Belfast's And So I Watch You From Afar released their debut full length album last year. Check out their track "The Voiceless". This instrumental will blow you away. I had a chance to ask the band a few questions before they make it to our shores. Here's the witty repartee: T.O. Snob: First off, thank you very much for taking the time to speak with us.Not a problem, thanks for speaking to us!
Now in its fifth year, the Choice Music Prize for 2010 will be announced in Vicar Street next Wednesday the 3rd of March from 7.30pm sharp. The live event runs in tandem with the judging process which takes place in a locked room nearby where 12 media guys and gals will be trying to decide the best Irish album of the year for 2009. While that is happening, the bands nominated will be playing short live sets before the announcement. Out of the 10 nominated acts the following will be performing: And So I Watch [...]

(via Claire Sloan ) Ireland is basically crushing it this year. First, Two Door Cinema Club take over my iPod and now And So I Watch You From Afar delightfully show up in my inbox. The best way to describe ASIWYFA's sound is to say that they're basically next door neighbors to Explosions In the Sky and right down the block from M83 ... If we were relating them by means of residential metaphors, that is. Anyway, you can catch these guys in Toronto, New York, a few [...]

Inevitably, as another musical year dawns, we begin to move from the favourites that kept us company the previous 364 days and speculate at which bands might fuel our fire during the next 12 months. As these scribblings are wont to do, we head home across the Atlantic for the third band in this mini-series. Northern Ireland, to be exact, to dig on Belfast boys And So I Watch You From Afar . [...]

Our finest 20 records of the year are the ones that are closest to our collective hearts from a San Francisco band's debut to a Kosmische pile-up between Tangerine Dream, Sunno))) and proggy ambient techno to the return of some French Anglophiles, to our highest charting Irish albums, a band on their 13th release, an icy Swedish enigma and a slew of Brooklyn based bands. Albums of 2009: 75-51 | 50-41 | 40-31 | 30-21 | 20-1 [...]
Photo by Rich Gilligan . Below you will find the fourth annual countdown of the top 30 Irish albums as voted by readers and commenters of this blog. There are some surprises in there to me. The number one album on the list actually won by a fair few votes. In a year where there was no clear favourite, it's interesting to see such an album top the list. A few of the albums charted quite highly considering they were only released in the last month or so. Anyway, I hope you discover [...]
The results of the poll are ready to be revealed. First up, the Irish songs of the year as voted by you. A staggering 215 different songs were voted for overall from about 150 voters in total and the resulting top 30 sees multiple appearances from some of the following: David Kitt, Villagers, And So I Watch You From Afar, Hunter-Gatherer, Patrick Kelleher and Super Extra Bonus Party. I'll post the Google Doc showing the number of votes for each song tomorrow along with the album results as well as hopefully contacting the winners of the prizes . Here [...]

Just two days after their largest headlining show to date in their hometown of Belfast, And So I Watch You From Afar return south for a special and extremely intimate gig at Dublin's Thomas House pub this Sunday night. Capacity is, well, tiny and the only way to get in is by invite. Fortunately, we have two pairs of tickets to give away - just email the title of the band's new EP, due early next year, to giveway@state.ie by 6pm tomorrow (Saturday). Please include a contact number. Related [...]

One of my bands of the year, And So I Watch You From Afar are headlining the Ulster Hall in Belfast tonight but what you may not know yet is that they are also playing a secret show in the basement of Thomas House in Dublin this Sunday. It kicks off at 7pm with The Parks also playing but capacity is limited and it's guestlist-first and then first come first served. I'm offering two names on the guestlist +1 for the gig. Mail me on freebies@nialler9.com with your name and [...]
And So I Watch You From Afar – The Letters EP Ah, sixteen minutes more melodramatic instrumental goodness. And So I Watch You From Afar have had plenty at State HQ falling over themselves to find adequate superlatives for the past year, and their latest EP is no different. Edgy, staccato, and exploring a little subtlety and a lot of thunderous noise, The Letters EP carries on where ASIWYFA’s quite brilliant debut left off, even throwing in an almost ballad-esque intro to ‘D is for Django the Bastard’ before chucking their weight into it. They’ve saved [...]

Anyone sick of lists yet? Me neither. Today sees AU Magazine release their Irish albums of the decade list in which they asked for the public's help and the results are out in the new mag now. Take a look at the top 50 after the jump where a very recent 2009 album takes the top spot. As you'd expect from a Belfast-based mag, the list is fairly Northern-centric but most of the albums deserve to be there. After the top 50 you can see my own personal top 20 Irish albums of [...]
