Ane Brun sounds like a Scandinavian folk fairy, or a Dolly Parton and Bjork collaboration. She's been doing good in Scandinavia, with her recently released "Changing of the Seasons" album entering the Scandinavian charts at #1. Her guitar picks while her voice zithers like an autoharp, and critics are praising her girlish but strong tone. There's sincerity in every rise and fall of her voice, and despite their austerity, the instruments that play behind her sound almost strange and foreign to what you might normally hear but amazing melodic and comforting. Last night I had the wonderful pleasures of seeing Ane Brun play at Union Hall. She was everything I hoped she would be and more - incredibly talented, sweet, funny. It was really a great show. She played all of my favorite songs of hers, including Song No. 6, The Puzzle, Rubber & Soul, and more. In between the songs, she would tell us about what the songs were about, her inspirations, her

Photo: Kimicon . Today I awoke before my desire. At the foot of the bed it lay in its sore spot, twitching in nightmare or dream. I passed my hand over it, like an abscess. No birds were aware of me. They came and went, nothing resembled anything else. The house across the water was still, as if it would always be frozen. - Matthew Zapruder. Into Theresa Andersson 's second song, I knew that she would be a tough act to follow, especially once a majority of instruments were cleared from the stage and only three acoustic guitars and three microphones were all that remained for both Tobias Fröberg and Ane Brun . Fröberg's set came after Andersson's and completely changed the atmosphere of the Tin Angel. He was slightly awkward, which I would attribute to the cultural differences and slight language barrier (it was very cool to hear Tobias (Toh-bee-us), Ane (Ahn-ee) and Theresa speak Swedish with each [...]

This has been a crazy week (in a good way! OBAMA! WOO!) so I'm going to post some music videos today. First up is Jukebox the Ghost with their new video for Victoria. It premieres on MTV2's Subterranean at 1am tonight. Jukebox the Ghost - New Music - More Music Videos Next is a pretty cool video (in my opinion) by Passion Pit for their song Sleepyhead. Here is an older video from The XYZ

(REPOSTED with NO DOWNLOADS; see HERE for more) We're a bit off schedule here at Cover Lay Down, and for that I apologize; I wrote this post for our usual Wednesday deadline, but the part of my brain that used to be devoted to blogging appears to have been partially subsumed by the stress of impending host-loss, and the urgent need to re-imagine the blog in another form in order to continue blogging within what I continue to maintain are perfectly legitimate, legal boundaries. As I wrote this [...]

This beautiful Cyndi Lauper cover by Stockholm's Ane Brun is excellent, but there are other wonderful tracks on her new album Changing Of the Seasons as well. Brun's delicate voice, accompanied by either simple guitar or piano on tunes like "The Puzzle" and "Linger With Pleasure" will haunt you. And you must have "To Let Myself Go" from A Temporary Dive (2004). You just must. Another knock-out you can hear on her MySpace page is her cover of Alphaville's "Big In Japan," which hopefully we can all buy [...]

How can one not appreciate the music of Sweden's (by way of Norway) Ane Brun ? Her sweet, affecting voice and truly unique song-writing style can be incredibly moving. Her songs are the embodiment of 'heart-felt,' each track carrying a melody that is as memorable as the story being told. And with Seasons , Brun seems to perpetuate her trademark; the thirteen tracks here each carry a subtle, but powerful impact, but are sweetly dressed in gentle guitar, strings and sweeping arrangements. The album's opener, "The Treehouse Song" finds Brun using a [...]

CMJ is going on strong, so that means plenty of shows heading towards NYC or on their way back. Either way, more for us in the IA region. Like always, Thursday has plenty to see. Forget the British Invasion of the '60s. The 2000s are having a Swedish invasion. Tonight and tomorrow, you can catch three of the best singer-songwriters Sweden has to offer. Ane Brun and Tobias Froberg are joined by former native Theresa Andersson , now calling New [...]
by kevin and eliza My legs hurt, my head hurts, but my heart is pumping with life. I love this festival, but it may be the death of me. How many more days do we have of this? After picking up goodie bags and seeing 5 minutes of the awful and awfully named Talk To Angels (think Charlie's band DriveShaft from Lost, only way, way worse) our objective became clear: let's no longer allow ourselves to see shitty bands. And so we set out on our task, towards [...]
by kevin and eliza (shearwater pic by mary sledd) The evening began at the Red Bull Space downtown hosting the CMJ 's. Massages, tacos, and PBR's kicked off the night, but the peeps were kinda mellow, so we decided to head to The Delancey for the College Radio Mixer, AKA home of free vodka. After an hour or so of house vodka and meat pies, the first band took the stage. Naked and Famous ? eh. Not so much. This group was lead by [...]

Wednesday's fixin' to be a big night on the town for us. The beginning part of the evening finds us at the Bowery Ballroom to catch Cory Chisel and Shugo . We're pretty jazzed for Shugo as he has played several times in NYC, but we have yet to catch him. His new record Exit , is fantastic. Canadian band, Women are quickly becoming one of the "buzz bands" to catch at this year's festival, so we'll head up the Ludlow street way to catch them at Cake Shop round 11:15pm. On [...]
