What's happened? - Another Sunny Day I just happened to receive this record in the mail this morning, so it was with some prescience that i woke up with the title song in my head. Maybe it was me bringing it to existence in today's delivery through hope, desperation. It had been a while. Anyway, i now have it, and i didn't pay too much for it (and that is measured by what i think is too much to pay for a record, not [...]

In the March 2008 issue of Mojo, there was a sprawling article on the Smiths. But if you look a little closer (on page 75 to be exact), you'll find a list of bands that were predecessors, contemporaries, and influencers on Morrissey, Marr & Co. These "indie" bands, oft classified as C81/86 or as part of Sarah or Postcard records, shared some of the jingle and jangle of the Smiths, without the spotlight. While some of the bands may remain in their cult status, others I must admit, I did listen to occasionally or often: Wild Swans, Orange [...]
Pop music formed by '60s girl groups are often subjected to ancient stereotypes. Joyous harmonies, lyrics consisting of nothing more than multiply layered "doo-wop-da-doo-wop"s, and a subtle sway of the hips for sex appeal (or the most of what was allowed of it on TV at the time). While much of what was considered [...]
Genetic engineering - Orchestral Maneouvres in the Dark Maybe this is the beginnings of a new direction in personality and preference, like how almost everyone... softened (ick) after high school or punk rock and shifted all musical concentration and inclination to raves and electronic music. But this is not electronic music like that abyss of electronic music that swallowed them all whole. This is still just pop music. I shouldn't even pretend that this has anything of the conversion they went through. I'm still [...]
Over the past few weeks, while everyone was sexually gratifying themselves to the new Animal Collective (no offence, I listened to it too), I enjoyed an upcoming release from Slumberland Records. The self-titled debut from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart is out soon and has already been added to my canon of great albums from 2009 (the only entry so far besides Face Control by Handsome Furs ). Although they sound like indie pop from London, Bristol, or Glasgow, the Pains are actually a group of stateside (New York, New [...]

Another Sunny Day may be best known for Smiths-esque mope pop songs such as "I'm In Love With A Girl Who Doesn't Know I Exist" and "You Should All Be Murdered," but the band's first release is 2 minutes of fuzzed out bliss. Originally released as a flexi-disc single with Sarah Records founder Matt Haynes' "Are You Scared To Get Happy?" fanzine, the track tumbles along to a drum machine rhythm and Harvey Williams' shy vocal response to indie pop critics. Play it loud and jump around. Pop gold. Download: Another Sunny Day - Anorak [...]

Best of 2008? Well, to be honest, I haven't got a clue! 2008 has been a good year. I loved so many albums in 2008, and picking one, ten or even fifty would be impossible and definitely not fair at all. If I had made one of these lists, I'd probably waste a lot of time thinking stupid things like "is this album really better than that one, or should I rearrange them", or "was this released in 2008 or is it a 2007-album??". I don't think that's the way I want to spend my time… [...]
by stos London based Another Sunny Day gained critical acclaim for this single off their lone album London Weekend . Frontman Harvey Williams (who works at the BBC) went onto record a couple of solo albums, as well as some collaborations with The Field Mice and The Hit Parade . YOU SHOULD ALL BE MURDERED BY ANOTHER SUNNY DAY:
Ich traute ja meinen Augen nicht, als ich gestern einen Blick auf das Lineup des diesjährigen Rip It Up-Festivals im schwedischen Säffle (18./19. Juli) warf - treten da doch tatsächlich die legendäre Sarah Records-Band Another Sunny Day (jawohl, die mit «You should all be murdered» , einem der besten Songs aller Zeiten) auf! Von dieser Band war seit Anfang der 90er nichts mehr zu hören, und nun tauchen sie plötzlich wieder aus der Versenkung, unfassbar... Der Rest des Programms liest sich auch wie ein Traum: [...]
C86 was a mix cassette given out by the NME in, what else, 1986. It came to define the indie pop scene in Britain. Now, Bob Stanley of St. Etienne has compiled the best moments of that cassette and other songs into a collection called "CD86". Among the highlights are Primal Scream's "Velocity Girl" (which was the inspiration for The Stone Roses' "Made of Stone") and "Anorak City" by Another Sunny Day. Highly recommended. Listen to "Velocity Girl": [Download Here] [...]

OMG polar bears! As noted in the title of this post, today is indeed the start of spring semester. I don't have much time today, so in honor of this most wonderful of occasions, I present you polar bears and two old songs that are really sad ! Sweet! Finally, I've put together another mixtape for you. 24 tracks, - 77 minutes and 7 seconds of pure pop. As always, the mixtape will fit perfectly on an 80 minute CD-R. This time, all the songs come in the category "sweet, melodic indiepop". All shiny and jangly, and of course, lots of new artists and hopefully some new and great discoveries for you too. I've included an old favorite of mine here too: the classic and super-bittersweet "I'm in love with a girl who doesn't know I exist" originally released on the great Sarah [...]

The NME's C86 cassette, capturing Britain's mid-eighties low fi pop scene, is possibly the most famous, non-hip hop mixtape of all time. But, more people these days are likely to have heard of it, than actually have heard it, and piecing together some of the tracks that have fallen into obscurity using a file sharing service is likely to be a tricky and time consuming process. Sanctuary records has done there part to further the fey pop legacy with a new compilation called, fittingly, CD86 . It doesn't replicate the [...]

I've had a soft spot for twee for years, even when I didn't really know what it was. Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura - both have been long-time favourites, especially B&S. But a whole genre of sensitive, introspective, and beautiful guitar-pop? Yes, indeed! So I liked (no, loved) Belle & Sebastian, what next? Following the somewhat eccentric path of musical exploration (allmusic, acclaimed music, pitchfork, and a bazillion other sites), I was eventually lead to find the Twee As Fuck: The Joy of Kittenhood compilation. Having listened to the tracks ad nauseum, I started taking [...]
