The vital role of music in illustrating a conflict between light and dark themes in David Lynch's cult series Twin Peaks cannot be understated. "Laura Palmer's Theme" is a particularly strong example, where composer Angelo Badalamenti covers hope and hopelessness in a cloak of dissonance and resolve with such foreboding, seamless attention to Lynch's narrative that it'd always left me pondering the magic behind their collaborative process... until yesterday. Last night, Nicolas Jaar curated a 2-hour program for BBC Radio's Essential Mix , featuring Jonny Greenwood, Bill Callahan, Aphex Twin, and tunes from many others. Among his eclectic playlist was a [...]

Remember Remember - Twin Peaks Theme [Angelo Badalamenti] | bx . watch the original

Photo by G. Angelo Badalamenti and Geoffrey Dicker It's hard to believe that within a matter of months, I have been fortunate enough to meet Twin Peaks creator David Lynch as well as the series music composer Angelo Badalamenti! (Of course, if you are a regular reader - and I thank you for your patronage - you know this crazy stuff happens to me all the time). I was at another event, not related to Twin Peaks whatsoever, when someone I was chatting with pointed out [...]

To quote Rolph Harris, can ye till what it is yet? elyts ni kcab emoc ot gniog si ekil uoy mug eht MP3: Julee Cruise- The Nightingale David Lynch's new album Crazy Clown Time is a zany mess with a few redeeming moments, but not enough to rescue it from being a curiosity. After listening to it once or twice I bolted back to [...]

"People call me a director, but I really think of myself as a sound man." - David Lynch , quoted in Michael Chion's David Lynch David Lynch 's electro-pop album Crazy Clown Time has left a lot of music fans and critics scratching their heads. But, looking back at the filmmaker's long history of re-purposing pop music in his films and other work, it's possible that Crazy Clown Time is one of the least strange moves that the veteran film director, meditation guru, coffee entrepreneur, [...]

Most cinephiles have their own opinion on the works of David Lynch , said opinions usually including the somewhat lazy branding somewhere or other of the man as being a 'surrealist'. No doubt his works can be unsettling, macabre, and strangely warped but more than anything what links them all together is a spine of intense and perceptive originality. Drawing from film noir, classic 'Americana' imagery, and his own skewed perspective on relationships, life and people, he has succeeded in creating his own 'Lynchian' world. Music, rightly, plays an enormous part in all of his work, whether [...]
Expectations for David Lynch's first album revolve around two reference points. The most glaring is to his idiosyncratic work as a filmmaker. It is expected that Crazy Clown Time will contain the darkness and mystique of films like Blue Velvet or Mulholland Drive, but the actual stylistic direction of the music is a different question.

Shades of Springsteen's Nebraska bristle within Lewis' subtle yet stunning compositions. He gently plucks his acoustics, touting a bluesy swagger with a touch of reverb. Throughout L'Amour, the virtually unknown artist plays pianos and guitars organically with an eerie sense of complacency, produced at a gentle pace like a somber ballad. This patient mode of [...]

The American TV series Twin Peaks spawned three soundtrack albums: one inspired by the series, one for the prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me and one focusing on music from Season Two but also including tracks used in the pilot, Season One, and the prequel film. All the songs from the album were written by Angelo Badalamenti, which received the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "Twin Peaks Theme". Most of the songs are instrumental pieces, but the three songs that contain lyrics were written by David Lynch. These three songs are [...]

You know it's been a while since you updated your blog when WordPress have completely changed the interface! I would like to say I've been busy completing the only two compulsory pieces of work I have to do this year, but that would be a huge lie. I have, however, been to Barcelona and visited the Cote d'Azur; just missing the Film Festival in Cannes and arriving just before the Grand Prix in Monaco. I also quit my job and absorbed an unhealthy amount of sun. Now, I'm faced with the task of completing a 2,500 [...]

My first contact with Matthew Mercer came about almost ten years ago through mutual friends. We immediately bonded over criss-crossing musical tastes and a constant hunger for new stuff to listen to. He was also an extremely talented composer with formal training and a real ear for tension. Early music was under the Systm name and fit in with the IDM sound of Autechre, Phonem, Arovane, etc. His progression into dance music was soon piqued by the glitch techno work of Akufen and the way that IDM sounds were given a new lease through 4/4. Soon enough he [...]

Natasha Khan - "Up In Flames" (Lynch/Badalamenti Cover) In honor of the week that brought us two electropop solo singles from David Lynch, I'd be remiss in not sharing this amazing cover of a Lynch/Angelo Badalamenti-penned tune by Bat for Lashes' Natasha Khan (with a little help from Jools Holland and his band) we stumbled upon while revisiting the director's musical oeuvre. "Up In flames" first appeared in (and was presumably written for) Lynch's 1990 film Wild At Heart , performed during the opening credits by KoKo [...]
Over the past 25 years the collaboration between David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti has yielded many a monster-producing some of cinemas most gothic, memorable and atmospheric scores. A relationship that began with Lynch's 1986 dark masterpiece Blue Velvet, in which Badalamenti was brought on board to flesh out the aural landscape, the film also marked [...]
