Time for my belated and bloated annual look back at the past year... yes, we're mere hours away from February, but I started a dangerous precedent last year when I posted my year-end review at the end of January. Last year saw a dramatic drop in my post count, less than half the posts of 2008 and my lowest total since 2006. I partially blame the lingering effect of that blogger crackdown, but another contributing factor is the new job I started around the same time in late '08. Now I'm more or less happy with one [...]

Creative force Will Wiesenfeld ([Post-foetus], Baths, Nephews) has just released a new Geotic full length for free online sportin' ten tracks that clock in at around 45mins of atmospheric aural candy. Download Hearth right here . Cover by Jude Wiesenfeld . Geotic - People Watching (Halloween Parades) and if anyone was at Sludge Mansion to catch Baths last night, Ary (Anamanaguchi) had his laptop stolen and could use all of our help getting it or the logic files back.

NES under Xray. Pretty Tight So Anamanaguchi and Starscream came last night to play a show at Oberlin and fucking killed it. I was really honored to get to open for them and really had a great time. Turned out to be more people there then I expected and Anamanaguchi seemed to have really liked my set. Hopefully I'll get to chill with them in New York when I'm there in January. And brunch with them afterward was really fun. Some really cool guys, definitely don't miss any of their shows. [...]

Anamanaguchi | Mercury Lounge | November 11, 2009 Before Deastro and Max Tundra took to the stage of Mercury Lounge the other night, local 8-bitters Anamanaguchi were on stage. The band do have their own take on the lo-fi genre, by adding traditional rock instruments over the top of their bleeps and bloops. Check out photos from their set the other night after the jump. www.anamanaguchi.com | www.8bitpeoples.com/

I just thought I'd share this song with everyone as Ratitude was released recently and Weezer have since taken the top spot on Elbo.ws this weekend. Anamanaguchi's cover of Holiday is taken from the 8-Bit Weezer album released in May by Pterodactyl Squad . The album features fourteen covers of Weezer songs by 8-Bit bands. Anamanguchi are a chiptune/8-Bit band from New York who play synth's on a hacked NES and Gameboy. Unlike most bands from the 8-Bit genre they usually write and compose their own material. Anamanaguchi's cover is definitely [...]

"heres a lil bit of ARTS yallz. i like to make trance songs as a joke, and sometimes they come out kinda serious. (gear: about %75 LSDJ and %25 lame software.)" -Ary Ha, Ary (Anamanaguchi) made this sweet lil' dance number and posted it to the web today via 8bitcollective . If you're a proud owner of 'guchi's Dawn Metropolis , Ary composed "Mermaid" which is the final tune on the record. It's rad to catch the similarities of the two pieces, but I'm really just trying to see another SWEET AMERICA show. [...]

Canada's DD/MM/YYYY were tighter than I'd ever seen them before at this year's pool party. Watch 'em up close, and for cheap ($5), at Don Pedro's tonight, where Impose Magazine is hosting Test Patterns, 8-bit vs. Canadian edition to celebrate the band's cassette release of Black Square on Impose Records. Also playing are Graffiti Monsters , whose fierce drummer, Red-Bull-induced leaps, and 8-bit jollies won't escape your memory once they make their way in; L Magazine's 8-bit [...]

DD/MM/YYYY is bringing it old school. Literally.

Anamanaguchi @ Kung Fu Necktie, Philadelphia (8/7/09) >> More photos on Flickr Believe it or not, chiptune/8-bit music has been around much longer than Crystal Castles has been ripping it off . If you've never been to a live chiptune performance before, what you might see is a guy manipulating a Game Boy (or some other device [e.g., stylophone, TRS-80, etc.]) while madly thrashing about as if there was some sort of wild techno dance party going on. [...]

We seemed to have overlooked this when it came out, but Pterodactyl Squad, a "videogame music net label" released an 8-bit Weezer tribute album last month. The compilation features Anamanaguchi, Bit Shifter, nordloef and many more covering some of Weezer's greatest. Power pop has always lent itself nicely to 8-bit music, and this is no exception. Weezer's melodies fit in perfectly with the bleeps and bloops of the genre and the rhythms sound perfectly fine fuzzed and thrashed. It's a fun listen for any Weezer fan. Download the entire thing here . Bit [...]

cred: i am 8bit "8-bit music is definitely the punk of electronic music." - Ary Warnaar, Anamanaguchi BWR TH NVSN is currently underway and to celebrate the homecoming of Luke, Ary and the 'guchi bros I've arranged a lil' mixtape for ya'll with some of my favorite 8bit covers, tunes and a special track from Anamanaguchi. I've found that over the past few years many folks raging hard at Anamanaguchi shows, myself included, haven't the slightest idea of what 8bit music is or even [...]
