Much like the previous mix ( Album Enders From The Ladies Of '07 ), this is a mix of songs that are the last cut on albums released in 2007 by men or bands of men. Of course, you could probably ascertain that from the title. Just call me The Duke of Redundancy. These are mellow songs, perfect for ending your day with. Get it? Album enders for ending your day (falling asleep). 1. Explosions In The Sky ~ So Long, Lonesome 2. Magnet ~ Lucid [...]

Dawn Landes ~ Young Folks (BJ and J cover) Bishop Allen ~ Click, Click, Click, Click (catchy indie) Joan As Police Woman ~ The Ride (moody indie) Antibalas ~ Beaten Metal (Afro-beat at its finest) Clare & The Reasons ~ Pluto (orchestral-pop at it finest) Marco Mahler [...]

antibalas - beaten metal (mp3) wow... what can you say about antibalas ? if you don't know of them, you need to. one of the most energetic and politically charged live acts around today, the brooklyn based afro-funk orchestra made their name through their legendary live shows and outspoken views against the american government. they also made their name by coming the closest to re-creating fela kuti's legendary sound of soul and funk inspired afrobeat. however, they add to this the rich jazz heritage of new york and come out [...]

What a long, long day. Tonight I am in Tucson, and tomorrow I'll be in LA. There weren't many stops to make today, as I wanted to drive as far as I could without stopping. I didn't get any free breakfast this morning from the hotel, so I was forced to spend $2.89 for a Sonic breakfast burrito combo meal. It was the first time I ever had Sonic, and will probably be the last time. Everything was going good until I got to the last few bites of the burrito, and it began leaking what was either melted butter [...]

I'll be the first to admit that my Afrobeat collection doesn't run very deep, aside from Antibalas' Who Is This America? , I have two other albums by the father of the genre, Fela Kuti . Kuti founded the genre and coined the term Afrobeat in Nigeria in the 1960s, which fuses jazz with Yoruba music , highlife , and funk. The horn driven resulting sound is energetic, eclectic, and very danceable. Since it's inception, politics have been essential to the genre, from Kuti's songs about political injustice in the beginning [...]
Are your brackets busted? This was the first year since I was a wee little one that I neglected to fill out an NCAA tournament bracket in advance. March Madness is only marginally interesting when there are no dramatic storylines or Cinderella teams. Two one-seeds and two two-seeds in the Final Four is about as captivating as the Patriots making the Super Bowl. With all this (one paragraph of) sports talk, I've probably lost my entire Sunday evening audience of sexually ambiguous, mildly anorexic, ironic-shirt-wearing, antisocial music snobs. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With [...]

This is a pretty easy segue from my last post about Tony Allen. I was reading the latest Rolling Stone yesterday, and in Austin Scaggs' Smoking Section , he gave a heads up to the new album by Antibalas (which just came out March 6th). Scaggs said they "churn out the best Afrobeat since Fela Kuti left the building". So naturally, off I went to eMusic to download the album, and glad I did at that. Brooklyn-based Antibalas is most certainly hugely influenced by Fela. I would say it's impossible to [...]

Shit. I forgot to post the new Antibalas , like, a long time ago. Better late than never. Download: "ICE" (mp3) Myspace page is here . Anti page is here . Emusic page is here .
While American pop culture is often trashed as being too focused on the foibles of Britney Spears, Anna Nicole Smith and Paris Hilton seems our friends across the pond have their own trailer park-ish entertainment. Seems like every other day a spat arises between a couple of Brit artists. Even Lilly Allen is getting in on the act with a mini-feud with Lady Sovereign who had claimed Allen only got a break because he father is a well known British comedian. Allen has responded saying her dad has offered to adopt the pint sized rapper to help her [...]

A few years ago I had the pleasure of seeing Antibalas up in Toronto at the Exclaim birthday party (an amazing bill with the Hidden Cameras) Anyways I've enjoyed the bands albums almost as much as their live show (which does mean a lot since they are killer live) They have a new album coming out on Anti on March 6, called Security. There's a preview track up on the Anti website which you can check out here. Antibalas-"I.C.E."
