Ever since Speckled Bird member Chris Edwards moved to Portland , there's been a void in the folk group. However, it's a void that has now been filled. Jonathan Vassar and Speckled Bird are pleased to announce their newest member: Paul Watson , who will play cornet, classical guitar and vocal harmonies. Watson has played with many local acts, including The Broken Hips and Sparklehorse. He now plays with Lynn Wright in And the Wiremen (who are incredible if you haven't seen them perform. From [...]

Photo by Arthur Stephens Last night was triple threat in local music. First stop was Globehopper Coffee where Jonathan Vassar was playing a solo set followed by And the Wiremen . Jonathan's set was simple and full of dark, sad music (It wouldn't be a Jonathan Vassar show if it weren't). He played a few favorites from Speckled Bird and Ophelia as well as a few new songs. And if you haven't had the chance to see And the Wiremen perform, do yourself a favor [...]
I tried so hard, I really did. I searched here, I rummaged there and not even a game of virtual hide and seek could turn up much factual data relating to And The Wiremen. What I did glean is that the group's self-titled debut came out either in 2009 and 2010 and there are members from Sparklehorse and Pere Ubu larging it up inside it's eclectic grooves. Here again is a short round-up of some of the better new releases we've come across recently. Once again, they all deserve more in the way of a narrative, but time can be a hard taskmaster on occasion. First up is the rather strangely named EP's Trailer Park and their strangely compelling folk song tribute to Mario Vargas Llosa - this year's Nobel Laureate in Literature. Last night's Listening Room was a nice, relaxing evening. Both acts of the night were from outside Richmond but had many Richmond ties. Blasco , from Massachusetts, played a simple guitar and sang in both French and English. And the Wiremen , a collective of musicians from Richmond to New York City, were a wall of sound capturing the attention of everyone in the room.
