At last. Someone's suggesting that maybe The Rolling Stones glory days are behind them by quite a distance: “I think there’s a point when you’ve got to say, ‘Enough’s enough’. I just think they’re old, they’re old f*rts. I just think they ain’t rock ’n’ roll any more." It's a good point - although arguably they might very well be rock and roll, and it's just rock that has got old and slow and tired. Tell us, Gordon, who is this young buck calling for the old guard to roll over and let the [...]

For our first Fantastic Foursome in more than a month we're featuring a memorable song from a mostly forgettable movie, The Sandpiper , a 1965 tearjerker that starred Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor - one of eleven they made together. But even if the movie wasn't one for the ages, "The Shadow Of Your Smile" not only won an Oscar but also picked up a Grammy as Song of the Year. Written by Johnny Mandel and Paul Francis Webster, it soon became a hit record for Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, and several others. It also became a [...]
How cool is it to see a metal band you love being featured in an ad for something like Dr. Pepper? Well, now Every Time I Die are that cool. Outside the marketing for Dr. Pepper, it's really cool to see a touring musician like Williams tell his determined story to a super huge audience ...
Hey, it's no Miracle Whip ad with Don Dokken, but then what is, y'know?
There are as many Christmas music traditions as there are stockings hung with with care. For some, the process of awaiting ole St. Nick requires a classic soundtrack, filled with old favorites. For others, something newer makes sense. Our lists are varied enough to accommodate both impulses. So, yeah, we have Nat King Cole, Vince Guaraldi, Darlene Love, Burl Ives, [...]
Time for another of our 'fantastic foursome' posts. Today's choice is perfectly suited to what I see when I look out my window. Although "Autumn Leaves" has become a familiar standard, you might be surprised to learn that it started life as a French song titled "Les feuilles mortes" ("The Dead Leaves"), and was introduced by French star Yves Montand in the 1946 film, Les Portes de la Nuit . A year or two later, Johnny Mercer wrote some English lyrics and it became a popular standard for countless artists. Roger Williams' 1955 [...]

From my Italian pressing of Are You in There ? from the 1976 King Kong , and sung by Andy Williams. The flip--also featuring the late, great Andy--is a disco version. I guess this was a love song between, um, Kong and Jessica Lange? I don't remember much about the movie, except that it was awful. The John Barry score, however, is nice, as most John Barry scores tend to be. To the tracks: Andy Williams Meets King Kong Italian pressing. Arranged and Directed [...]

Los Angeles Times (MCT) -- Depending on your age and race, Andy Williams' 1961 rendition of "Moon River" was either a transcendent embodiment of timeless beauty, or one of the more conservative, white-bread recordings of its time. Either your Christmas sparkled brighter because of his annual TV special, or it ruined an otherwise relaxing night. You loved or hated his taste in sweaters. The crooner and show host - who died on Tuesday at the age of 84 - embodied...

Not the album being discussed here today, but no other album cover would be fitting to pay tribute to Andy Williams (1927-2012). Andy Williams (1963) The English Beat (1980) Today's Cover Friday is serving double duty, as both a cool cover (of course!) and as a tribute to Andy Williams, who died this past Tuesday at the age of 84. Williams was always a personal favorite of mine when it came to the "crooners," primarily because he was responsible for some of [...]
We watched Andy Williams every week, and we loved his Christmas show, despite the ugly sweaters. Andy Williams died Tuesday night at age 84 at his home in Branson, Mo. Here is a complete obituary. I had forgotten how amazing his career was: Boston Herald. [...]

As you'd expect, there's a lot of love online for Andy Williams today. Edward Eveld in the Kanasa City Star visits his home of Branson, Missouri : Raeanne Presley, Branson mayor and a member of the family that owns Presleys’ Country Jubilee, said Wednesday was a sad day for the city, which lost both a legendary entertainer and a staunch Branson supporter. [...] “Around town he always had a wonderful smile that looked like he knew a little bit of a secret,” Presley said. “He was the snappiest dresser in town, always wearing some [...]

Although I don't go out of my way to scan the daily obituaries, you might have noticed that I occasionally mark the passing of a performer by reposting an earlier article I've written about them. But some of the biggest stars have never been featured on the GMC, because - as I've said before - I enjoy exploring the stories of the lesser-known performers. That being the case, I don't have anything to repost for Andy Williams, who died Tuesday at his home in Branson, Missouri. But there are plenty of articles available online if you [...]
I heard that Andy Williams died today. Lots of fond memories of watching his variety TV Show in the 1960s. The man had a great voice. Here was my favorite.... When I was in Junior High school, we sang the hell out of that song. Andy's show featured a lot of great music. Here is a great clip of the Jackson 5 on the show in 1970. Even at this age you could tell that young Michael was destined for bigger things. Enjoy..... [...]

"Moon River" was written by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer, and Audrey Hepburn introduced it in the 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," but it was Mr. Williams who made the song indisputably his own when he sang it at the 1962 Academy Awards ceremony and titled a subsequent album after it. When he built a theater in Branson, he named it the Andy Williams Moon River Theater. "Moon River" became the theme song for his musical-variety television series "The Andy Williams Show," which, along with his family-oriented Christmas TV specials, made him a household name. [...]
