As all Doklands readers know, the oud is the ancient lute-like instrument still in use from Iran to Morocco. The way that Anouar Brahem plays it is anything but traditional, however. He hails from Tunisia, and blends everything from jazz to flamenco to ragas into his playing style. Here is the quiet and melancholy Blue Jewels . It's music that slides the knife in softly, and then won't stop twisting. Meditative and heartbreaking stuff from his brilliant 2000 album Astrakhan Café . Anouar Brahem - Blue Jewels [...]

CD REVIEW Anouar Brahem: The Astounding Eyes of Rita (ECM) Something there is about Palestinan poet Mahmoud Darwish that inspires musicians. And not just to set his words to music, as was done by Reem Kelani with the song "Mawwaal" on her album Sprinting Gazelle. Just as interesting is that he inspires instrumentalists to somehow emulate the rhythm or melody or mood of his poems through strictly instrumental music. That's what Marcel Khalife did on his Taqasim, and the poet's words also [...]

Making a best of list has been considerably harder for 2009. First things first, together with Can we've dug an immense amount of vintage Brasilian music, lots of easy listening, old soul/funk/disco gems and the quality on most of these records put 2009 music to shame. Face it, you can't keep up with João Donato, Yma Sumac, Piero Umiliani, Prince Buster etc. I haven't listened to Grizzly Bear, Mumford & Sons, Mos Def, Natural Snow Buildings and lots of other stuff seen on mainstream lists. Try as I might I couldn't get into [...]
This is very much a celebratory release from the Tunisian oud master. As usual the mood is captured admirably by Manfred Eicher with a sound so pure it makes this Saharan opus seem Glacial. Klaus Gesing (Bass clarinet) is a force Majure of sound and Bjorn Meyer (Bass) and Khaled Yassinedarbouke (Bendir)serve their master well. The eight pieces in this collection are largely slow in pace,

So I'm just going to pretend that my pathological inability to meet girlpants deadlines has a certain charm to it, that I'm the blogging equivalent of fashionably late. I'm pretty sure Ben wants to fire me but that corporate fat-cat is gonna have to go through the union first. Haha yea take that you corporate fat-cat! Um, here are my top ten records of 06. Nothing too shocking, but I'm definitely of the belief that it's always a good year for music and this one was no exception. I feel like fucking Alfred Russel Wallace here, but I [...]

Hey girlpantsketeers, long time no talk. There's been some corporate restructuring going on (we now belong to a secret international cabal, so sweet), and one unfortunate side effect is that the staff has been flung to the far corners of the earth. I think Niina is in Canada, composing the new Finnish national epic. Joel, imbued with the revolutionary spirit of our times, has gone underground, and Ben has become a hard-drinking race car driver. I myself haven't been doing much, mostly riding the bus and scowling at people. I guess what I'm trying to say is that we've all [...]
