After years of touring together, the singer/ songwriter brother-sister duo Angus & Julia Stone recently separated and are each launching their own own solo projects. "Broken Brights" is a strong start for Angus Stone 's first single. Angus Stone - "Broken Brights" From Angus- "These writings from the record are of great shift for me in the story telling of these past four years of traveling. Playing this record live is going to be quite a euphoric walk for me. I'm ready at the end of the year [...]

Many of you are already probably familiar with Angus Stone who is one half of Angus & Julia Stone , his full-time band that he plays in with his sister. I was initially disappointed when I heard the two wouldn't be making a follow-up to 20102s awesome full-length Down The Way . That blow was softened when the two announced they were each planning on releasing separate solo endeavors. Now we have the first listen to "Broken Brights" a soft, waltzing gem which will appear on the new record, [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Jordie Lane is not Angus Stone. He's got far too much lyrical depth and seems to be able to write songs that are, well, enjoyable. Live, he's got a certain roguish charm - as well as a pseudo-self-defeating attitude, and a reluctant acceptance of the inevitable comparisons to the brother Stone. He's one of Australia's best, and I love his music - especially the track War Rages On from his first album. Not From Round Here, the first single from his new album [...]
Ever wonder why so many emerging bands coming out of the gum trees down under lately? Well, for one, like Sweden, they get lots of community and governmental support to assist them in their formative stages. For example, The Seed Fund, founded by John Butler (John Butler Trio) and Danielle Caruana in 2005 and is more recently funded by the who's who of the Australian Music Industry was formed in the last 5 years to help emerging artists. The Seed aims to help Australian artists from any background, creating art and music across any genre, to establish [...]
Most of us know the Aussie brother and sister duo, Angus & Julia, by now with highly anticipated release, Down The Way which has been blogged about on our site on several occasions. However, Angus Stone's solo project, Lady of the Sunshine, has been a complete mystery to us until tonight..even as avid Stone fans. Lady of The Sunshine reveals a darker more contemplative side of Angus in his debut album, 'Smoking Gun'. 'Smoking Gun' sees Angus crawl into the alt music underground world, embracing a myriad of themes, emotions and genres that allowed him the [...]

Joni Mitchell 's early influence on her peers is part of the mythos of her era, and their support a major factor in her future success; it's telling that David Crosby, Fairport Convention, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Buffy St. Marie, and Judy Collins all thought enough of Joni's songwriting to cover her work long before she won the Grammy for Best Folk Performance in 1970 - or indeed, in many cases, before she had a chance to record those songs herself. But though Joni Mitchell's emergence is often lumped in with the transformation of [...]

Today you get eight versions of painter-turned-music-legend Joni Mitchell's ( fansite wiki AMG ) 1971 " River ." She first started singing by belting out Christmas carols in a children's hospital. By 1971 she was in California, missing the winters of Canada and writing a "selfish and sad" paean to the end of a relationship. I don't have a lot to say about this song, except that I had planned at one point to include every single one of these versions on this year's compilation, Have Yourself A Depressing Little Christmas. (Watch this [...]

Angus and Julia Stone are siblings from Sydney who make a really quite glorious sound, full of harmony, harmonica, steel guitar, brushed drums and, oh yes, a trumpet. I went to see them a couple of nights ago and came away quite smitten. It's reminiscent of the delights of Ella Guru , with a boy/girl, folky multi-instrumental thing going on. What makes them stand out is that they are two concomitant halves and contribute equally to a kind of organic sounding whole. There's a real difference in the vocals - Angus is [...]

I'm not sure if a CD that has me singing The Veronicas' songs is good thing. It may be testimony to the quality of this particular album, but it certainly doesn't do much for my credibility. For those who aren't aware of what this album is, it's basically Australian men covering female artists. All the artists, on both sides of equation, are quite high profile and it's pretty impressive for Dew Process to have assembled such a line up and made this CD happen. I must admit, I wasn't very optimistic going into this CD. To me it seemed like [...]
