In a world as niched as ours it's not often that we wander beyond ye olde indie borders for the sanctity of new and unusual thrills. It's the way we were programmed you see, like a fatal flaw that will forever ensure we are tunnel-eared. How nice then when moments such as this by Sweden's Anna Ternhaim's can take us beyond our meat and 2 veg to a place where a modicum of cool appears to be the order of the day. Part loungey and as elegant as a supermodel exhaling a plume of perfectly rounded cigarette smoke it reveals [...]
Nothing's going to touch David Bowie in these golden years - except maybe these five covers.

Knotan Artists lose record deals; it happens all the time. But when it happens to an international artist and rather than find a new deal, they disappear off your radar entirely, well that's just a shame. Swedish singer-songwriter Frida Hyvönen was represented by Secretly Canadian for her first two albums, 20052s Until Death Comes and 20082s Silence Is Wild , but after that they parted ways and as such, the release of her third pop album To The Soul [...]
Happy 69th to Ms. McVie - we join the songbirds in serenading her with these five covers.
When Swedish songstress Anna Ternheim made an appearance at famed NYC venue The Living Room a few years back she performed solo -- but she did have her trusty iPod loaded up with some beats to serve as her "band" when needed. One song that utilized her pint-sized percussive device was her interesting take on David Bowie's "China Girl". Over a looped beat and her own acoustic guitar picking, Ternheim strips the song down to its core with some finespun minor chord changes and lets the listener take in and savor each lyrical line [...]

Anna Ternheim - Bow Your Head

Frank Yang It seems a bit perverse to use the phrase, "comfort food" with respect to veteran Scottish post-rock giants Mogwai , but there's real truth in it. There's no question that they've grown as musicians and songwriters over their seven studio albums, but its been a gradual, evolutionary pace that's not done much to shock or shake loose (m)any of their fans along the way. Their touring regimen has also been similarly predictable, with typically two North American tours per album and each of those shows being rather understated from a visual point of [...]
It's a fairly impressive feat that two of the year's best Americana albums originate from Sweden. First Aid Kit 's Mike Mogis produced The Lion's Roar and Anna Terheim 's sublime The Night Visitor . Swedish in origin, but with an American heart - Ternheim's new record was written and recorded in Nashville with some of the cities finest session musicians on hand to create an intimate and revealing collection of songs. The highlight comes in the shape of 'The Longer The Waiting (The Sweeter The Kiss)' - a cover of [...]

Anna Ternheim punctuates the release of her new album The Night Visitor with the unveiling of the short performance doc 'The Fingerpicking Party.' The film captures a back porch hang at album engineer Dave Ferguson 's house outside Nashville in Goodlettsville, TN. Watch as Anna , her friend & producer Matthew Sweeney (of Chavez), Ferguson , and a cast of other talented Nashville area musicians spend a lazy afternoon and evening playing songs, drinking beers, [...]

David Thayer Some artists might take the end of an almost 20-year musical project as an opportunity to withdraw from the public eye and regroup for a bit, but the Lætitia Sadier isn't like most artists. After the singular Stereolab went on indefinite and probably permanent hiatus in 2009, instead of turning her focus to her long-running side-project Monade , Sadier also put an end to that identity and instead set to work on The Trip , her first true solo record released under her own name in the [...]

Kjell B Persson It's not unfair to say that Labrador Records has something of a "house sound", and not just for the Swedish accents. With acts like The Radio Dept., Acid House Kings, and Sambassadeur on their roster, they're a reliable source for warm, fuzzy, indie pop-ish sounds and so when they announce a new signing, it's usually worth paying some attention - even when on paper the artist doesn't seem have much in common with the rest of their roster. Or in the case of Amanda Mair , especially when. Not [...]

This is the May 2012 mixtape, Maybe, Maybe Not. They are all my favorite songs from this month, and span a lot of genres, & influences. I think you'll like every song. And, by popular demand, I'm offering the full stream of the mixtape so you can listen to it through the browser. Enjoy. Tracklist: JEFF the Brotherhood - Sixpack Saint Motel - 1997 Cory Branan - Badman Lawrence Arabia - Travelling Shoes [...]

Just like that skinny, lanky Northern Brit-pop bloke once said; "do you remember the first time?" Yes I do. It wasn't as good as the times afterwards, but you certainly never forget the very first one. My first time with Anna Ternheim (so to speak) was a moment of almost absolute aural orgasm. A video of the lady in question along with several other ladies in question doing what they do best; singing beautiful Scandinavian folk a cappella. The song is called 'Summer Rain' and features vocals from Anna (obviously) Nina Kinert, Ane Brun, First Aid Kit and [...]

The Night Visitor’s first track, Solitary Move , is a neatly presented allegory for not wanting to be with another person. It’s not the first, and certainly won’t be the last, time that this subject is entertained in song. What lets the song down is the sad fact that it’s not too original: the arpeggios slink around caustic choral refrains that are meant to signify independence. The irony is that the song doesn’t do anything to warrant it. The sweet songbird/gravel towpath duet is a standard issue prerequisite for records of this ilk, [...]

Sweden's Anna Ternheim lost her mojo for a little while after her 2010 album, Leaving on a Mayday. She won the Swedish Grammys for "Best New Artist" and "Album of the Year" for that amazing one. But she was burnt out on the familiarity of her surroundings afterwords, and set out for New York City, where [...]
