The track I decided to post today for Sample Sundays is from the 2006 88-Keys album Adam's Case Files called Wasting My Minutes but most likely recognize it from from Kid Cudi's mixtapes Stoner Charm and Space Odyssey which I personally am a huge fan of. You don't really need to know much about music to figure this one out though, the track sampled here is 19782s #5 hit on the UK charts called Never Let Her Slip Away by Andrew Gold. The sample wasn't manipulated much aside from the [...]
From the 2006 Buffalo Springfield tribute album Five Way Street , here's a pretty damned impressive live version of "Bluebird," with Andrew doing business as Byrds of a Feather. Because Gold was a member of the Peter Asher/Linda Ronstandt L.A. soft-rock Mafia in the 70s, a lot of critics with a punk and post-punk axe to grind have tended to sell his artistic contributions short; frankly, I may have done it myself from time to time. But the [...]
OK, Thanksgiving can begin. I have had my traditional Thanksgiving Day listen to Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant. You may remember last year's post . I'll try not to repeat myself this year. You know, it's funny; I can read something I wrote a year ago and not even recognize it. It's like someone else wrote it. I mean, I recognize the style and the stories, but I have no recollection of having written it. Probably senility on the way right? Song 2 (no, not Blur's overplayed ditty) on this day is fitting. One of my all [...]

Bea Arthur is not a meme, OK. I want to take a serious moment to appreciate all that Dorothy and The Golden Girls have given us, while also examining what role, if any, these Miami post-panthers have had on some of the music you appreciate today. Sure, she taught us crucial pre-Degrassi lessons about teen pregnancy, infidelity, and accepting cross-dressing siblings. But what does Bea have to do with beats? We asked a few of our favorite musicians that very question. How has Bea Arthur and/or the GGs in general influenced your musical career? Thomas [...]
In Memoriam – June 2011
One of the true greats passed away this month: Clarence Clemons, a legend to every Springsteen fan. There are many things which made the E Street Band's sound so unique, but the key ingredients, in my view, were Roy Bittan's keyboards and Clemons' sax. It is on Clemons' shoulder on which Springseen leans on the Born To Run cover, literally and symbolically (and imagine the title track without that orgasmic saxophone build-up). The featured E Street Band song, here in the live version from the 1975 Hammersmith Odeon concert, tells the story of how the E Street Band came together. [...]

Songwriterobit: Andrew Gold
Andrew Gold, musician and songwriter, has died . Born to a musical family - his mother's voice was the one appearing to come out of Audrey Hepburn's mouth in My Fair Lady - which may have helped calm his parents when Linda Rondstadt turned up at his High School and shortly after invited the young Andrew to join her backing band. From The Stone Poneys, Gold built a career which would see him appear on recordings by Loudon Wainwright III, Carly Simon and Cher. He also had two hits in his own right - Thank [...]

Andrew Gold: Possibly Still Not Dead
So apparently there may be a whole Mark Twain-ish "The rumors of my death have been greatly exagerrated" kind of deal going on for Linda Ronstadt guitarist Andrew Gold . Which is to say all sorts of bloggers have been posting obits for the guy, even though there's no mention of his passing over at his official website and I can't find any definitive news at more traditional outlets like the NY Times. Hopefully the estimable craftsman is still with us; I'll keep you posted as this shakes out. [...]
