Based out of Los Angeles, Angie Mattson has a diverse background. Mattson left her modeling career on runways in Tokyo and New York, moving on to pursue music full time. She has a smoky, powerful voice and a sexual presence that permeates her music. She has toured with some very big name like indie icons Suzanne Vega and Melissa Ferrick. Mattson also went on a completely sold out tour with Uh Huh Her (L Word actress Leisha Hailey's band). Her most recent album was recorded in Malmo, Sweden and she tours internationally on a regular basis. [...]

Perhaps Angie Mattson was destined for a life in music when her mother named her after her favorite Rolling Stone's song. She is an adventurer and free spirit who has no shortage of inspiration; moving to North Carolina with a lover at 18, traveling and living in an old blue school bus selling her art, then moving to Tokyo to work as a model. Not to mention that she taught herself to play guitar on a small sailboat in the Caribbean where she lived for a year. It was among these beautiful and sometimes ghostly green [...]

Okay, I know that the bulk of the 9B readership aren't gonna dig this chick too much. That said, part of that "get back to writing from a personal voice" means also getting back to writing about what I like and not getting too worried about how it's gonna get received by y'all. When I was younger I listened to a lot of very aggressive industrial music. It's a genre that, let's be real, isn't very "romantic", so when I was so lucky as to get a girl to come over to my apartment I'd always fire up [...]

Seven tracks clocking in at just under a half an hour Skeleton Arm is an intriguing recording from Highland Park L.A. based singer-songwriter Angie (named after her mothers favourite Stones track) Mattson, there's no doubt the star of the show for me is Angie's sultry vocal, but the writing and production are strong too on this eclectic mini-album / EP, it was released in June on Angie's own label Radio Nine Records from where I bagged myself a signed copy. The name of this song is "Cool Water," but Angie Mattson's sultry vocals seem to bring it to a boil. It's representative of the more badass alt-country side of her sophomore album "Skeleton Arm," released this week. The follow-up to the Michigan-bred singer-songwriter's 2007 debut "Given to Sudden Panic and Noisy Retreat" finds Mattson dabbling in more straightforward pop too, but it's on the black-hatted and possibly dark-hearted Americana that her voice really shines. She's performed as a touring hand for several L.A. artists and even has a degree in Aquatics Biology and Fisheries Management, but it's nice [...]

Yeah, I know, Valentine's Day is commercial and naff. All kinds of idiots will play Every Breath You Take or You're Beautiful or similar inappropriate to complement the overpriced roses. There is nothing wrong, of course, with letting music doing your talking, but nothing declares love as sloppily as a badly chosen song. To be clear, Perfect Day and fucking With Or Without You are about love, but not in a romantic sense. Here is the first part of a few songs which, I think, do a good job of expressing romantic love, or talking about being in requited love. [...]

[Chapter 3 of Jonneine Zapata's tour diary. The singer and her quintet are on a national tour supporting Soulsavers: ] Sept. 12 Underestimated San Diego. At 8:30 p.m., kids lined up on the street outside the Casbah, and they're dead interested in the openers. Is this a trip to you? Because it's a trip to me. The room is exactly our speed — tight stage, low lit and close to the ground. The mic is spasming on every song (cutting in and out on [...]

Billy Corgan has been holed up in L.A. in recent months, writing new Smashing Pumpkins material, and at the Sky Saxon Tribute on Friday night at the Echoplex, he sprung one on the audience. Fronting a one-night-only band called Spirits in the Sky, which featured members of Strawberry Alarm Clock and the Electric Prunes (as well as new Smashing Pumpkins drummer Mike Byrne), Corgan debuted a pop-leaning number titled "Freak." And it was good, very good, something that recalled the material on "Mellon Collie," only fresher. Radio programmers, start your engines. You can't quite get the full power [...]

It's been too long since I posted a podcast, so this is Step 1 in catching up. This fourth edition of the Buzzsicle features songs from 17 L.A. artists whose names I heard in the aftermath of last month's South by Southwest Music Festival . In my Austin wanderings, I mostly avoided L.A. bands, figuring I could always see them at home, but during the inevitable schmoozing of the festival I asked friends, fans and random people who they'd seen and who made an impression. Tracklist follows the jump. ||| Download: "Buzzsicle 43 [...]

Hello Austin! We've arrived in sunny Austin. The weather here was just gorgeous yesterday, 28 C and sunny. We spent the day shopping away at highland mall, I got some awsome shoes at Forever 21 for just 6 bucks and then we went to check out my friend Angie Mattson's showcase. To those who are attending SXSW '09: Oh, you lucky bastards. I will never get see such a large-scale music event being held in Singapore, not in my lifetime anyway. Unless our local music scene evolves at a crazy speed, and the government decides to spend tonnes of money bringing in talented musicians from overseas and we reclaim more land and convert our void decks, rooftops and public parks into spanking new music venues... ...otherwise I should just save up to visit Austin, Texas. But I digress. So I checked [...]
