I feel guilty receiving emails from new bands and then just ignoring them. One function of this blog is to help promote new indie music. The internet is the new medium for these hard working emerging bands to get exposure. I will admit that I don't necessarily like everything I hear but you may like what you hear. The whole point is to get the music out there for people to experience good or bad. So, here is the latest explosion of artists from my email inbox. I am really interested in what you [...]
I'm getting a kick out of watching the buzz quickly spread on the Annuals. The indie world eagerly awaits, is this the next band that completely blows up with a soaring Pitchfork review? Think Clap Your Hands Say Yeah of 2005 or Arcade Fire of 2004. Quick recap, As BV pointed out today, Postcore hinted at this in the July 17 post and right on schedule, Ryan Schreiber, with references to Animal Collective, Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire, was practically drooling over the first single "Brother" in their 7/18 song review . [...]

DOWNLOAD: Annuals - Brother (MP3) "File this under the 'stuff what comes out in October' category if you will, but word on the street is that Pitchfork is getting the jump on this band tomorrow, which means we're going to throw it out there today." [ Postcore's Preemptive strike ] "Ace Fu Records is blowin' up, what with getting their claws into Man Man, blog faves DeVotchka, and Books-alikes Tunng. But if their forthcoming Be He Me album lives up to what [...]
Having seen Two Gallants live, I can tell you that they rock quite hard. I've also heard that Wolfmother rock even harder than them. And I can only assume that Gov't Mule rock pretty darn hard too. So if rocking to various degrees is your thing, and you live in Brooklyn (or anywhere nearby, I'm not picky) then this contest is for you. And The Torture Garden is a sponsor, so you know it'll

There's an internet buzz growing about this band from North Carolina and it's wholly justified. They were featured on Pitchfork and Spin in the same week. What caught me was Pitchfork's description as "Like some fantasy hybrid of Animal Collective, the Arcade Fire, and Broken Social Scene" . That's an amalgamation of three of my favourite bands so naturally I was intrigued. So I popped on their track 'Brother'. And I'm hooked.. ambient outdoor noise gives way to plucking guitar, backwards sounding strings leading to an almighty "GO!" from 19 year old singer [...]
How much does coincidence and "luck" go into the discovery, acknowledgement and popularity of art? In the Annuals' case it would seem that a lot of chance played a part in the band's discovery, despite seemingly having had the whole "music thing" already taken care of. Ace Fu Records discovered the band purely [...]
girl you know it's new . we've never heard of these people. so clicky on magic words. Simon Dawes : song one , song two from Carnivore (Record Collection) September 12. A band, not one guy. on tour with Band of Horsies. ------------------------------ --------------- Annuals : songage from Be He Me (Ace Fu) autumn. touring with Art Brut, Tapes N Tapes. features crickets and [...]

Annuals are a North Carolina band that are starting to make a name for themselves. They recently signed to Ace Fu records and will be opening for Tapes 'n Tapes this fall. Their sound is indie experimental and they definitely use some unique textures in their music. Give them a listen and let us know what you think. Annuals - Bleary Eyed Annuals - Dry Clothes

