With the Fritz out on vacation this week, I thought I would do my best to fill his shoes to come up with this week's newsletter. Odds are I will not do nearly as good a job as him being witty and all, but I am willing to give it a try. Mac McCaughn's other band, Portastatic , will release a two-disc compilation of odds and sods on September 9th entitled Some Small History. [...]

This year's FFF Fest has a little bit for everyone. It all goes down November 8th and 9th at Austin's Waterloo Park. It doesn't pack the "big name" punch the ACL line up does but I feel they are really carving a niche for themselves by offering a much more diverse "indie" festival. You get two jam packed days of music for on $60, which is a great deal . We will be covering the festival and doing out "Spotlights" on all of the artists we think everyone should make time to check out. You can click on the Fun [...]
I wrote this in 2002 when And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead’s peerless ‘Source Tags & Codes’ album came out. ‘The post-rock encore is as frightening as it is revolutionary. 'Relative Ways' beams like a guiding light through a dense blanket of fog. As straightforward as a maze it bolts like a jackrabbit from a sealed box. The guitars have an elegant trippy edge, the rhythm takes the speed

According to TrailofDead.org (Trail of Dead's fansite), ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead will be headlining one of the days for this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest. Austin's third annual Fun Fun Fest will take place on the weekend of November 8-9 at Waterloo Park . Singer Conrad Keeley had this to say about this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest. "We co-headlined the Siren Festival with Death Cab for Cutie a few years ago, but other than that we haven't had many real oppurtunites to top a high-profile [...]

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - " How Near How Far " from Source Tags and Codes (2002) When this album came out, it was much-needed assurance to me that the purity and brilliance of guitar rock was alive and vigorous and not something that had flourished and died in the 1970s. While Trail of Dead have by no means sustained this triumph, Source Tags & Codes will always be considered one of the most muscular and potent albums of the last decade. [...]

A little while back I told you that whenever there is local music featured at Daytrotter , I would make sure to give you a heads up. Well, heads up! There's a new session from Peter and the Wolf (his second for Daytrotter): Peter and the Wolf - "Bike of Jonas" ...as well as a session from And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead : And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead [...]

The problem with existing in the greatest city in the world is that there's always something incredible going on somewhere, and you are so not there. I'm used to it, though, as this happens to me pretty much [...]
Watch the legendary songstress perform 'A Natural Woman' from Tuesday's broadcast. MP3: Trail Of Dead - The Porpoise Song (CK Cover)
This song reminds me why I used to love And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead dearly. Not so much of late, post ‘Source Tags & Codes’ they appear to me at least to be on a downward creative spiral. That album was a true spectacular, brimmed full of anthemic guitar epics and heroic vocal turns. An undoubted bright spot in the aftermath of ‘Source Tags & Codes’ came in the form of 2003’s ‘

Austin's finest performed: Will You Smile Again For Me? Crowning Of A Heart A Gargoyle Waiting Totally Natural Enjoy the full set here. MP3: Trail Of Dead - It Was There... (Live) [ alt link ]

So I went to see Trail of Dead last night at Bowery Ballroom. And not only do I STILL think they are one of the best live bands around, I can't still help loving almost 95% of their material. I mean Will You Smile Again? might be one of my favorite songs to see live EVER. Anyway, I was going to post about that record Worlds Apart, since it's also a great overlooked record. However, two things last night made me write about Madonna today. One, the tracks that they play off of Madonna, almost always [...]

...Trail Of Dead - Richter Scale Madness (Live) When Source Tags & Codes was making its initial splash back in 2002, I took the opportunity to see Austin's And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead every possible chance I could. One particular highlight of those shows was the band's explosive take on 'Richter Scale Madness' - the opening track to their 1998 self-titled debut. Check out a compelling version of the tune below, as performed live in their hometown at (the highly revered) Emo's. [...]
