![A Very Kelpy Christmas @ Raw Sugar Cafe [December 21, 2011]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3946434_lg.jpg)
A few brave souls (myself included) attended Kelp Records ' A Very Kelpy Christmas at Raw Sugar Cafe . It couldn't come at a worst time because of the freezing rain. At least people did come out for this. Also some people bought in canned foods in donating to the Food Bank. For those who was at the event. We were entertained by Andrew Vincent , Jon Bartlett and Male Nurse with classic Christmas songs. [...]
![Raw Sugar Cafe's 3rd Anniversary Party [November 11, 2011]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3857486_lg.jpg)
Three years and still going strong for Ottawa's Raw Sugar Cafe . So with that there was a big celebration and blog launch filled with people, food, drinks and of course live music on November 11, 2011. (aka 11/11/11) Ottawa's Male Nurse did a DJ set for those wanting to dance at the party. Started out the show was Ottawa's Andrew Vincent . His set was a mix of rock, folk, pop and hip-hop. He had some [...]

Stories told, songs sung. It's simple this history of ours. Tales of murder, pain, love and loss are written daily and forgotten instantly, but the best are passed from generation to generation like currency, land or genes. In a time where the public is more consumed by those that find and hoard to fuel their own greed or sickness, folklorist Henry Svec - last heard around here under the anonymity of The CFL Sessions - spends his time unearthing stories and documenting melodies for the community. Folk Songs of Canada Now [...]

It was a nice Wednesday August 3, 2011 evening at the Raw Sugar Cafe . Went to see a solo performances of: Octoberman Language-Arts I finally got to Language-Arts live. This time it was just Kristen going solo. Her music was really great with the indie art pop music. Marc of [...]
![Kelp 17: The Flaps, Camp Radio and Andrew Vincent & The Pirates [Photos + Video]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3427126_lg.jpg)
The last night of Kelp 17 took place at the Dom Polski on May 7, 2011. It was fun night to close off the celebration. It was night for one band to reunite for the special occasion. With acts playing live were: Andrew Vincent & The Pirates The Flaps Camp Radio [...]

Technically a new EP, this collection of tracks from herohill's favorite half-marathon running musician was recorded at The House of Miracles over the last four years and finds Andrew Vincent and some of his closest friends simply having fun. With help from Jon Bartlett, Jim Bryson, Jenny "Omnichord" Mitchell, Andy Parks and Shayne Cox, AV has ripped off 6 pop nuggets that charm charm as much as they rock. If history repeats itself, Vincent's work will remain a treat for his fans and largely ignored by the masses; the straight [...]
![Andrew Vincent – Keep It That Way [EP Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3332888_lg.jpg)
I feel like such a newb when it comes to Andrew Vincent (aka AV). First time seeing him live was in 2009 at Pop Montreal. Wasn't until 2010 I really appreciated and attended his live shows. I would have liked to call him "Ottawa's best kep secret" until he moved to Toronto. Finally on April 5th he will drop a new EP called Keep It That Way. It is six tracks of great indie rock tunes. With help from Jim Bryson , [...]

Finally Andrew Vincent dropped the EP on December 14th simply called Diane/D.I.A.N.E. Why I am excited about this? D.I.A.N.E. was first played at Kelp 16 showcase in the Mayfair Theatre and he wowed the audience with his rap/hip-hop skills. Andrew is very daring doing the song on wooing a girl named Diane, all about things Canadiana and even about Ottawa. With a indie rock style, flavoured with rap/hip-hop. He got alot of help on the track from Shayne Cox on drums, Jim Bryson & Jon [...]

Toronto - I've noticed people texting at concerts before, but never before have I seen a performer texting onstage. Well, there's a first time for everything, and the Jim Bryson show at The Horseshoe was that time. Granted, this happened while the band was still setting up, but I still found it a bit weird to see guitarist/trumpeter/keyboard player Rusty Matyas texting while his bandmates plugged in their gear. That wasn't even the oddest use of technology I saw onstage - opener Andrew Vincent started off his set by singing along to a prerecorded backing track for [...]

