I'm about as sceptical of the remix as Anika's musical outpour is ceaselessly claustrophobic, though that said I can appreciate it has a couple core values: 1) it has an inevitable capacity to introduce acolytes of any one artist to whoever it may be that embarks upon any which reconstruction, and 2) were a bigger name to chip in a reconsideration, then it can serve as an indisputable platform for a potentially underestimated, or rather undervalued cultural understudy. I guess the idiosyncratic originality of Suuns is more widely renowned than the psychotic covers of the Invada industrialist aforesaid [...]

It's with a faint sense of trepidation we hike forever upward toward Alexandra Palace, not least as the sweltering trudge seemingly represents the metaphoric arrival of festival season which begins in earnest in but a few short weeks' time. It's the time of the season for early starts and later nights, lager glugged from the moment morning stumbles into afternoon as liver, lobes and inner ears quiver as one. Which painfully reminds me I've neglected to bring the old in-ears. Shite. Though Karen O & co. haven't opted for anywhere near as ruinous a line up as ATP [...]

Returning for a third outing, if this year streamlined to but the one solitary day next month is to witness the return of All Tomorrow's Parties' tangential I'll Be Your Mirror festival to Alexandra Palace for an afternoon-cum-early evening-cum-black night shebang which looks set to be explosive, and so too expansive as any other. For where previous editions have focussed on altogether gloomier aesthetics ( Portishead called upon anyone and everyone from DOOM and Company Flow to Swans and GY!BE, whilst last year featured the likes of the Melvins, Slayer, Codeine and so on) this [...]
Following on from Redg Weeks' superlative Run To Your Mama redux of a couple weeks back, the In to Weeks' Vada – Geoff Barrow – here clambers up the reverb tower to rework a previously unreleased Anika track entitled Bloodhound. Typically claustrophobic though at that same time a little more loose in contrast with the usual brood, the adopted Berlinerin returns with quintessentially inauspicious lyrics of "They're coming to get you/ They won't stop 'til you're found" which ooze forth from gloopy gusts of echo and fade. Similarly rhythmically, there's an [...]

It's been a few years since Anika's coincidental meeting with Geoff Barrow - a meeting that saw the Portishead man and his Beak> cohorts help create the wonderfully dark and uncompromising debut from the artist. Thankfully Anika returns next week with a new EP - once more working alongside Beak> - to create a series cover songs - from Chromatics to The Kinks - that lurk in the shadows and remain uncompromisingly raw. Bowlegs: What’s the thinking behind releasing an EP of covers? Are you saving your own material for the next album? Did Geoff [...]

Facebook I fell pretty hard for Anika right at the end of 2010 but as someone who rarely plays live in the UK my only time seeing her to date was at Field Day 2011, a performance which brought to life her debut full-length, predominately a covers LP where Anika morphs some pretty well known tracks with her unique 'blend of 60's dub and early 80's post-punk'. After a seemingly quiet year she returns with a new EP, likewise self-titled, containing a couple of tracks we already know, "I Go [...]

England's Anika covers "Love Buzz" by Shocking Blue a song that was famously covered by Kurt Cobain. Anika new EP on Stones Throw April 16th. Anika channels a bit of krautock, dub and Nico, produced by Geoff Barrow (Portishead) and Beak>.

Photo by Dominick Mastrangelo Chvrches have a lovely roller rink video for their song "Now is Not The Time." Where previous roller rink videos might focus on the retro dress or mad tricks, Chvrches instead lets the lights play while skaters circle like ghosts and their synth pop song sweetly fills the cavernous space. You can also hear their KEXP studio session here . [ Stereogum ] Today a [...]

Anika may have spent significant amounts of her life in England, but Berlin is the basis of her sound. There is the dubbed-out wobble of Metal Box-era PiL but taken to East Germany and dyed sheet metal grey. "Love Buzz" is a Shocking Blue song that was famously covered by Kurt Cobain , and now absolved of any color by Anika. This sounds like it was given the Grimm Fairy Tale treatment, run through a filter of krautock, Nico, and cabbage salad. Yet there's something funky to its automaton clanking. This would be a Top 40 hit [...]

Anika is set to release a self-titled covers EP on April 16th via Stones Throw, but ahead of its release she's unveiled her take on Shocking Blue's 'Love Buzz'. The original is dark enough to occupy space within Anika's audio landscape (that opening guitar line still sounds great, doesn't it?) - but contains enough room for Annika Henderson to really drown it in bassy reverb. The major difference is the departure of the manic drumming found in the original. Have a listen below, and head over to the Stones Throw website to pre-order [...]

Following the release of her critically acclaimed 2010 debut, Anika returns with a seductive self-titled EP out on Stones Throw Records . The Bristol/Berlin-based singer already shared her cover of Chromatics' "In The City," and now here's her excellent take on Shocking Blue's trippy single "Love Buzz."
Last we heard from Anika, she was adding seedy elements to Chromatics' "I n The City " for her self-titled EP. The collection is mostly covers, including her take on the Crystals' "He Hit Me" and, this, Shocking Blue's bass-heavy "Love Buzz." Anika has been playing the drone-y version of the song live for a while, but now you can check out the studio version below. Read More...
