A little bit gentle… a little bit runnin’ wild… Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer: Child Ballads There’s something magical in albums like Child Ballads: where two people seem destined to play together and specifically play these songs together. Here Mitchell and Hamer take on a set of old English folk songs, long stories told through the harmony of their voices and acoustic guitars. Simple, beautiful, perfect. This past weekend marked the sixth annual Downtown Music Festival — a miniature SXSW-style event featuring plenty of new, rising artists, scattered across multiple NYC venues, all within a one-mile radius. A seasoned festival goer knows there are two approaches to these types of festivals: choose a venue and watch all the artists playing there, or exert the most mental and physical energy possible by attempting to catch multiple sets at overlapping venues. Of course, we chose the latter, knowing exactly what we were getting ourselves into. Sort of. Racing to six or seven shows a night in [...]

photos by PSquared Photography Anais Mitchell , who is carrying a child herself (congrats Anais!), recently released an album with Jefferson Hamer called Child Ballads (learn more about that at NPR ). Anais and Jefferson have been touring that album, and played songs from it in NYC at Joe's Pub on 4/16 and 4/17. We have some pictures in this post from the first intimate show, which Robert Sarazin Blake [...]

[ EDITOR'S NOTE: In this week's issue , A.L. Adams wrote about Anaïs Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer 's upcoming collection of Child Ballads, intuitively titled Child Ballads and culled from the traditional English and Scottish folk songs collected by Francis James Child in the 19th century. Mitchell is a phenomenal songwriter in her own right, responsible for the 2010 folk opera Hadestown and last year's excellent Young Man in America album. She thoughtfully answered Adams' questions about this collaboration with Hamer; we unfortunately couldn't get her responses into the [...]
Anaïs Mitchell's Child Ballads will be released on March 19th. The album finds my favorite female singer-songwriter collaborating with Jefferson Hamer on covers of traditional English and Scottish folk ballads famously collected by Francis James Child. As Anaïs herself says, "most of the heroines are pregnant and most of the heroes are named 'Willie.'" I [...]

A highly anticipated new release from Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer is starting to make the rounds, and though it's only early February, we're going to go out on a limb and declare Child Ballads an early contender for best tradfolk album of the year. And we're clearly not going to be alone, either: with 6 weeks left to its March 19th US release date, the seven track album has already garnered high and well-deserved praise from Pitchfork, and a full-page feature in today's edition of The Sun seems a harbinger of loud and voluminious [...]

Following on the widespread acclaim for last year's Young Man In America , Anais Mitchell’s new album, Child Ballads , which she recorded with friend and collaborator Jefferson Hamer, is a collection of traditional songs from our very own British Isles. Named after their 19th century collector, Francis James Child, and already picking up some very decent reviews, it is out in March. Have a listen to the first of the seven tracks, Willie of Winsbury - a ballad of a king seeking revenge, [...]

I have no idea what folk music really is, do you? Nowadays, here in the 21st century, ascribing genre descriptors to musical forms is pretty meaningless when you can shuffle from John Cage to John Mellencamp in nanoseconds. When I say folk music, your brain might conjure up images of country people stomping their boots ... Continue reading
Guest Post By: Brendan Muruch favorite Anaïs Mitchell was featured in a recent NPR Tiny Desk Concert. The stripped down performance makes her poetry even more poignant. Featured in this performance are the songs "Shepherd," "Tailor" and the title track from her album, Young Man in America (Muruch's #1 of 2012). You can see the [...]

I have loafed about this Christmas - reading, drinking, watching films and generally living the life, which has been great, but now I find myself with just a few hours in which to throw this together… To be honest, it feels like I’ve already done this once already having been asked to nominate five 2012 records for the January Lpgrp session. I managed it with some difficulty (particularly as my Lpgrp line manager made me nominate one to be the best of them all – wild stab…), so seven should be a piece of (Christmas) pudding, eh? [...]
