I've included some of my favorite "international" songs, as well as a few local ones to boot... Somewhat disparate in their sound, style and even execution, I think they're all great. Tony Banks "By You" Fantastic Something "If She Doesn't Smile [...]

[photo by nyctaper] Last Tuesday at Bell House was not just the first "wheel spin" Yo La Tengo show ever in NYC , it was also the CD release show from YLT friends and collaborators Antietam . In fact, Antietam was the headlining band at Yo La Tengo's first-ever show at Maxwell's in 1984. The latest Antietam release Tenth Life is their eighth studio album and first since 2008's Opus Mixtum . At the Bell House, Antietam performed the entire album Tenth Life from start to finish, [...]

photos by Winnie Cheung YLT @ the Bell House - 5/10/11 "For their current U.S. tour , the band has embraced the indie-rock equivalent of "Wheel of Fortune," a large wheel divided into several categories, including songs beginning with the letter S or an entire instrumental film score written by the band. A spin by a guest lands on an imperative that sets the performance for the first set. That wheel [was] with them Tuesday when [...]

After a half-decade in semi-hibernation, alt. rock veteran Rick Rizzo returns to deliver two strong albums; one with Antietam's Tara Key and another at the helm of his Eleventh Dream Day mothership.

Every year instead of a one off "best of" post I look back on the year that was with a series of reposts. These may not be on anyone elses best records of the year list, but to me they are some of the most important, most overlooked, or just plain "most" records of the year. Expect 10-15 of these type of posts over the next three weeks. This post on the band Antietam was originally published in early January of 2008. --- Antietam is [...]

"Actually, you must be listening down in Alabama. This line of mockery is not tracking." -- Tom, ending a riff about the Internet being unavailabe in the southern state "Oh, it sounds great. It's like I'm gettin' crushed by the waves down at Barnegat." -- Philly Boy Roy, riding the reverb during his performance of "And We Danced" "There will be slathering, why? Oh yeah, there will be squishing, too, yeah, and into my Pacer." -- Philly Boy Roy, detailing his plans for removing Zachary Brimstead from his home [...]
This post is a special service to all us old folks (over 30): 1.) Tomorow night, 4/25, at Southpaw in Brooklyn: it's like 1988 in 2008, as the Homestead sound makes a return in the form of a crazy triple-bill featuring Big Dipper , Ohio's Great Plains , and Antietam (NYC'ers may recognize Antietam's Josh Madell as the owner of Other Music ). I believe this tour is to support the new Big Dipper 3-CD collection out on Merge , but all of these bands are [...]
Please know, dear visitor, if we had the words to say how much we're enjoying the following, we'd spend them. Austinites Murdocks - Playhouse Party mp3 - I've seen at least two different names for this song. I'll go with the one Vitriol's Ian Anderson graciously sent me today. The new EP, Roar, emits next week. The Ugly Beats - The Light Comes On mp3 - I've been enjoying this group for awhile and

As I was looking the new releases for this week, a thought happened to cross my mind: Are people more inclined to actually buying music if there isn't an overabundance of albums to choose from week after week? Case in point, the release of British Sea Power's Do You Like Rock Music? being the lone notable album out this week. It certainly works that way with movies, so it would be interesting to know if that rings true with music. Regarding BSP's album, it's definitely a solid effort. This coming from [...]
Care to relive those days when there was there was something seemingly dangerous about Michael Jackson's video for Thriller , in which the countless now-Disney-esque zombies stumbled at you through dark alleys, and when Jacko himself could (semi)convincingly act the bad boy boyfriend before he transformed into something that crawled offstage of Cats ? No? Well, then maybe the 25 th anniversary edition of Thriller , on shelves this week, isn't for you. But maybe something else is on Largehearted Boy's list of new releases . You may not be as familiar with many of [...]

Antietam is one of these strange lost bands from the 80's that deserve a reunion, but really, whoever thought they'd get one. Others in this category include Big Dipper, The Embarrassment, Fetchin' Bones, Buffalo Tom and Swimming Pool Q's. The band that released it's early work on Cosloy's Homestead Records, now sees it's long awaited double disc of new material put out on the iconoclastic Chicago label Carrot Top . (Read more about it's early releases here at Vinyl Mine). At the time that Antietam was kicking around the Atlantic coast they [...]
