I hope everyone had a safe and fun holiday weekend. We obviously took a couple of days off to do a bunch of grilling and beer drinking. Today, however, we're back to the proverbial grind. This week I'm going to skip the New Releases post I usually do on Mondays, and just tell you to buy the Grizzly Bear album – even if you've found it somewhere else for free – and the Phoenix album, which sees its official release today as well. (If you were paying attention, however, you could [...]
Something for you to watch while I get my act together.Mea culpa.***

Submitting to my irrational dislike for odd numbers, I'm only going to post one song for this week's chapter of my 1000 Minutes Project . Rest assured, however, I'm kicking myself for not having posted it earlier on – it's just that good. I'll even throw in an alternate version of it, but that version isn't part of the project. 30. Jeff Buckley – Last Goodbye (mp3) from Grace (4:35) [Time Remaining: 824:32] The beginning of the song is fairly innocuous; the guitar starts, then the rest [...]

I'm not feeling particularly verbose this morning, so we'll get right into the next installment of my 1000 Minutes Project . 28. Tricky – Christiansands (mp3) from Pre-Millennium Tension (3:54) [Time Remaining: 833:08] While I've heard other songs by Tricky , I've never been as drawn to them as I was to this particular one. Never elevating his voice to more than a guttural growl, Tricky's unique sprechgesang is at its most muscular here, complimenting the dark nature of the track. And [...]

After buying Ornette Coleman's classic album The Shape of Jazz to Come for only 99 cents on Amazon this past weekend, and subsequently listening to it, I was in a jazz kind of mood. I'm not a jazz aficionado by any stretch, but I took the time to listen to what I do own – Miles Davis ' Kind of Blue , and John Coltrane's A Love Supreme . To me, jazz is a form best digested in complete [...]

SomaCow Media is proud to present ComaSow brought to you by Dusty Rhodes and the River Band . (note, to find them click on their name. If you google them and go to the Side One Dummy page, my Avast finds a virus there). We have received a couple albums from Dusty Rhodes and have thought they were ok but Geoff and I decided to give their new album, Palace and Stage , a new try with somewhat open minds. Our first song was "Palace [...]

Here's the link to our post over at Breakthru Radio for today. Read up: Breakthru Radio Post: Tuesday And here's my sunshine inspired post for my 1000 Minutes project . If you're in Rochester, I'll have you know I wrote this on Monday, when it was much more apropos. 21. The Push Stars – Everything Shines (mp3) from After the Party [...]
2009Buy6.5/10Upon hearing Exploring Unknown Territory, the listener is immediately drawn out of their run or their bed or their sofa and into their surrounding environment: the cliched wind feathering the leaves, the sterile flouresence of an overhead bulb, the clock's insistent reminder that their chemistry lecture lies a mere forty minutes away. Too often, Lunar Node immerses one so deeply that

Today's installment of my 1000 Minutes Project has me looking back over what I've already posted, and feeling a little bit surprised that I've not even knocked out a tenth of my allotted time. In addition to my surprise, I'm proud we've made it to ten weeks of doing this. The project has spawned at least one fan that we know of , and maybe it's made you think a bit about the importance of the music in your life. Or maybe not. I'm feeling sentimental today. Let's get after the tunes. [...]
I'm going to try and get back into a regular posting schedule, things have just been a bit hectic lately.Until then, here's some fun dubstep! First is a trippy video for Bassnectar's version of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", followed by a few other nice tracks.Enjoy.***Lullabyte - MimosaS p a c e b a s s - Boxcutter
We are now one week away from the official release of Manchester Orchestra's next LP, Mean Everything To Nothing, and I couldn't be more excited. The album leaked a few weeks ago, so I've had some time with it - and it shows a lot of promise. Here's a couple tracks to tide you over for a week. Happy Listening!***Shake It Out - Manchester OrchestraPride - Manchester OrchestraI Can Feel A Hot One -

While I haven't gotten through the entire album yet, the new Silversun Pickups album is excellent so far. A lot more focused than their debut, less ethereal and less swirly/shoegaze guitar. That may be terrible for some of their fans, but I think it works for them. (NOTE: because I haven't listened to it enough, I reserve the right to completely reverse or change my opinion without good explanation.) Here is the next installment of my 1000 Minutes project . 17. The Stills - Changes Are No Good (mp3) (3:42) from [...]

We have a perfectly valid reason for not posting yesterday – it was Opening Day, and we were at a bar . The Mets won their opener, which is not a real indicator of anything in the larger theme of the 2009 baseball season, but it was nice to see the bullpen lock it down for Johan. If you're interested in what comes out today, you can check it out here . New Doves, new one from The Tragically Hip, etc. Not a bad week. Also, we're breaking things up a bit, rearranging [...]
2009Modern Love RecordsBuy3/10Many people complain that electronic music is rather boring. Armchair critics deride the form's diverse genres as being stereotypical "techno", the mindless homogeny only enjoyable to those lucky few on a roll or a trip. House, breakbeat, dubstep, trance - to the masses, there's no difference.I believe those detractors to be dead wrong. Unfortunately, Claro Intelecto

Other than the fact that the whole Andy Warhol thing has been done to many times and has to be put to rest, I don't find this portrait that offensive and that's a statement coming from an über-feminist like me. It is more like a testament of the times, a reminder of how far the liberation movement has come and how far it has yet to go. Or just another great conversational piece, to say the least.

After being fairly recent with the songs used last week's installment , I'm bringing it back a little over a decade for songs that may not be considered the best of the bands' respective catalogues, but ones that hold special places in my heart. 13. The Smashing Pumpkins – Perfect (mp3) (3:22) [Time Remaining: 950:43] from Adore Adore seems to be the most maligned album by Billy Corgan and Co.; on it, the band made their foray into a darker, electronica influenced sound, [...]
2009Invada RecordsBuy6.5/10For what they do, Crippled Black Phoenix achieve a fair amount on 200 Tons of Bad Luck. The only problem is, sometimes it just seems like they're doing a bit too much. The disc is compiled from tracks off of two different releases with two very different sounds, and upon listening to the final product, this is more readily apparent than anything else. Clocking in at
