July provided us with a massive compilation, boasting 18 tracks that span over an hour. As expected with a compilation of that length, there are plenty of interesting stylistic pursuits inside. The Stepkids nod to the '70s by tackling a genius fusion of soul and psych-rock, while the '80s make an appearance with several artists [...]
These three artists -- all completely unknown -- pay homage to a variety of alternative-rock styles, ranging from Pavement-inspired alternative to '70s psych-rock. They all sound like you could find them performing in a friend's basement; it's part of their DIY appeal, and one that does not detract from their strong songwriting and interesting modes of production.

The bast of both worlds? Kabir Kumar , the leader of indie band Anna Bradley lives in Berkeley and New York and a mash-up of the East and West Coast styles is to be expected. Sure enough there are pop sensibilities buried under the Big Apple rumbling fast-paced postpunk. The full-length Pavo is a dark record, dealing with adolescens fears and hang-ups. Thankfully no emo self-pity and complaining about a world that doesn't understand them. Rough around the edges, something they should cherish and preserve for future projects. [...]

Best zombie boobs award winner! Back to the hardcore, after yesterday's entry . We're halfway home to Halloween, so it's time to check out the 1985 splattercomedy that asked the question: If the dead come back to life, then what happens to bisected dogs used for biology class? The story behind the single, and expansion on his previous release, is the inclusion of a rhythm section right before Kipling left for Berkeley, and this addition certainly makes Kipling's previous lo-fi sound really explode into a new and exciting phase. The opening section of the self titled track definitely sounds like it could have been penned (and sung) by The Field Mice, before drifting into a swirling indierock love(less) anthem. [...]

nervous is the first Rack & Ruin release from Anna Bradley. This EP was completed in six weeks, and was created entirely by NYC's Kipling, except for one guitar part, one bass part, and the drums (which were played by three different friends). The EP was recorded on home equipment onto Garageband, and then mastered by a friend with Logic. In the words of Kipling, "I guess you could call it lo-fi, though the sounds wouldn't really corroborate with that assessment. The music is guitar and vocal-melody driven, with lots of feedback. I would consider it indie [...]
