We're well into the Spring Semester here in South Australia. Or the second semester. Or 'Study Period 52 as it's prosaically termed by university officials. It is the semester in which I earn my keep - coordinating the large lecture course I was hired to teach. But I've also taken on a number of other bits and pieces here and there - human physiology, pathology, clinical chemistry. I know little or nothing about human physiology or pathology and I nearly failed biochemistry and organic chemistry as an undergraduate. I'm a geneticist, a student of Mendel and [...]
Unlike the deplorable lack of organization at your place of employment, here at UI HQ we like to keep up with the paperwork. Every week, we gleefully pore through our files and cherry-pick a lovely retro interview especially for you. That's right boys and girls, it's time to Flashion Backward and fish out a vintage gem–the better to explore the strange vortex in which fashion and musicians meet. Today we're re-examining Bang Camaro's unique perspective on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Dubbed metal's "favorite glee club," the gaggle of rockers (sometimes approaching [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown words: Sean For Billie Joe Armstrong and co, deciding to put the problems of the world, or more accurately America, down to more than lack of sex had a hugely paradoxical impact on their band. Despite being widely criticised by fans of their previous works, and quite possibly losing them more fans than gained them via the words 'sell-outs' and other synonyms, it catapulted them into the musical stratosphere, selling millions and paving the way for huge stadium gigs. [...]

This totally came to me as a surprise because usually with a name like DJ Hell and a reputation for pushing the electroclash sound back in the day, this track speaks more like Massive Attack than a person who named themselves after the most hardcore place in the ethereal planes. Hell's "The Angst" is a brooding piece that would fit perfectly into a psycho-thriller flick. The track slowly builds, but never really explodes, staying at a steady pace using subtle instrumentation to build intensity of a form. For some it may come [...]

I hate dreams, .... I hate hearing other people's dreams, ... and I live with a woman who loves to tell me her dreams first thing in the morning, go figure! (She loves morning sex as well, which I'm also not a huge fan of, but hey I'm coming around to that). But back to the topic at hand, I hate dreaming. Most people go to sleep hoping for good dreams. I go to sleep hoping to not dream. My dreams are rarely satisfying, even the good ones. Last night's was particularly emblematic of this point. [...]

Do you still listen to the music you loved in high school? Lately, I'm beginning to feel that the worse the news gets, the more us 30 and 40 somethings retreat into our past, into the music we cut our teeth on during the last great economic downturn. Every semi serious music lover experiences changes in their musical taste as they become exposed to more and different kinds of genres. Part of blogging about music, for me, is looking back on how I received new music at different points in my life and comparing those memories to how [...]

Angst was a band that broke up at the wrong time. First of all, Joe Pope and Jon E. Risk had just hit their stride as songwriters with their last two albums, Mystery Spot (1987) and Cry For Happy (1988). Second, the sound they had stumbled on by this point, a mix country twang and alt-rock jangle informed by their hardcore roots, would become all the rage a couple years later after the release of Uncle Tupelo's No Depression (1990). Uncle Tupelo often gets [...]

There's some great new music by Trapt coming out. I've been a fan of Trapt for a while now, it's a sound that combines terrific melodies with a good old fashioned head-banging beat and yet doesn't quite drive my lover mad like NIN or Puscifier or Cold does. And the words mean something, full of angst and well just plain old heartbreak, yeah I'm a sucker for that. Plus, it's not the kind of death-dirge sound of Metallica and other bands in that genre that makes me want to take a knife to my tender bits. The single [...]

dl: SUNSHINE ANDERSON - Problems ( YSI ) ------------------------------ ------------------------------ -------- ------- I'm nearly a year and a half late on this, but I've finally acquired Sunshine Anderson 's second album Sunshine At Midnight (thanks to my short stay on eMusic ). I've always been obsessed with her 2001 single "Heard It All Before" , one of the ultimate female break-up songs. The video is especially amazing, and I like to think that all women who are [...]
Nathan Nothin' here! Since I started this blog, I've been going through my records, seeing what all gems might be found. I realized I should have some cataloging of what I have, but where & how to begin? My collection is in what most others have called random order or 'a mess'. I've always tried to group my records by style or genre rather than alphabetically by title or artist. This leads to some randomness, I'll admit, especially when I don't always put the records back that I happen to be listening to until some time [...]
