Like many female artists with zany "love it or hate it" vocal styling, Anni Rossi's first full-length album is determined not to make things simple for you. The Minnesotan multi-instrumentalist started with violin at age three and went on to train classically. Having earned a solid reputation for impressive live performances where she plucks, taps and strums her viola while stomping on a box for percussion, on Rockwell her classical training shines through in her dedication to vocal embellishments and melodic detours. Clocking in at 26 minutes and recorded in one day with [...]

Top Indie Covers of Radiohead I'm probably one of the biggest Radiohead nuts you'll ever meet. I'll argue with you that Amnesiac is the greatest Radiohead album and that OK Computer is majorly overrated (albeit still a good Radiohead album). I'll argue that Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood may be two of the greatest musicians alive today. I'll argue that the way Radiohead treated Miley Cyrus at the Grammy's was badass. I will, however, agree with most of you that Pablo Honey is Radiohead's weakest album (hurrah!). Apparently, my fellow editor Lloyd declared this week "CHILL [...]

The London folky four-piece Noah and the Whale made huge waves last year with their well-received debut album Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down and memorable singles "5 Years Time" and "Shape of My Heart". Earlier this year in Hoboken, New Jersey, the band laid down the tracks to their follow-up, tentatively titled First Days of Spring , which drummer Doug Fink noted to me in a previous interview that the album will have a more electric feel than their first. So I was eagerly awaiting to hear how [...]

View the full photo set here . I might not have gone to see Ferraby Lionheart or Noah and the Whale singly, so I'm very glad that they've been touring together. Their sets at the Bowery Ballroom on Friday night were stellar, and are definitely cause for me to listen more closely to their work. The first opening act, Anni Rossi, was a violist accompanied by a drummer. She was a bit heavy on the pizzicato, shall we say, and also played and held her viola like a guitar on one song. The [...]

can't buy these impulses from a machine Anni Rossi - Machine I caught this track off of Music For Ants a few weeks ago and its been growing on me more and more. Anni Rossi is some kind of viola virtuoso and crafts light yet slightly haunting little ditties that remind me of the awesome Regina Spektor. "Machine" is the perfect soundtrack to the kind of lazy Saturday I'm having over here. I'll also throw in her cover of Radiohead's "Creep." Not sure what to [...]

A bit like Scout Niblett, Anni Rossi has locked down and impressive, inimitable groove for herself. I love the subtle vocal qualities and inspirational sound of her music. The fantasist in me adores songs like 'The West Coast'. It transported me to the scene I imagined she is singing about. They were black and white imaginary images flashing through my brain, and no I was not asleep. There's a typical simplicity in this homage to Americana from a girl who has lived a life on the road and makes a living singing [...]

The recent surge in mainstream popularity of the folk rock/pop genre is thanks to up-and-coming bands whose strengths lie in heartfelt lyrics and talented musicianship. One band that stood out among the many hopefuls in 2008 was Noah and the Whale , a London quartet whose debut album, "Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down," reached #5 on the UK albums chart; British music magazine Q gave the album 4 stars. Stateside, the sweet sounds of their sunny UK top 10 hit, "5 Years Time," provided the optimistic musical backdrop for a 2008 Saturn car commercial. (You know which [...]

Today brings my seventh installment in the On The Road series. I went to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan this weekend with my band and played at Michigan Tech in Houghton . It was a blast and the eight-hour drive was beautiful. Since the U.P. is so far north, it actually seemed like we were watching the seasons go in reverse; i.e. snow on the ground, gray skies. While watching the snow pile up, I made this mix to keep me company over the weekend. Hope you like it. *MP3: The Hold [...]