I will always have room in the I Rock Cleveland sound system for indie popsters who callenge the status quo. Adam Baker is the mastermind behind the Raleigh/Durham based band, Annuals. They've already gotten comparisons to other well-established pop collectives like Broken Social Scene and Animal Collective. Their plan of attack is similar to BSS -- take a good melody, cover it with layers of sounds and instrumentation, and disguise it within a unique song structure. Be He Me, the latest from the Annuals, will be released [...]
Annuals alright, seriously? i barely even know who these guys are, i've never heard them, and i have no idea where their mp3s came from on my desktop - i mean this - but oh man. stop everything you're doing. forget headphones, forget work, forget the stove, don't feed your dog. listen to these songs right now. :::: another golden find from Ace Fu, i present you with these mp3s: Annuals - Brother [...]
Chapel Hill, N.C.'s Annuals are getting some pretty major blog buzz these days. Annuals is an experimental indie group led by 19 year-old Adam Baker, who we're told shouts, freaks out, spits and wears a bizarre choir uniform onstage. Modern day comparisons to Animal Collective, Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire and the Flaming Lips are all appropriate, albeit probably unfair to such a talented young group with such promise. We'll have a review of their Be He Me up before it's October release, but here are some mp3's [...]
I like the Raleigh, North Carolinian Annuals . I like Annuals a lot. Their music makes me go... yummm... I feel full like after eating a big meal. It satisfies me. These two songs have what I love: electric guitars, orchestras, good beats, melody... Listen to these songs and feel good. Cassettes Won't Listen , who are playing the upcoming FRICTION show on August 23rd released a remix of The Diggs "Everyone's Starting Over" earlier this week. This was one of my favorite tracks off The Diggs debut, Commute . Cassettes Won't Listen also launched a new website . The Diggs "Everyone's Starting Over" ( Cassettes Won't Listen remix) Viva [...]

Most Pitchfork fans have a sort of love-hate relationship with the organization. People resent the across the board filtering of all music, and resent it even more when they find out about most of their favorite music from them. Everyone wants to find the good stuff on their own so they can claim it as such. Then theres the jargon filled and totally pretentious writing style. Its the whole "who do they think they are acting like they know everything?" Well the thing is, its one of the best services I've ever used in my [...]

Ok, weirdly enough for a music blogger, I don't really read Pitchfork. I'll only end up there if someone else plucks a link from them and makes it sound tantalising enough. But when Pitchfork describe a band as “some fantasy hybrid of Animal Collective, the Arcade Fire, and Broken Social Sceneâ€, I figure I'd better pay attention. Annuals seem to have the dreamy qualities of all these bands - mainly Animal Collective, it has to be said - and share their label with Tunng and DeVotchka. But though I can't get Animal Collective [...]

Shit. I'm from Raleigh! That's what I thought when I read Justin's post today over at Crackers United about Annuals . I tend to get rather proud of people from the Raleigh area (not Clay Aiken per se, but most times) when they do stuff that gets them into the public eye. It's some kind of Southern brotherhood I think. Well, unfortunately, I didn't know of this band though. I missed Pitchfork's inclusion of them in their Mixtape and I missed their shows last weekend (Friday with Bishop Allen [...]

Annuals are Adam Baker, Kenny Florence, Zack Oden, Donzel Radford, Mike Robinson, and Anna Spence. The Raleigh, NC-based six-piece played two shows in New York City last weekend that included a supporting slot for Cold War Kids and Sound Team at The Mercury Lounge and the other at Pianos with Bishop Allen. If I wasn't out of town I definitely would have been to at least one of them. Of course, none of the other CU crew attended the shows because they were all too busy gushing like schoolgirls [...]
As if I needed another reason to want to move back to Utah - I happened to snag an mp3 from The Band of Annuals (not to be confused with The Annuals, from North Carolina), whose homebase is Salt Lake City. Yay! A chance to promote a cool alt-country band from SLC! Now, the band is young, their Myspace has awful misspellings, and they don't seem so great at self-promotion. They also annoyed yours truly with the song "Constant Stride," where Jay Henderson snipes nastily at the people who go to church every Sunday. [...]
I was going to post about this band right when I started but lizzy over at Come Pick Me Up beat me to the punch. I feel like they deserve some more hype, here's my take on them... I first heard the Band of Annuals (then known simply as The Annuals ) in the fall of '05. I met a friend at a Limbeck show in Salt Lake for old times sake and thankfully it turned out to be [...]

"...and don't slow down until you're out of sight." Spouse Hey - This is Lizzy from Come Pick Me Up . That wasn't too subtle, was it? While Taylor is off playing Bono in Kenya (I applaud you, buddy), he asked myself and a few others to keep his baby going. Of course, I obliged. Just spreading the love. Anyways, over at my site awhile back I [...]
