Toronto - Honestly, this was a bit of a crazy night. I started off the evening at the Monster Jam monster truck show, followed that with Anamanaguchi 's set at Wrongbar, and then capped off the night with a trip to the Bovine. That's at least one too many things for one evening, yet i did it anyways. Consider it conditioning for all the club hopping I'll be doing in a couple months' time for SXSW and CMW. Except without the monster trucks. Really, SXSW should have monster trucks though. I mean, it is in Texas after all. Everything's [...]

When the temperature drops people tend to hide in their apartments, which was evident in Parkdale on Saturday night as I made my way to Wrongbar. Once I got to my destination, however, it seemed as though I'd found where everyone was hiding. All the kids had braved the cold and come out early to catch Anamanaguchi with Extreme Animals and Toronto's own Moon King . Cloaked in neon with smiles pasted on their faces, the crowd danced happily to the indie chiptunes (hyperlink not a condescension, I had personally never heard the word [...]

I don't have a strong opinion about Das Racist, every so often someting pops up from them that you can't deny the slacker brilliance. I grabbed Heems's recently released mixtape 'Nehru Jackets' on a whim and was pretty impressed. More than a few tracks are built around awesome chopped samples of Indian vocalists paired with some quite decent beats. As well, the mixtape has guest spots from the likes of Danny Brown, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Das Racist's Kool A.D., Action Bronson, Childish Gambino and Despot. 'Nerhu Jackets' is retty good for a guy who broke onto [...]
Here's an earlier than usual post before this blog blacks-out for the day to protest PIPA & SOPA and to defend online freedom. Please ejoy this flashy fan-made video for Anamanaguchi's "Blackout City"

SXSW is just a little over two months away, and I'll be making my return in 2012 as a legitimately badged representative of SoundLand, the music festival I coordinate. (HOORAY!) Having taken two years off from South By and the better part of a year off from new music in general, it's no surprise that the first three rounds of announced acts playing the music portion of the fest are chock full of a shitload of unfamiliar names. So I'm checkin' 'em out, one by one. Let's dive in, shall we? ------------------- [...]

♫ Anamanaguchi - Airbrushed (RAC Remix) Whew. What a busy week! Hyundai's Re:Mix lab was a wild success and kept my evening full and free. The best way to be. Friday night was a ripping live set from Anamanaguchi and their 2 on-stage Nintendo consoles (above). After people reassembled their faces from the sonic assault it was a fine evening of admiring art in both the made and being-made forms. Instragram helped with the capture of the guy on [...]
We all remember pretending to be our favorite 8-bit character when we were kids. Megaman, Mario, Luigi (what kind of sad kid were you?) Samus (for gamer girls), the list goes on. Some of you might remember doing this last week. We all have music from our favorite games to accompany us on this imagination [...]

Happy Monday, folks! A while back DJ Echoes wrote a concert review for Baths and Braids . Since reading that post, Baths's track Lovely Bloodflow has made a prominent appearance in numerous different playlists on my iPod. So when I heard he was coming to DC again to finish up his East Coast tour, I was more than ecstatic to see him play live. I've been to my fair share of live shows and normally know what to expect. However, this time I had no clue what I was getting myself into, despite [...]

Anamanaguchi are currently on the road with BATHS , though they are [...]
Kara Kara is Dublin-based Kieran Dold and his debut EP is simply stunning. It's all done on keyboards and using - wait for it - a GameBoy. I knew you could make music using that technique but I didn't knew the songs could be so breathtaking. 'Haunted GameBoys', for example, [Read more]

The Museum of the Moving Image looks like one large pixel. The cubic structure occupies half of a city block in Queens, New York and illuminates like a lego brick stuffed with LED lights. I walked in and picked up my ticket, which came in the form of a lenticular wristband—it changed shape and color [...]

In any given week there's always a ton of NYC-area shows spanning across multiple genres and styles, but it seems like this week's concert calendar is even more sonically random than normal. Here are the highlights as I see 'em... Early in the week, we've got Explosions in the Sky with the Antlers at the beautiful Wellmont Theatre (in Montclair, NJ). Elvis Costello - who I mentioned last week - continues to bring his "Spectacular Spinning Songbook" to the area, with a show at the [...]

As expected, the Weeknd didn't appear ( he canceled the week before ). Instead, the main attractions were Rick Ross , Death From Above 1979 , a [...]