Forgot to post this after OCFF night on October 15th . This is the second year Kelp Records has done this during OCFF at Raw Sugar Cafe ( First year was called YOWzas! ). I like to call it the day after recovery. Anyways it was a great sunny afternoon of music. Playing were: Tanya Davis Jim Bryson [...]

Bathtub full of Heiny! This year I went and attended OCFF . It was mostly for October 15th since I had to be at another show on Oct 16th. This was my second year attending this. Its always enjoyable and fun to see alot of musicians play under one big hotel. This year they used the Penthouses for the public showcases. What I like about OCFF is you get to see some of the musician and bands you know. Its kind of an industry thing [...]

Decided to make a separate entry from Day 1 of Bluesfest . Since there were alot of photos I have taken and needed to organize them well. For those that didn't want to check out Iron Maiden and wanted something less heavy. This was one show I decided to check out. This one was the Kelp Records Revue showcase featuring: Andrew Vincent Chris Page [...]
Here is part 2 of who I or you should check out at NXNE in Toronto. So this will be Thursday night's event. It is going to be busy insane Thursday at NXNE. A hard decision to choose on who to see badly. Let's check out who will be playing. Found out that from Thursday to Sunday there is going to be a " Live in Bellwoods " picnic series at Trinity Bellwoods Park. It is present by The Musebox and Humble Empire. [...]

May 15th was the second night of Kelp 16 at the Mayfair Theatre. Playing there was Leif Vollebekk , Andrew Vincent and Bill Fox . Another night of great music at the Mayfair Theatre . Saturday is going to be the last night of the Kelp 16 festivities. Leif Vollebekk started the show. As you know as always, he is covered alot in this site. He was amazing live everytime. He didn't have his backing band but Leif playing at the Mayfair [...]

Kelp Records is 16 years old. If only Think About Life was on Kelp, then they would be singing "Sweet Sixteen" for them. For those out of the loop. Kelp Records is a Ottawa based music label and its home to various artist like Jim Bryson , Andrew Vincent , Chris Page , The Acorn (who still calls Kelp home). Its becoming an annual tradition celebrating the label's achievement and to have fun with the music. This the second year now that the shows will be taking [...]

Douglas Wilkinson Okay, so I spent (too) much of yesterday in planes and airports and places, in general, not conducive to blogging so I am essentially taking today (or took last night) off to get my head together a bit, and am going to just toss this up for now. As announced last week , I'm proudly co-presenting the Toronto stop of the Kelp 16 anniversary tour, marking the fact that the Ottawa-based label is now old enough to drive. To help celebrate, we're having Cleveland cult hero singer-songwriter Bill Fox [...]

Last.fm So apparently there's this guy - based in Ohio but sings with an affected British accent, played in a band with his brother for a while, has a habit of writing amazing pop songs and recording them onto 4-track cassette and is worshipped by those in the know. I'm talking, of course, about Bill Fox . Why, who were you thinking of? I actually can't pretend to be one of those aforementioned "in the know", however. Prior to a few weeks ago, the first I'd heard of Bill Fox was via [...]

February 5th was a wonderful intimate and packful evening at Raw Sugar Cafe . Amazing to see two great talented musicians play at the lovely and cozy coffeehouse. It was so crazy at Raw Sugar that the owner decided to move all the tables out and make enough room. From my guess there was about 50-60 people that attended this show. Starting off the set was Rolf Klausener doing a solo set. got people to sit on the floor, which felt like a campfire [...]

I am writing this week's post from a dining room in Ealing, where I have come to visit my parents, and also to pretend to be a proper record label for a couple of days - courting publishers and getting European releases and tours sorted out and that sort of thing. It's kind of fun, and sort of weird in a sense. It's also strange explaining to my folks that this is actually what I do in my spare time, too. Anyway, due to the incomparable glories of the internet age that should be no impediment to me [...]
