(Peaking Mandala, 2011) Andrew Douglas Rothbard's hyper-collagist, über-stylized psychedelia is like a chocolate fountain, constantly brimming over with candy-sweet richness. On his latest, Frequenseqer , It's almost too much, carrying the threat of short-wiring the listener's brain. But that's part of the deranged beauty of it: an all-cylinders assault constantly teetering on the point of collapse (yet always managing to stay right-side up). Containing 23 tracks, Rothbard's most recent outing is a gorgeous, expansive mind-tangle, flush with swirling electronics, beat-mashing intricacies and a giant-sized, glitched-out imagination. A very worthy successor to [...]

Andrew Douglas Rothbard Exodusarabesque (Peaking Mandala, 2009) This blurb writing thing is already getting belabored. I'm sorry. I think that after this is all said and done I am going to feel as exhausted as I assume Andrew Douglas Rothbard was after finishing this album. So, Mr. Rothbard: Caribou + Prefuse 73 + possibly even more ideas than those two artists imply. Exodusarabesque just drips of creativity blooming all over the place. A really great, sorely under-recognized album from this year (and one of the [...]

'Sup my twine suckas? In light of some hefty essays and finals that I will be (and am) engulfed in for the next couple weeks, I think it is safe to say that I won't be seeking out any new music in 2009 before it comes to a close. Fortunately, I have already listened to pretty much everything that has been released this year (except for most of it) so I think I am pretty well ready to get this over with. Also, no blurbs. Everything on here (with the exception of one album) has been reviewed on Forest Gospel [...]

Andrew Douglas Rothbard - Wisely Wasted Holy shit I have been listening to "Wisely Wasted" constantly for the entire week. It's fucking gorgeous . It's like if Citay made an IDM record. Just thick, lush, electronic psych that wraps it's warm bear paws around me and I just totally lose myself in it. The part around 3:30 where it stutters gets me every fucking time. I love this song so much. It's on Rothbard's [...]

Andrew Douglas Rothbard Exodusarabesque (2009, Peaking Mandala) RIYL = Kemialliset Ystavat, Kurt Weisman, The Kallikak Family, Prefuse 73 Exodusarabesque is an exercise in bewilderment. Much like the album's title, the music Andrew Douglas Rothbard creates is the result of a surgery of different parts. And, similar to attempts at pronouncing Exodusarabesque , describing this music is an exercise in futility. Believe me, this being my 7th attempt at tossing words at the album, I am well aware of the failings of English (at least my grasp of [...]

I'm working on an edit that I think is turning out pretty good but I am sloooowww at it so sorry for the slowdown in posts lately. (Also: summer doldrums.) Here's a quick blast of some new stuff I'm liking. Andrew Douglas Rothbard, Abandoned Meander (Peaking Mandala 2007) West Coast psych, pastoral edition. Andrew Douglas Rothbard - "Dardevle" [...]

Once again, I've been bombarded with emails from various promo people working with bands all over the place. So, I'll share some of the stuff that might be of interest. By the way, Greg Hester was amazing last night. He did a little cover of "Elenor Rigby," which he told me afterwards was for me!! Yay! That's probably one of my most favorite Beatles songs because of the pronounced implementation of the strings. Greg has a cellist on stage with him, and man, it was so bad ass. He'll be [...]

The lads won Best Live Performance, Best Irish Album, Most Downloaded Irish song, and Best Irish Band - beating off competition from The Divine Comedy, Humanzi and The Frames. Justin Timberlake was named "Best International Male" and Lily Allen was named "Best International Female". Scissor Sisters scooped the award for "
