A week ago, Sound Salvation Army's Pat bemoaned the, well, Dylan -ness of Dylan . That ultimately punk rock way that Dylan has always managed to command respect and contempt at the same time from the same people. I didn't see the current tour, so I don't know. I saw him ten years ago at what was then called the Agridome, and, well, it was pretty damn cool. It was Dylan, knocking out hot guitar and plowing through a bunch of songs that half the world knows at least some of the words to. This tour saw Dylan [...]

Toronto and I have a real love/hate relationship. Having lived in or near this city almost my entire life, with my most recent years spent in Toronto's east end, I can tell you first hand that she's far from a perfect beast. Turns out neither am I, so we usually get along just fine. This whole train of thought got started after a copy of This Beautiful City , the soundtrack to Ed Gass-Donnelly 's film of the same name , made its way to my stereo. I haven't seen the film, but a synopsis [...]

andre ethier - untitled mp3: andre ethier - on lies the andre ethier who wrote "on lies" and the andre ethier who is responsible for the untitled painting shown above are the same person. pretty amazing, right? what's almost as amazing is it took me 10-20 minutes of inquiry to confirm that the musical and visual artists were indeed the same person. there are plenty of people talking about andre as a musician and a number of people talking about andre as a painter too... [...]

I recommend closing your eyes for these six minutes. Andre Ethier - Pride of Egypt I wonder if Dodgers' Andre Ethier likes this song.

The Polaris Music Prize is an award acknowledging the best Canadian album released in the past year with regards to artistic merit. I was very pleased to see songwriter/performer/producer Sandro Perri nominated for his album, Tiny Mirrors, when the prize's long list was recently announced. Funnily enough, I've been mesmerized over the past week with a song done by Perri and fellow Canadian Andre Ethier during a live in-studio session for CBC last year... a song called "Circles", which can be found on a record released by Perri under [...]

Image courtesy flickr user forklift The New Pornographers put on one of the worst concerts of recent memory at the Bowery Ballroom last August. It was so unbearable that writing a review would have been like rubbing alcohol on an open wound. A.C. Newman was acting like a real prick in-between songs, talking for longer than the band played, often jealously spitting snide jokes about bands like Spoon who had their album at low-mid class retailers like Target. Neko [...]

Destroyer, with Andre Ethier Mercy Lounge, Nashville, TN Tuesday, April 29, 2008 Shortly after I bought my first New Pornographers CD, my stepsister turned me on to Destroyer , Dan Bejar's other band. I fell hard for the whole Bob Dylan does glam rock vibe of Streethawk: A Seduction , so I was pretty jazzed a couple of years ago when the Pornographers came to town with Destroyer as the opening act. But as great as that concert was, I found Destroyer's set to [...]
Andre Ethier is the most badass singer-songwriter you've never heard of. The Toronto musician (not to be confused with the LA Dodgers ballplayer of the same name*) used to front the grievously underrated garage-soul-folk-ruckus band the Deadly Snakes , which called it quits after releasing the Polaris-nominated album Porcella in 2006. Ethier continued on, and tonight at the Record Bar, he opens for lyrical genius Dan Bejar, aka Destroyer . These two nuggets are off Andre's 2006 album Secondathallam (Paper Bag Records). [...]

Self labeled as "European Blues", Canadian band Destroyer is coming through the IA area Thursday and Friday supporting their new album Trouble In Dreams . Another Canadian, Andre Ethier (no, not the LA Dodger) is joining them. 4/24: Philly @ North Star Bar 4/25: DC @ Black Cat Destroyer - Foam Hands Andre Ethier - Pride of Egypt

Ten days in, 2008 is looking to be the most expensive year ever. Here in Vancouver, going to work and coming home has gone up by at least 50 cents a day . If you want to go to Surrey--or more likely, if you want to leave Surrey, it'll cost you a whopping five dollars. Unless you wait until dark--and who wants to be in Surrey after dark?--then you can escape for a mere $2.50. Even the pizza on Hastings has gone up in the New Year. What once simultaneously filled and rotted your gut for nothing [...]
Andre Ethier's August release Secondathallam didn't casue much of a raukus when it came out this past August on Paper Bag Records . That has more to do with the volume of great music being released then the quality of this release. I only discovered it in the midst of preparing posts for this weeks Canadian feature. It's not like Andre is some random singer songwriter toiling away in obscurity either. He's a member of the defunct Canadian band The Deadly Snakes. On "In The Prim" Andre lists [...]
