Retro-futurist meets actually retro-- that's pretty much what guitars are nowadays, right? Although Anamanaguchi hail from the "chiptune" scene probably best known around here for outliers/standouts like Crystal Castles (or else for Wham City 8-bit aficionados Adventure), this New York outfit throws some guitars and drums in alongside the hacked Nintendos. The title track from Anamanaguchi's upcoming self-titled debut LP, Dawn Metropolis , also shows some flair for melody in between the blips, bleeps, fuzzed-out power chords, and frantic beats. Apparently the live performances of this song may require some [...]
An update on Brother Ali's new single, Gospel Gossip and Meredith Fierke reviewed & Anya Marina performs at the Current

Chiptune slingers and Gothamites Anamanaguchi are seven heavy years into their career and this new EP, Dawn Metropolis , is only their second-ever release. That may be so, but they do, though, pack such an intense array of blips, beeps and bangs into their tracks that we have a sneaking suspicion that their name will be on the lips of a wide range of fans this year. They might not know how to spell that name, but at least they'll know it. The record drops March 3. Tracklist: 01 Blackout City [...]

[Photo by Ethan Saks] Again we use the term "new" loosely, as Anamanaguchi has been leading NYC's 8-bit power-pop charge since at least the middle of this millennium's first decade. Having recently released their debut album Power Supply on 8BITPEOPLES , the group proudly lists the original Nintendo Entertainment System as one of their primary instruments. Fresh off their performance at the Blip Festival - a fest dedicated to "archaic game and home computer hardware that is recast into the [...]

Normally Trixie brings you all the hot chiptunes jams, but since she's off being important, I figured I'd step up to plate this time. Maybe you've noticed the banner added to the top of our site about a month ago? Well that's Blip Festival , and it starts.... TONIGHT! It's international mayhem of the chiptunes variety; taking Game Boys (DMGS), Ataris, Nintendos, 8-bit emulator VSTs, Commodore 64s, Nintendo DS's (and just about anything else you can think of), our stalwart adventurers hack, slash and tweak the hardware in ways mere mortals thought impossible, creating [...]
by eliza Walking into the dark, christmas-lighted, sea monster walling, speaker blaring, rickety staired warehouse was like a scene out of a Gus Van Sant movie. A warehouse with a tiny red gate on an empty street near the Williamsburg bridge, I found myself wanting to see many more shows, or even just hang at this spot. I mean, the bartender pulled ice cube trays from the fridge behind the bar to make my drink. I felt like I was [...]

From a childhood favorite to influencing the music I listen to today, the 8-bit processor has been with me in one form or another since my 1st Grade Social Studies class. The Famicom, Atari, Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega, and groups like Crystal Castles all share something in common, that little processor that has powered favorite games like Super Mario Brothers , Tecmo Super Bowl , Contra , and ExciteBike (click those links to play). Over the years, advances in computer chip techonlogy have rendered the processor pretty much obsolete (I think). [...]

Power Supply

It's SXSW. A>Z Anamanaguchi - Power Supply ( alt link ) New York's premier 8-bit rockers Anamanaguchi , charming stuff that comes off more organic than a lot of 8-bit you hear. Aonomi - Misodisko ( alt link ) Aonomi are from Tokyo and totally nail their Gameboys into submission. Bird Peterson - Twurk Central ( alt link ) Pure danceable breaks beats and bass [...]

Aside from some uninspiring actions on the part of a certain paid undercover police officer/security guard, the kids came and ran amok at Death By Audio on Friday night. Another Famous Friends party. Another wonderfully done event, chock full of the kind of shit that the culture of me has been thoroughly enjoying (and also realizing how much we missed this shit) for the past couple of months. Kudos go out to Bradley D, Anamanaguchi, Sweatshop Labor , Purple Crush and Le Castle Vania for ripping our brains with joy. We [...]

Ok so you know the drill by now, or maybe you don't. Anyways we post songs that have been stuck in our head all day. Macklin: Billy Preston-Nothing From Nothing I have had this song stuck in my head since this Saturday when I went to see " Be Kind Rewind." It's basically the best feel good song ever, which is why it's my "Tuesdays School Days" pick. Tristan: Rick Ross - Speedin' (Remix feat. R. Kelly and Chris [...]
Here's some tracks from the other kids who are making their LA debut this weekend at THE NEW CHECK YO' PONYTAIL. It's NYC's very own 8-bit sensation ANAMANAGUCHI ! These kids take everything i lived about playing video games when i was a kid and combine it with everything i loved about going to shows when i was a teen. it's the best of both worlds and i fucking love it! Check out the tracks and video and make sure not to miss them this SAT with MEN, ACID GIRLS, MOONRATS and ABE VIGODA at THE NEW [...]

I rounded up some electropop/chiptune/disco tracks -so if you don't like that kind of thing, gtfo. Mostly throwaways but prty fun regardless. I'm pretty much easy for anything squarewaveish or chimey. I've started to notice a kind of fad with the vintage keyboard bands and mashup remixers - and its probably product of the internet and mp3 music gluttony. The airwaves are starting to get clogged up but a byproduct of this would be like Crystal Castles and I really really dig them. DFA Radio [...]
There's a growing scene of artists based primarily in NY (at least as far as the US scene is concerned) dedicated to the concept of making music using old video game hardware. Being fairly new to the scene myself, I don't claim to know much; but I have heard some really good stuff that's come out of it (you may recall this post about fellow "chip scene" artist Mark Denardo ). However, until now I have not enjoyed anything I've heard as much as I do today's track. This song was recommended [...]
Style: Lo-Fi / Chiptune "New York's Anamanaguchi finally makes their debut with the driving and dynamic Power Supply. The fully-packed release shows a range of feelings from "putting the final blast into a robot boss" to some more heartfelt tunes - all with hyper-melodic, electric powerpop flavor. It is reccomended that you sing along with the squarewaves. Please enjoy!" - Anamanaguchi /
