It's Thursday, already: ► The Dandy Warhols , back with their eighth album "This Machine" (out in April), headline the Wiltern. Sleepy Sun and 1776 support. ► South African rockers the Parlotones [ see Tuesday's post ] visit the Roxy behind their new album "Journey Through the Shadows," supported by Queen Caveat, Ryan Star and From Indian Lakes. ► And Beach Fossils bring their jangly guitar rock to the Echoplex, where Catwalk opens. Also: [...]

For those unaware, Ritmo Machine is the duo of DJ Latin Bitman and percussionist Eric Bobo . Chances are you have at least heard the work of the latter if you have blasted the Beastie Boys ' Check Your Head or Ill Communication . Bobo was featured on both of those albums and also toured extensively with the seminal Brooklyn act. Not only that, but he's a mainstay of the Cypress Hill camp and several other groups. But in the case of this post, Bobo's flexing his work on the skins with [...]

The new promo for Rockstar's latest video game, "Max Payne 33 included a familiar sound. The clip was released over a week ago, however, I barely got to the track titled, "Tears," that's being used to promote the shoot em' up video game. "Tears" is a creeper with its' a slow menacing beat and manipulated voice. M.I.A. gave us a teaser with a banger of a track with "Come Walk With Me." The single comes from her upcoming album, "Matangi," and the accompanying video appears to have been taken from "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo." [...]

La Bala, Ana Tijoux Nacional Records, Chile Rating: 74 by Carlos Reyes I didn't care much about the star-making appearance of "1977" on last year's infamous summer playlist by Thom Yorke, but when that song popped up on an episode of what's arguably the best TV series of all time (Breaking Bad), I confess I got territorial at the grace of music supervisor Thomas Golubic. Which comes to show that songs do evolve in the course of different narratives. The cosmopolitanism of [...]

Ana Tijoux's follow up to "19773 is about to hit the streets next week (January 31) with her release, "La Bala," via Nacional Records. If you're unaware of her story, Tijoux's family fled a Pinochet dictated Chile as political refugees to France to escape the horrors left behind. The second album is a more calculated approach to her whip-smart lyrics that won't come at you like a punch on the mouth but more sideways than anything. The title track appears as if Tijoux's smoking a cigarette blindfolded in front of a Chilean firing squad spitting her [...]

On her follow-up to the stunning 1977, the Chilean MC shifts her focus from the personal to the political, with an eye toward the current unrest in her home country. Ana Tijoux's new album, La Bala, comes out Jan. 31. Read more »

IVAN: Uncharacteristically clear skies heralded the second day of Outside Lands. Ana Tijoux IVAN: Chilean rapper Ana Tijoux made up for the previous night's lack of hip-hop satisfaction. Taking the stage with a band and DJ, her set combined jazzy, sample-laden grooves recalling Do You Want More?!!!??!-era Roots with a constant yet smooth flow akin to a Ghostface Killah. Rapping mostly in Spanish save for a brief English freestyle, Tijoux alternated from hard-hitting socio-political conscious rhymes like Suve to laid-back [...]

Looking at San Francisco's Outside Lands Festival line-up , I feel overwhelmed. There are a ton of awesome bands playing (sometimes at the same time!) over three days, starting with this Friday, August 12. Luckily, being a San Francisco resident, I won't have to travel too far to see some of the crème de la crème of 20112s indie music scene. I recently helped my friends over at Holiday Matinee compile a killer playlist of our favorite songs from musicians playing at the upcoming festival, so I wanted to do a little [...]

Another night, another great show at the Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass. This time we were treated to the sensuous and beautiful rhythmic flow of the indie hip-hop artist Ana Tijoux. Frankly, I'm still surprised her tour took her here of all places, especially how the majority of the performance's audience turned out to be mature to older white women. Not exactly the most lively and ethnically diverse crowd New England has to offer... but at least we were there to represent the under-40 crowd. The opener, A Severe Joy, plays like [...]

Great week, wasn't it? Take in some tracks of note from the previous days, a few old hits that came to mind, and maybe some stuff hopefully you've never heard of. (How can a pavilion be fluxing anyway?) Where You Are - Cali Swag District Options - Gomez We Used Technology (But Technology Let Us Down) - Maus Haus Sunset In July - 311 Crystal Meth Christian - Teddybears ft. The Flaming Lips She Is The New Thing - The Horrors [...]

Oh Melon, I thought you'd never ask. The folks at Outside Lands have outdone themselves this year. What a line up! Here are some of the acts I'm most excited about: Little Dragon - "Twice" The Stone Foxes - "Stomp" Julieta Venegas - "Otra Cosa" Lord Huron - "Mighty" Phantogram - "When I'm Small" Sia - "You've Changed" [...]
