard as I wanted, I'd have kissed you softer when you died. One star falls on the gravesite, someone loves [...]

Ana Egge : Wedding Dress [ purchase ] Songwriting challenge: tell a story without using any verbs. In Wedding Dress, Ana Egge sketches three characters, one in each verse. The chorus describes a wedding dress, which is used as a metaphor. Put it together and the listener knows exactly what happened. Amazing!

For most of my life, The Kinks have been one of those bands that other kinds of people listened to. That I respect these people, and appreciate their inclusion of the odd Kinks tune on mixtapes and playlists, is kind of moot; the end result has been that while I like the poppy sound The Kinks bring to the table, it's the kind of music I accept as background music, enjoyable but already there, part of that diverse mix of sound which fills the air around us. And the continued prominence of Kinks [...]

She drawls out the lyrics like a yawn, but the kind that settles in your soul like a sigh. Egge knows that lethargy itself is a symptom of sensual passion.

Even in the unassuming realms of alt-country and americana you don't find many bands that use a lofi approach. The majority of bands that are outside of the Nashville establishment still are under the belief that production values matter. The Juanita Family either don't have that same ethos or are so rough hewn and hard scrabble that they simply haven't mastered those production techniques. But for me the sound of The Juantia Family is pure country. Cruel Hand Of Fate [...]

Matt The Electrician continues to see each and every band I would have searched out. Bastard! Matt's new record, One Thing Right , is out now. You can buy it here . Thursday March 15th, Day Something! (Brett Dennen at Soup Kitchen) "When I last left you, I was running out the door to play at the soup kitchen, and indeed I did play there as planned…..i split my 4 song set with AJ Roach , one of my booking roster [...]
