The beginning of the new year always yields a certain childish excitement for me. While we await a brand new release year with high hopes and giddy anticipation, it's also a time for me to sift through the mass amount of year-end lists and catch all the good stuff that fell under my radar last year. I was turned on to Annabel from Will of Beartrap / Tiny Engines list. (check it out here ) and have had a hard time listening to a whole lot else since. [...]
One of 2012's last-minute releases boasts a truly timeless collection of raw and introspective songs in the vein of emo's past. Eight years, one full-length album, multiple seven-inch singles and thousands of miles amassed between dingy basement shows and dusty VFW Halls, Kent, Ohio's Annabel have finally amounted enough material and most importantly, life experience, to justify the release of their sophomore LP, Youth In Youth. Pulling together elements of anthemic power-pop ("Young American"), lithe post-rock ("Home") and intricate, albeit delicate and melodic guitar work ("You Could Be Living Better"), this unassuming Midwestern quartet have managed...

I'm in the Buckeye state! That's Ohio for all of you who are not familiar with this somewhat weird nick name. I actually had to look up what it means and here's what I found out. Not only did the state have a lot of Buckeye trees but William Henry Harrison who ran for president in 1840 used a log cabin made out of buckeye wood his trademark and the name of the tree itself comes from the markings on the nut that resembles the eye of a buck, the Indians called it "hetuck" or "buckeye." So that's today's history [...]

NF Rating: (Terrible and bushy)Before I commence the music video review, I better get something cosmetic out the way first because I believe this will be indicative as to where this review from the following artist will go and hopefully start off a horrendous trend in the beauty parlors everywhere in Auckland. In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Kathleen Winter's debut novel Annabel has been on my radar since garnering critical accolades last year in Canada. Annabel lives up to its hype. Winter tells the coming of age story of a mixed gender child eloquently, lyrically, and powerfully without resorting to sensationalism. The Rumpus wrote of the book: "Annabel is a novel that evokes [...]
Annabel have released an EP, Here We Are Tomorrow, to follow up on their 2009 debut album Each And Everyone . It's a lot of fuzzy noise, like all the good alt-rock out of the 1990s. It's much less accessible than the band's earlier work, and I mean that in the best way possible. Prior releases were catchy, but bordered on simplistic. On this one, Annabel aren't afraid to get dirty. Dirt looks good on this band. They should stay grimey. On the [...]
