photo by Andy Bokanev ( view set ) Brooklyn-based band Antibalas , which is Spanish for "bulletproof", released their fifth studio album last August. This release really launched them on a sizable worldwide tour and lucky for us they happened to make a stop in Seattle. Founded in the late 90s, Antibalas has never strayed from their signature style despite large commercial success. With a band consisting of twelve members, Antibalas is able to deliver a deeply layered and sophisticated music experience without overwhelming your eardrums. Their killer use of brass instruments and conga drums [...]

It's nice to get out of your comfort zone and delve into new musical territories every once in a while. Lately I've been been experimenting with everything from abstract hip-hop to smooth jazz. You Wish is a heavily sampled chill out track by Britain's Nightmares on Wax. Go Je Je on the other hand is an all-over-the-place rhythm driven funky afrobeat by the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. Nightmares on Wax - You Wish (Right Click [...]
Free mp3 music downloads often mean trouble, but today it really does mean free legal songs on Earvolution.com, courtesy of artists giving away some free mp3 downloads. And, today is a three-fer deal from the Phenomenal Handclap Band and Friendly Fire Recordings. The first offering for free and legal downloading is "The Journey To Serra Da Estrella (Fujiya & Miyagi Remix)", which is a new spin on
By: David Schultz Pontificating over the difficulties any artist encounters in following up a well-received debut album can be a pretentious endeavor. Given that, we’ll leave a dissertation on that subject to a blogger who thinks they’re offering fresh new insight on a much-covered topic. Sadly though, all the clichés about sophomore efforts may be embodied by Sugar, Dead Confederate’s

I've touted Antibalas ' on these pages before while talking about the Broadway musical Fela! (most recently in writing about the soundtrack here ). Well before they were recruited to be the backing band for the musical, they had to prove their chops to the world, and one of their efforts that certainly walks the walk is Who Is This America?, and album that was released in 2004 on Ropeadope Records . Well, today Ropeadope is re-releasing the album, with an additional unreleased track on the CD version. If you've not [...]

Back in the day, before I started music blogging and before I even started reading blogs, a little afrobeat band from Brooklyn was making a name for itself with an Anti-Bush record – Who Is This America?. This was 2004 – G.W.’s reelection year. The record may have only been seven songs long, but it packed a punch – both politically and musically. Now in 2010, Ropeadope is reissuing the album. And that little afrobeat band is HUGE. The horn section plays with anybody who is anybody (TV On The Radio, Medeski, Martin & Wood and Angelique Kidjo); plus [...]
I became aware of Antibalas around the time that I was working on a review of the very cool Scion Daptone Records Remixed compilation where I mentioned that Ticklah who is credited with the remix of "How Long Do I Have to Wait" by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings , is David Axelrod who, among other things, has been a member of the Brooklyn, NY Afrobeat and funk ensemble since 1999. Antibalas was formed in 1998 and modeled after Fela [...]

The Budos Band II, 2007. Stuart Bogie is one of the busiest people in the music business today. He’s a producer/composer, and studied music at the Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan. Bogie has either recorded or performed with TV On The Radio, Gomez, Burning Spear, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sway Machinery, Wu-Tang Clan and The Roots to name a few. He's also a member of Volney Litmus , Anitbalas and Superhuman Happiness , but his main gig is with Afrobeat super-group Antibalas . While playing with each of these groups [...]

Finally i will see my friend Sean Rogg´s art exhibition. Just a few hours left. I have no idea what´s happening in Romania with Jonny Puma and Arnie Becker. Maybe they have been bitten by female vampires by now... I think we all know by now that we all come originally from Africa, and that includes even the music. Listen to these african uptempo songs and you will understand where the origin of all modern dancemusic comes from. Alemayehu Eshete - Addis Ababa Bete [...]

I've been listening non-stop to The Menahan Street Band's ' Make The Road By Walking ' and Fort Knox Five's ' Radio Free DC ' albums for the past couple of days. As I mentioned yesterday, there are some incredible bands in this genre, such as Galactic, The New Mastersounds, The Poets Of Rhythm, Antibalas, Karl Denson, Medeski, Martin & Wood and The Budos Band. Even though the majority of these guys have been playing music for well over a decade, I still consider them new Funk. James Brown & The [...]

"We are having us a liberal good time in the Washington Mutual Memorial Tent" Stuart Bogie (center in blue shirt) Fela Kuti was smiling down on Austin today. While Friday's Austin City Limits Music Festival lineup boasted the likes of Gogol Bordello, Hot Chip, N.E.R.D. and Vampire Weekend, Brooklyn's Antibalas high-energy set stole day one. Tenor Sax player Stuart Bogie was the ringleader encouraging the audience to participate with the eleven member tribal-funk-soul group. Bogie and the horn section are featured on the new TV On The Radio album [...]
Considering the fact that I didn't go to last weekend's Treasure Island Music Festival in San Fracisco, and the pope won't be contributing as often as we'd all like him to, I can't do much in the way of a review. However, I did speak with him about it and he really only had one [...]

Fela Kuti Afrobeat Afrobeat is a combination of American jazz, funk and Nigerian beat. It was created by Africa’s most outspoken artist, the late Fela Ransome Anikulapo of Nigeria in the early 70s at the time British rock and American soul music was dominating most of Africa’s music scene. Fela introduced his brand of style to stop the British musical invasion. The closest I've come to experiencing Fela's music was through his youngest son Seun Kuti at The El Rey [...]
