I am writing this week's post from a dining room in Ealing, where I have come to visit my parents, and also to pretend to be a proper record label for a couple of days - courting publishers and getting European releases and tours sorted out and that sort of thing. It's kind of fun, and sort of weird in a sense. It's also strange explaining to my folks that this is actually what I do in my spare time, too. Anyway, due to the incomparable glories of the internet age that should be no impediment to me [...]

Jay Reatard @ Music Hall of Williamsburg ( more by Kyle Dean Reinford ) Matador Records writes, "We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we've ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We're honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly." NY Times confirms with a quote from Goner Records : "It is [...]

Recidivism. A great, dark theme for a great, dark song. It starts with that spare twang-y chord, like it's an outlaw country murder ballad. And it is, in its way. The song finds its narrator at a point of despair so low that bottoming out seems like redemption. Maybe this is what's happened to (the hopefully fictional) Gary Hache in the decade since Andrew Vincent first sang about him. Ten years younger, getting loaded and mouthing off to cops sounds like a lot of fun. But sometimes bad boys grow into sad men , and [...]

If you're anything like me, you read blog after blog after blog with lists that seem to mirror each other just a little bit too much. And then you ask yourself "Why?" Why do bloggers come up with these lists? Why are so many of them so much alike? Answer: I have no idea - but I'm going to do one anyways. This year wasn't exactly a stellar year, in my opinion, but there were some really good albums that came out that deserve noting again. Maybe they slipped under the radar with all the hype [...]

Andrew Vincent DOWNLOAD : Andrew Vincent - "Going Out Tonight" (mp3) It's been a big weekend for Canadians in NYC ( Bahamas, Gentleman Reg, Hidden Cameras, and Amy Millan all played shows), but one act who may have flown under your radar is Toronto's Andrew Vincent . In 2009, Andrew put out a record called Rotten Pear which got my attention, it's a bit of a hybrid affair shifting between acoustic folk (with toy accordion) and electrified rock with a bit [...]

After a few listens of Rotten Pear , you realize that Andrew Vincent should have named his latest record Rotten Pair if wanted to be more accurate, but it might have made the subtle darkness and depression he hides in the tracks too obvious to the casual listener. After hunkering down in his new TO home and stripping out any superfluous sound (not to mention his backing band) Vincent found a sound that suits his style perfectly. On the surface, Rotten Pear is charming, but it's not until you bite into the core that you [...]
He used to from Ottawa, and now he's from Toronto. Ontario's Andrew Vincent has finally got a new record coming out. Rotten Pear will be released on Kelp Records on or around the US election day , coincidentally one of my brothers' birthday. But which brother? IT'S A MYSTERY . mp3: " Going Out Tonight " by Andrew Vincent

It's either a really long weekend or not a long weekend at all. mp3: " Canadian Dreamz " by Andrew Vincent mp3: " Degrassi Jr. High Theme " by Andrew Vincent

When I was a kid, it was easy to make fun of Deadheads. Since I was sure I was a punk (I'm pretty sure now that I wasn't), and I had seen Sid & Nancy (several times), I recognized hippies as my natural enemies. I'm not sure whether the fact that my parents were, or had been, hippies added or took away from this belief. And who was a more archetypal hippy than a Deadhead? What really made it easy to make fun of Deadheads, though, was that I didn't know any. They were just abstract scapegoats that [...]

Jim Bryson needs a bigger hat to fit that bloated head of his. This latter-half-of-the-week in Ottawa is highlighted by local Jim Bryson 's 2 night stand at the Black Sheep Inn. He's just been voted in by the ever-knowledgeable readers of the Xpress as this city's best folk-type guy ; and while dial613 was really hoping it wouldn't go to Mr. Bryson's head, it appears as though <a href=" http://www.brysonforgovernor.c om/ ">it already has . So go see him on either Saturday (with the nationally broadcasted for 30 seconds at a time [...]
