![[SOTD] Anderson Ponders "The Discus Incident"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3429181_lg.jpg)
On probably the only sober minute of a booze-soaked getaway to the North Coast I had the pleasure of overhearing a solo violinist's rendition of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes's "Home" outside of a coffee shop on the edge of the Mendocino Headlands. A few hours later I had the added pleasure of hotboxing a sauna with him while he gave me a Tarot reading. Anders Mattson (aka Anders Ponders) is a 20-something street performer who lives on the beach and in his car near the Mendocino Headlands. Originally from Minnesota, he has been traveling [...]
*MP3: Anders Ponders - "The Discus Incident" This week's edition of New Music...
What would you get if you blended together the compositional sounds of Sufjan Stevens with modern day sing song pop folk and then poured that topping over a cake made out of Final Fantasy? (And I guess I should clarify here; this Final Fantasy cake is the live version of Owen Pallet's shows, not the quasi lame studio albums he continually puts out). Stumped? Well you won't be for long. What you get is Anders Ponders (and coincidentally one great album that I simply didn't get to listen to last year. It might have wormed its way into my best [...]
A couple of clips of a couple of great up-and-coming bands.
A great chance to catch a pair of new bands who've piqued our interest.

If you knit things with incredibly small yarn, or need a constant supply of crate paper, or have mulled wine and MPR going on in the kitchen, this is a show to appreciate you for your fabulosity. Dark Dark Dark Anders Ponders and The Chord and The Fawn Tuesday Dec. 15 9pm Kitty Cat Klub - Free
This song has been rattling around in my brain all morning, through an endless commute that involved rain, a couple of faulty subway cars, and too much wind for one umbrella. Anders Ponders - Slowest Motion Miracle. "Slowest Motion Miracle" is on the new Anders Ponders record Nodes Of Overtones, and it got me through my morning. That's Ponders on viola and just about everything else, playing up a storm while singing in a quiet voice. It's all very Sufjanian and Andrew Birdian, but it's also just a good song with an interesting arrangement and a pretty melody. Ponders -...

This edition of the Graboid is all about the unknown, as I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't heard about many of these releases (I haven't, at least). Though, there are a few notable names scattered throughout including MF Doom and Ola Podrida . There is one album that I highly recommend checking out, which is Received Pronunciation , the fourth release from Pants Yell! which also marks their debut with Slumberland Records. As always, feel free to recommend anything I may have left off! [...]

Anders Ponders "Nodes of Overtones" (Self-Released, Nov. 10th) "The Discuss Incident" Staccato sounds abound... Andrew Bird vs. Bowerbirds vs Bon Iver. "Pomegranate" The pomegranate is a beautiful fruit... A song on welcomed change. "Out of the Light" Well constructed composition with graceful violins swirling and nearing The Books territory. "Icarus" Dead Can Dance influence felt heavily on the intro... Big bass and bird whistles. "How We've Grown" Near Chiefton romp through fiddles and stomping rhymes. "A Love That Feels Like" The orchestral strings mix with [...]

Holy Viola! It's Monday Mail! What is Monday Mail? Patrick at Vitriol says: Anders Ponders is the stage name for Anders Mattson, a Minneapolis musician who is very insistent about his commonly mispronounced name. Similar to Andrew Bird and Final Fantasy, Anders writes songs on viola (not violin) with the aid of a loop pedal and embellished by sequencers, samples, guitar, and vocals. Whimsical lyrics, dream like melodies, and driving percussion express a desire to return to innocence and magic. [...]

Today I had the pleasure of being introduced to the music of Anders Ponders ; Well I guess introduced is the wrong word, as I am a fan of mpls band Bouncer Fighter , but his solo work is a whole other beast. Armed with a viola and a loop pedal, Anders spins a web of complex musical layers topped with raw but simple vocals. Unable to escape the obvious comparison to Andrew Bird, Anders Ponders fills in the gaps with a myriad of other instruments (including sequencers, samples, and guitars) to produce a unique [...]
