Image: Seasprayblue Silent Hotels - The Answering Machine Turns out the new indie rock anthems are pretty much built on the old specs. "Silent Hotels," a superior example of the contemporary model, offers the indignant plaints and brittle rattle of Chapel Hill circa 1994 (not to mention Minneapolis, 1983). When Martin Colclough sings, It just hit me, in this city/ I talk to myself and drink til I'm sick , he's reaching [...]

Another year comes to a close and unless you were living under a rock, 2007 was a great one for music. Maybe the tunes are actually better lately or maybe they're just easier to get at (I sometimes wonder how many great bands were lost during the pre-Internet era). There are so many bands to be excited about right now, much of which is coming out of the UK at the moment courtesy of forebearers like The Arctic Monkeys and The Cribs and now spilling into a new generation of punk/C86 mashers like [...]

Otra de las bandas ausentes de la lista final de las Top 100 '07 son los de The Answering Machine ... de Manchester son Martin que canta y toca la guitarra, Patrick que toca la otra guitarra, Gemma en el bajo y Ben en la batería... La Máquina Contestadora tienen marcadas influencias de The Strokes , The Radio Dept. , Shout Out Louds , The Brilliant Corners y de The Streets ... Al final suenan a Arte Pop, o Artpop [...]

Yeah, another one of those weeks. But, it's out of Minnesota (cool place) and back to Austin tonight, likely preceeded by shameless begging at the ticket counter for an exit-row window seat to crash and burn against. But that will likewise be preceeded by this, yet another gift to you, my friends. Here are the definite faves of this sleepless week. Enjoy. The Answering Machine - " Silent Hotels ". This is one of those tunes that lives for the chorus, laying in wait until [...]

Question, how many bands these days do you see naming obscure band from 80's as influences? Well, I don't see too many, but then again I don't get out much. The Answering Machine hailing from Manchester name a few likely candidates like the Strokes , Shout Out Louds and Radio Dept , but throw a curve ball when they site the Brilliant Corners . The Brilliant Corners were from Bristol and very overlooked band from the late 80's. They had a bit of a happy music, sad lyrics thing going on, that had elements of [...]
Is this the gadget that will finally make me give up my vinyl? I'm not sure, but it certainly looks a lot of fun. And a lot of sexy. It's a 120Gb MP3 player, that also lets you mix tracks together. A pocket DJ system if you will. I would question whether it's really a good idea to make it even easier for people to become DJs, as sometimes it seems these days that a fast internet connection
It's a fairly late start to the week since my work and away from computer life has been complete insanity but now the "slow motion-radio-type-thingy" here moves forward with another really good new band from the UK. Sometimes I read before listening to the music, while other times, when the artists are young, it makes more sense to listen before reading. After all, what potential new

Oot and aboot, I've gathered this loot. Thanks to Hot Stof , For the Eardrum , and Gorilla vs. Bear for the cranial elevations. Valley Below - Souvenir mp3 (pic) The Answering Machine - The Hold Up mp3 The Royalties - Lady O' the Silver Wheel mp3 Elk City [...]

I'm not quite sure why The Young Knives played the Night & Day last Thursday in what seems like a step backwards after selling out the Academy 3 last October and being booked to play the Academy 2 next month. I'm not complaining though; this could be our last chance to catch the band in such a small venue for some years. Opening was Peg Simone , who I'd never heard before and who impressed JustHipper much more than she impressed me, probably due to a lack of pretense and kookiness. She played solo, with a [...]

In case you weren't listening last night, RekLES and I filled in for DJ Elhaam at East Village Radio ... and it was good times. You can get the wonderful mp3 of almost all of the show below (the last 2 songs were cut off in the recording for the next show). Sorry about the distortion in the first half of the set, but RekLES is apparently deaf (JK, love). I also don't like to talk on mics, so he did all the talking. MP3: Guilty Pleasure - 9.18.06 [...]
