"Survival of the fittest" is a phrase that applies to music as much as it does Darwinian theory; artists must constantly evolve lest they want to go the way of the dodo. No band embodies this better than Thrice , who have made it a constant goal to readapt and outdo themselves with each new project. It's ironic, then, that this band, despite churning out album upon album with each different than the last, is in the midst of a farewell tour. After a career spanning fourteen years, the Orange County four-piece is calling it quits for the time [...]
ANIMALS AS LEADERS POST TEASER FOR "WEIGHTLESS" MUSIC VIDEO Progressive instrumental pioneers ANIMALS AS LEADERS have posted a trailer for their new video for "Weightless," the title track from their critically acclaimed 2011 album, which debuted at #92 on the Billboard Top 200 last fall. Alternative Press is hosting an exclusive premiere of the video on their website. The complete "Weightless" video, which will [...]

In case you haven't heard, post-hardcore band Thrice is calling it quits with one last tour this spring. Their indefinite hiatus was announced last November after thirteen years as a band; a career that spanned six albums, including the four-piece concept album, "The Alchemy Index." If you're a fan and you haven't seen them live yet, this is probably your last chance. Animals as Leaders will be providing support on these dates. Some of the dates have already sold out - we wouldn't risk waiting to buy these tickets! MVRemix.com hopes to be covering the Montreal date of [...]
It's Friday, and before the weekend hits, let's do a sweep of all the new music that was just put out, including new tracks from TesseracT, Dying Fetus, Mark Tremonti of Creed fame, Shadows Fall, Enslaved grind masters Phobia and a video teaser from Animals As Leaders. Let's begin... TesseracT have posted their cover of ...
There's been some confusion about what the Twelfth Best Modern Metal Drummer Navene Koperweis is up to now that he's quit Animals as Leaders. No, he's not in Darkest Hour, and no, he's not in any other metal band; au contraire, he quit AAL to focus on his own solo electronic music project simply called Navene K. And [...]
Are the makers of the web comic "Cyanide and Happiness" Animals as Leaders fans? Their latest installment would suggest that they are, at the very least, aware of the band's existence (click to enlarge): I don't think this is much funnier than the recurring "Mariska Hargitay" joke in that awful movie The Love Guru, but [...]
Not two weeks after MetalSucks named him the twelfth best modern metal drummer, Navene Koperweis announced that he'd left Animals as Leaders, the band that elevated his status to a member of the drumming elite. Navene didn't have much to say about the split at the time, only that it was amicable and that he was [...]
Whoa! This is a shocker. When Sick Drummer Magazine first reported that Animals As Leaders might have a new drummer, I didn't want to believe it. How could drumming mastermind Navene Koperweis quit a band that he is very much an important member of? Then, late Friday night, we received a press released that confirmed ...
Navene Koperweis, who we just named the twelfth best drummer in modern metal a couple of weeks ago, has parted ways with Animals as Leaders. Statements make it clear that the split was amicable, emphasizing kittens and bunnies and rainbows and butterfly kisses: "Tosin [Abasi] and Javier [Reyes] are the two most generous, caring and [...]
Dan-Elias Brevig probably got the memo that his shtick of multi-tracking a cappella covers of metal songs has grown kind of tired. So how does he top himself? By covering one of the most technical songs imaginable, Animals as Leaders' fan favorite "CAFO." While it'd be easy to make fun of a cappella kids because, [...]
MetalSucks recently polled its staff to determine The Top 25 Modern Metal Drummers, and after an incredible amount of arguing, name calling, and physical violence, we have finalized that list! The only requirements to be eligible for the list were that the musician in question had to a) play metal (duh), b) play drums (double-duh), and [...]
T.R.A.M. just released the first installment of a video series in which the band members talk about how T.R.A.M. came together. The video is really interesting, and you should definitely watch it after the jump. But what I really want to say here is this: holy shit you guys, have you heard the T.R.A.M. record [...]
We all have some things in our past that we're not proud of. For example, did you know that I was briefly the editor-in-chief of Hit Parader in the 80s? What can I tell you, I had bills to pay*. So Tosin Abasi, one of the most revered guitarists in modern metal, shouldn't feel too embarrassed [...]

Thrice have announced their promised Farewell tour . The band will be beginning a touring hiatus after the tour which will feature support from Animals as Leaders .

Last week we offered up a test-press vinyl and poster of Former Thieves new album The Language That We Speak out now on No Sleep Records. And for the second week in a row, the winner is: Hybridofsteel: "He got really excited when they told him he was going to ICP. Unfortunately, he didn't know that they were talking [...]
A full year ago, we posted the above footage of TRAM, as well as the first in-depth interview with the band. Now, they are finally ready to release their first full-length, Lingua Franca on February 28th. To celebrate, Tosin hopped on the phone with our bud, Vince Neilstein of MetalSucks for an in-depth chat about ...
(photo credit: Loren Scott Photography) Given how much we love Animals as Leaders here at MetalSucks it's kinda hard to believe that we've never formally interviewed band mastermind and founder Tosin Abasi, but there you have it - until now. Abasi, who was ranked #2 by MetalSucks on last year's Top Modern Metal Guitarists list, is [...]

So this is that djent music that all the kids are talking about, huh? I have to admit, I like it better than I thought I would. I like Meshuggah, the band that this sub-genre is named for, but any time you get a bunch of instrumental music going on there is always the possibility of band members more concerned about showing off how many notes they can play in a minute instead of writing songs that actually have a beginning, middle and end, and you know, sound like songs. Or you get the sparkling, technical proficiency [...]

Editor's Note Happy New Year! Some of you are probably wondering what happened to us. Well work, family, and of course organizing our little (not so little anymore) variety show Snob Theater has taken quite a bit of time away from the website. We've had probably the best year so far and I'm happy to announce my favorite records of 2011 to launch the reboot of Kata Rokkar. I don't review albums at all but i do listen to a shitload and it's been a great and surprising year for new music. [...]
