This capacity crowd are here to see Andrew Bird but a lot of them have come into the venue early to see Martin Dosh, here just billed as Dosh, who is also known as Bird's drummer. He plays a half hour solo set using his drum kit, multiple keyboards and marimba, all which he uses to make his own live loops. His set begins in quite an ambient mood, but it builds into a full band sound and hints at modern American composers and post rock jazz like Tortoise. It's always tricky for an instrumental support to click [...]
The Men Words : Drake Lelane What's the saying? "March enters like a lion and leaves like a lamb?" Between the sophomore releases from both The Men and Mike Wexler , we've certainly achieved the first part of that equation. Other artists with new releases this week include Andrew Bird, Bruce Springsteen, The Magnetic Fields, Bowerbirds, Time Fite, White Rabbits, Yellow Ostrich, Pond (no, not that one), Xiu Xiu, Nite Jewel, Kaiser Chiefs, Miniature Birds and Said the Whale [...]

Tweet vaso link Tympanogram grade: A Break It Yourself 's opening moments leave the listener feeling like they might be jumping into something that has already begun. Like maybe something was missed. I guess if it is your first time hearing Andrew Bird, then you really have missed something. If that is the case then you might be unaware of Bird's mastery across multiple instruments (both of-man and by-man), but I won't bother delving into that [...]

Andrew Bird's new Break It Yourself single sounds pretty great in studio form , but this intimate glimpse at Bird and friends performing the track for an in-studio live take goes further to expose the tune's rousing spirit. Filmed in and round Bird's Western Illinois barn amid LP recording sessions, the video below is part of a 30-minute performance film called Here's What Happened , available to watch for free today via iTunes . Given that Break It Yourself feels like a relatively understated set - a grower, if you will - I can't [...]

After hearing those beautiful songs from his breakthrough album Andrew Bird and the Mysterious Production of Eggs in Residence Inn commercials, I though it might be over for the Chicago-born violinist. He made numerous TV and NPR appearance for Armchair Apocrypha and I would assume this is when a lot of people heard him for the first time. But the sound wasn't the same. Talented, but not playful. Strings, but no heart. Then I didn't even bat an eye when he released Noble Beast. So it was with a sigh that I pressed play [...]
Tweet vaso link After seeing Andrew Bird perform for the first time this past fall, I left disappointed. Solo, Bird is far more apt to wander and experiment; I heard after that he's more impressive when he's playing with a band, so I will give him a second chance if/when I see him coming to town with a cast of other musicians. Despite my disappointment in the show, there was one song that stuck in my head that I couldn't shake; as it turns [...]

D.L. Anderson It's unlikely bird videos will ever achieve the same degree of online adoration as, say, cat videos, but when said clips come courtesy of artists who push the boundaries of what can be called folk music the way that North Carolina's Bowerbirds and Chicago's Andrew Bird do, a little more attention should be paid. Both artists released their new albums this week - The Clearing and Break It Yourself , respectively - and both have marked the occasion with the [...]

Andrew Bird picked up the violin at age four and has added a cadre of instruments along the way. The multi-talented artist now calls Venice, California home...
He whistled his way through The Muppets , soundtracked the film Norman , and has now selfishly recorded his own new effort Break It Yourself on a farm in Western Illinois. Welcome to the wonderful world of Andrew Bird, who gives PopMatters a guided tour through it. Ever since making his commercial debut in 1996, Andrew Bird has been a musical pioneer, bringing fans, peers and collaborators along for a serendipitous journey. Personifying the creativity and ambition of the DIY renaissance in indie music, the classically trained musician has drawn acclaim for musical virtuosity going [...]

It's fairly easy to sum up Andrew Bird: whistling, violin plucking, a voice of rich, melted honey and a jaw-line that can cut through steel. His work is very easy to characterize and one of subtle progression. It's not that Bird doesn't move forward with his work, it's just that he sets a high bar and maintains that higher standard. Break It Yourself is just another expedition of Bird's level of success. All of Bird's works thus far are well-written, well-composed albums that don't necessarily deserve a standing ovation but a nod of approval, [...]
Can't get enough of Andrew Bird's latest, Break It Yourself. A solid bounce-back from 20092s good-but-sorta-underwhelming Noble Beast. Pick it up if you haven't already.
