While the title track to Bonnie "Prince" Billy's 1999 masterpiece, I See a Darkness, might be a benchmark of downcast songwriting, Will Oldham is now directing our gaze away from the abyss with a lively, re-imagined arrangement of the once-bleak number. Recorded by Steve Albini, (a common collaborator on Bonnie's earlier output), "I See a Darkness" 2012 finds a buoyant groove in Oldham's sparse original, thanks largely to his backing band over the past few years: Ben Boye, Van Campbell, Emmett Kelly, Danny Kiely, and Angel Olsen. Add the contrast of director Ben Berman's black and white photography against an off-kilter [...]

photos by Ryan Muir Angel Olsen @ Glasslands - 4/4/2012 Ryan managed to catch Com Truise AND Purity Ring , and still found time to catch three of the talented singer-songwriters playing Glasslands last night (4/4), one of whom is from Chicago and plays again in NYC this week . More of his pictures from Glasslands, below... Continue reading "Angel Olsen, Doe Paoro & Cat Martino played Glasslands (pics)" at [...]

Angel Olsen at Glasslands in 2011 ( more by Dominick Mastrangelo ) Chicago's Angel Olsen is in Brooklyn for two shows this week including Glasslands TONIGHT (4/4) with Sufjan/Sharon Van Etten collaborator Cat Martino , Doe Paoro , and Knox . Tickets for tonight's show are available. Angel also plays another Brooklyn show at Littlefield on [...]
Every now and then - whenever Will Oldham takes a break from traveling the world - we get a chance to hear members of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's latest live lineup take the stage solo. And given that the debut from Angel Olsen, aka Angela Babbler , has never left our turntable's side since back in 2010 while solo outings are rare of late, this video that popped up last fall has been the best the web has to offer for some time. Featuring the Cairo Gang's Emmett Kelly on harmony vocals and guitar, the tune [...]
Video: Bonnie "Prince" Billy Black Cab Session Will Oldham, Cairo Gang's Emmett Kelly, Angel Olsen, and Ben Boye packed into a London taxi for the 100th episode of Black Cab Sessions, taking on a pair of somewhat diametrically opposed tunes: children's song "My Nurse Smells Like Coconuts" and a more world-weary cut off their new album, Wolfroy Goes To Town. Given the intimate feel of that LP, the close-knit harmonies and patient pace of "Black Captain" fit this setting like a glove. Check it out above (Bonnie's jumpy reaction to the siren [...]

Cropped Out Fest not only succeeded in coming back a second time, a feat not easily accomplished, the stridently fringe festival also returned in bigger and better fashion - in terms of attendance, community enthusiasm, facilities, and that intangible festival vibe that can make or break a multi-stage weekend event. Cropped Out 2011 certainly became the product of learning what worked and what didn't from the inaugural fest last year. Though the weather is beautiful in this part of the country during the fall, it can also act unpredictably, as we learned during Cropped Out 2010 - [...]

Tweet Will Oldham, better known as Bonnie "Prince" Billy , has a pretty well solidified spot in amongst today's very best folk artists. He's in with damned enviable company in Oberst, Waits, and Callahan to name a few. With obvious ease, Oldham has consistently churned out expertly crafted, honest, brooding music for more than a decade. In fact, he's been so bloody consistent at it for so many years that he's achieved a transcendence of age that's characteristic of so many icons. It's like he's [...]
Angel Olsen - My Last Date (with You) (Skeeter Davis cover) (via whenigodeaf )

Video: Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Quail and Dumplings Will Oldham unveiled the first single off his forthcoming Bonnie "Prince" Billy LP, Wolfroy Goes to Town , today via the above Ben Berman-directed clip, in which past collaborator Kennan Gudjonsson is washed ashore a desert island before being nursed back to health by grass skirt-donning locals and sent back to sea on a makeshift raft. The biggest highlight though — both of the tune and video — is when Gudjonsson partner Nina Nastasia lip-syncs Angel Olsen's lead [...]

As it turns out, our favorite Merle Haggard fan , Will Oldham, does have a new LP on the way after all: Wolfroy Goes to Town , the forthcoming 10-track set features Bonnie "Prince" Billy's excellent recent touring band of Ben Boye, Van Campbell, Shahzad Ismaily, Emmett Kelly, Danny Kiely, and Angel Olsen . (This lineup put on one of the best intimate shows I've ever seen last year at a 200-capacity chapel.) The LP, which is due out via Drag City on October 4, dons the cover art above and tracklist below. [...]

Angel Olsen — "In the Morning" It's been a while since we've heard anything new from Angel Olsen after her incredible debut Strange Cacti (which you can get on Bathetic Records ). Fans, rejoice, as Olsen has just contributed a new song to TwoSyllable Record 's recent Chicago Compilation featuring musicians from, you guessed it, Chi-City. In the Morning is a simple and haunting track [...]

Weekly Tape Deck , Altered Zones , and Yours Truly have stumbled upon a wonderful find in the Chicago folk whisperer Angel Olsen . The few tracks I've heard have a classic folk feel that's jam-packed with personality from Olsen. Like all great folk music, Olsen's voice is the focus as her electrifying crooning wraps around the spine of her softly strummed acoustic guitar. What's impressive is how Olsen is just as moving in her moments of whispering as she is when all out singing. Olsen has a deep understanding of who [...]

Yes!

It's been a while since we heard Angel Olsen 's splendid vocal-work, a voice that is at once tragic, anxious but sweet and posh. A voice you may fall for with each listen. Luckily her songwriting ability is also notable, the combination of the two plays like a heartbroken Judy Garland consoling herself by singing Tom Waits songs. This song "In The Morning" comes courtesy of the TwoSyllable Records Chicago Compilation , and you guessed it, all artists are from Chi-town. TwoSyllable actually refers to this as a "mixtape" but it has passion-project written [...]
Video: Angel Olsen - "The Waiting" Fans of a quaint kitchen 's early-reflection echo and 24B-endorsed newcomer Angel Olsen should have no trouble adoring this recent take on new tune "The Waiting" for Living Room Songs .
Video: Bonnie "Prince" Billy Plays Merle Haggard-Inspired New Song Will Oldham, Emmett Kelly (aka the Cairo Gang), and Angel Olsen completed a string of free shows in Florida record stores this week, unveiling a number of new tunes said to be off a forthcoming Bonnie "Prince" Billy LP. A few previews of the latest material from Bonnie and friends have hit the web, but let's here's one choice cut from Fort Lauderdale's Radio-Active Records, where Oldham (sans beard!) reflects on turning 41 before debuting an excellent new song inspired by Merle Haggard.
