It's been a long while since we turned to the mailbag, but even after pulling out most of the vast Dylan tribute coverage over the last few months, it's bulging at the seams with the good stuff. So, as always, we've sifted through the chaff to find the best recent releases from new, practically new, and still under-the-radar artists - and happily, plenty in this late Spring crop is well worth your while. From classic jump-up cajun to broken-down bedroom folk to full-blown folk-influenced rock and roll, this month's backlog best [...]

(+) (=) Via Pitchfork ... The Australian band that had a mid-90s alt-rock hit with a cover of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle"? Well, last year, former Frente! leader Angie Hart put out an album called Eat My Shadow featuring a duet with none other than Bonnie "Prince" Billy . The lackadaisical country-folk tune is called "Little Bridges" and you can stream it at Hart's MySpace right [...]

The best way to sing a duet with Will Oldham, aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy (aka the dude I get crazy creative nightmares about meeting), is to take the lead, I say. For example, my favorite vocal collaboration of the lot from the Palace Brother was on last year's turn of the (20th) century covers EP Among the Gold , in which Oldham traded off vox with Louisville, KY-based singer Cheyenne Mize. That was, of course, until the day this post was scribbled out… Oldham recently accompanied Aussie [...]

Two months ago, I found myself sitting in a cab on the way back to my dorm at 2AM. There I was, still reeling from the overflowing joy of an amazing gig experience. The streets were literally deserted. Trees basked in an ember-colored glow rolled by. Right at that moment, suddenly the lyrics of The Smiths' "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" popped in my head. And it just felt so... right. Finally, I understood it. Now I don't know much about The Smiths, and I think I've only heard about 5 [...]
Angie Hart rose to fame as the lead singer of Melbourne's Frente in the early 90's. With new album Eat My Shadow She's opted for simplicity on her sophomore solo release, putting the focus on her voice and lyrics. Today's Top Tune is " Loving It, Hating It ."

I was never a real fan of goth-rock, though as I've written about before, pretty much anything that made the Top 40 in the 80s seems to linger in the minds and hearts of both my own generation and the artists it has since spawned. And The Cure was undeniably the most prevalent band of its type in mainstream mall culture when I was growing up: in my early adolescence, I dated several girls with somber black-and-white Robert Smith posters on their bedroom walls, and - looking back - can only suppose that the band's [...]

To paraphrase Steve Earle´s famous remark on Townes Van Zandt: Will Oldham aka Bonnie Prince Billy is one the greatest modern-day musicians around, and I´ll stand on Beck´s coffee table in my Onitsuka Tigers and say that. But hey, he´ll probably agree. Anyway: Bonnie Prince Billy will soon release his second album of the year, and that´s great news. Entitled Funtown Comedown , and available on vinyl and as a download only, it´ll feature a mix of Bonnie classics and covers performed live with Louisville locals The Picket Line. So you´d [...]

NORWAY: Singer/songwriter Ane Brun recently recorded her own acoustic version of Alphaville's 'Big In Japan' for a Swedish documentary called 'Stor I Japan'. It's currently sitting atop the iTunes Sweden chart. The simplicity of her cover reminds me of her sublime collaboration with Koop for 'Koop Island Blues'. Ane Brun - Big in Japan (Alphaville Cover) AUSTRALIA: Angie Hart has a remarkable musical output that's enough for a whole week (or more) worth of coverage. Either when she was [...]
